"An intoxicating and unforgettable story that kept me glued to the page."

Kami Garcia, #1 New York Times bestselling author, on Walk the Edge

LONG WAY HME - RDL teaser 2

The instructions of the English homework I didn’t do hangs out from the top of my folder: Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both.
            Story of my life.
According to my football coach, I chose wrongly on the two crap paths I had to face last week. I just ran into Coach on the way to English, and he ripped into me for my sorry decision-making skills when it came to me choosing to stand up for the Reign of Terror Motorcycle Club instead of a member of my football team.
I didn’t just get my ass chewed out, his tirade made me late for English with no tardy note. Which is great since my English teacher hates late students like I hate riding  my motorcycle in forty degree weather while it rains.
I round the corner, then peek through the small window on the door of my class. Ms. Whitlock stands in front of her desk in her patented white button-down shirt, gray pencil skirt, and dark-rimmed glasses. From the back row, my best friend Razor meets my eyes and shakes his head. Damn. That means she’s in one of her moods where she’s refusing to let anyone in.
I’m not a tail-tucked-between-my-legs type of guy, but this lady is one of the few who can reduce me to begging. If she doesn’t let me in, then she’ll mark me as absent, the front office will think I skipped, and that means I won’t be able to play at tonight’s football game.
The window rattles when I knock. The entire class turns their heads in my direction, but Ms. Whitlock doesn’t. The muscles in my neck tighten. She is one of the hardest core people I know and my grandfather is the president of a motorcycle club. That says something.
She starts for the white board and I knock on the door again. This time, Ms. Whitlock does look my way and she grants me the type of glare reserved for people who kick puppies. I got it. I’m late. I’m the scum of humanity, so let my ass in so I can play football.
There’s this guy in my club, Pigpen. He’s about the same age as Ms. Whitlock, late twenties, and he’s a walking hard-on for this woman even though she would never give him the time of day. He practically runs into walls when she’s around because he’s too focused on checking her out. I don’t see gorgeous—all I see is seriously pissed off and the person standing between me and playing.
Ms. Whitlock points at the clock over her desk. She’s telling me I can wait. If I’m lucky, she’ll open the door after the quiz that I’ll receive a zero on. If I’m not so lucky, she won’t open the door at all.
Two pathetic paths and I could only travel one. Nowhere in that stupid poem did it mention there was good and bad to both paths and that sometimes it’s best not to choose, but to set up camp at the fork and do nothing at all.
I slam my hand into the nearest locker, almost relishing the sting.
            “Feel better?”
A glance across the hallway and I freeze. Doesn’t matter how many times I see her in a day, she still manages to take my breath away.

Review: Under Rose-Tainted Skies by Louise Gornall

Under Rose-Tainted Skies by Louise Gornall

Notes: Review copy received via Amazon Vine.
Young Adult, Mental Illness, Romance, Social Issues
Audio/Digital/Print (336 pages, CLARION)
Norah has agoraphobia and OCD. When groceries are left on the porch, she can’t step out to get them. Struggling to snag the bags with a stick, she meets Luke. He’s sweet and funny, and he just caught her fishing for groceries. Because of course he did.
Norah can’t leave the house, but can she let someone in? As their friendship grows deeper, Norah realizes Luke deserves a normal girl. One who can lie on the front lawn and look up at the stars. One who isn’t so screwed up.
Readers themselves will fall in love with Norah in this poignant, humorous, and deeply engaging portrait of a teen struggling to find the strength to face her demons.

The stigma stops here. (5 stars)

When you suffer from a mental illness the stigma can be nearly as crushing as your condition. UNDER ROSE-TAINTED SKIES is one of the first YA novels I've read that I felt actively voiced this. Norah's agoraphobia and OCD have built a life that she and her mother manage in their own way. It's not perfect but for the most part they make it work. Some readers may find the lengths they go a bit over-the-top but I can speak from experience that they're actually realistic.

As I read URTS I found myself getting frustrated with Norah a lot. At first I thought it was that I didn't like her but as the story progressed I realized that it wasn't that I didn't like her, it was that I was unwittingly seeing my own struggles with mental health in her. The things I thought I didn't like about her were things I felt frustrated with my self over. For readers who live with mental illnesses this might be a struggle. But what ultimately made it a 5-star read for me was feeling like Norah was able to grow stronger in her fight both against her disorders and the stigma of living with them.

Review: Nightmares: A New Decade of Modern Horror (anthology)

Nightmares: A New Decade of Modern Horror

Notes: Review copy received via NetGalley.
Anthology, Short Stories, Horror, Occult
Digital/Print (432 pages, TACHYON PUBLICATIONS)
Unlucky thieves invade a house where Home Alone seems like a playground romp. An antique bookseller and a mob enforcer join forces to retrieve the Atlas of Hell. Postapocalyptic survivors cannot decide which is worse: demon women haunting the skies or maddened extremists patrolling the earth.
In this chilling twenty-first-century companion to the cult classic Darkness: Two Decades of Modern Horror, Ellen Datlow again proves herself the most masterful editor of the genre. She has mined the breadth and depth of ten years of terror, collecting superlative works of established masters and scene-stealing newcomers alike.

Something for every horror reader. (3 stars)

Anthologies are notorious for earning 3-star ratings with few exceptions and NIGHTMARES: A NEW DECADE OF MODERN HORROR is no different.

I'm admittedly only a casual horror reader, partaking once in a blue moon to break free from genre over-saturation. When I do step into the horror shelves I tend to enjoy tales with supernatural and paranormal elements, tales of mental illness both real and imagined, and the kind of chillers that keep you up at night because they make your mind fill in the blanks so much you're creeping yourself out. There were enough of those here to sate my desires and for that I was able to give it the 3-star rating. Unfortunately, there were a few stories peppered in that involved pedophilia and incest, elements that I find repugnant on a visceral level. I don't mind some gore or even some well plotted violence but I simply cannot read about sexual violence against children without becoming physically ill. If the same bothers you please proceed with caution.

Overall, some were quite enjoyable, a few were awful, and several were forgettable. For me the standout was "Closet Dreams", a kidnapping tale that left me breathless. I also found "Was She Wicked? Was She Good?" exceptionally creepy.

Weekend Reading [1/20-1/22] :: My Crazy Magical TBR

Me trying to hold on to my sanity.

Soooo 2017 is already shaping up to be worse than 2016.

At least for me it is. I am so sick of negative things happening in my life. If it weren't for books I think I'd snap.

This week I'm working my way through Under Rose-Tainted Skies by Louise Gornall. There's something about fiction featuring characters struggling with mental illness that makes me feel just a little more capable. Like if these fictional people can make it through maybe I can too. If you have a favorite do let me know, I'm always looking for more to add to my wishlist.

Last weekend I decided to finally give The Magicians a try. I'd been really wanting to watch it but with no cable I was kinda SOL until it hit Netflix then everything else was a priority. Now I can't believe no one is talking about it! That show is fantastic. I finished the first season last night, forgetting that the second isn't out yet. Oops. So I finally started The Magicians on audio. It'll probably be a big part of my reading this weekend.

What read are you escaping into this weekend?

Leave a comment and tell me! -- Rhi

Review: The Valiant by Lesley Livingston

The Valiant by Lesley Livingston

Notes: ARC received via Amazon Vine.
Young Adult, Historical, Ancient Civ, Romance
Digital/Print/Audio (384 pages, RAZORBILL)
Princess. Captive. Gladiator. Always a Warrior.
Fallon is the daughter of a proud Celtic king and the younger sister of the legendary fighter Sorcha. When Fallon was just a child, Sorcha was killed by the armies of Julius Caesar.
On the eve of her seventeenth birthday, Fallon is excited to follow in her sister's footsteps and earn her place in her father's war band. She never gets the chance.
Fallon is captured and sold to an elite training school for female gladiators—owned by none other than Julius Caesar himself. In a cruel twist of fate, the man who destroyed Fallon’s family might be her only hope of survival.
Now, Fallon must overcome vicious rivalries, deadly fights in and out of the arena, and perhaps the most dangerous threat of all: her irresistible feelings for Cai, a young Roman soldier and her sworn enemy.
A richly imagined fantasy for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Cinda Williams Chima, The Valiant recounts Fallon’s gripping journey from fierce Celtic princess to legendary gladiator and darling of the Roman empire.

An ancient civ YA worth reading! (4 stars)

I don't often reach for historical YA but when I do it's usually something in the ancient civ. There's just something interesting about times when people believed in large pantheons and so much of the world was still undiscovered. Back when wars were fought hand to hand and there were interesting codes of honor. THE VALIANT delivers very well on these aspects so buckle up!

While I never quite stopped thinking of Fallon as a bit of a fool who thought way too highly of herself and her own skills, the overall story was very good. With interesting twists and turns, nary a slow spot, fights galore, and lots of romantic tension I had a difficult time putting this one down. Aside from not tolerating Fallon's personality well the only complaint I really have is that the story felt unfinished, as if it were written with loose threads in hopes of a sequel but a little too wrapped up to feel quite like one was needed.

Review: Maresi by Maria Turtschaninoff

Maresi (The Red Abbey Chronicles) by Maria Turtschaninoff

Notes: ARC received via NetGalley.
Young Adult, Fantasy, Feminism
Digital/Print/Audio (256 pages, ABRAMS)
Only women and girls are allowed in the Red Abbey, a haven from abuse and oppression. Maresi, a thirteen-year-old novice there, arrived in the hunger winter and now lives a happy life in the Abbey, protected by the Mother and reveling in the vast library in the House of Knowledge, her favorite place. Into this idyllic existence comes Jai, a girl with a dark past. She has escaped her home after witnessing the killing of her beloved sister. Soon the dangers of the outside world follow Jai into the sacred space of the Abbey, and Maresi can no longer hide in books and words but must become one who acts. Author Site: website

READ this book! (5 stars)

I read an excerpt from MARESI many months before it came out and from that tiny taste alone if became one of my most coveted 2017 releases. Sometimes I shoot myself in the foot that way and wind up being disappointed when a book doesn't live up to my expectations. MARESI went well beyond my expectations!

While Turtschaninoff can get a bit Tolkien-ish in providing more detailed descriptions than one needs I didn't feel like it bogged the story down. The world building is subtle and tense, presenting just enough information of the world beyond the Red Abbey to frighten. As a woman, as a mother, as a feminist, I found myself terrified and angry only to realize just how unfictional many of the elements of the story were.

This book is absolutely everything. I can't even express how phenomenal it is. I wish I could send a copy back in time to my teen self so that I can have read this when I needed it most. Calling this a must-read feels like an understatement and I desperately await the next two translations of the Red Abbey Chronicles.

Review: Lost Girls by Merrie Destefano

Lost Girls by Merrie Destefano

Notes: ARC received via NetGalley.
Young Adult, Thriller, Romance
Digital/Print (360 pages, ENTANGLED TEEN)
Yesterday, Rachel went to sleep listening to Taylor Swift, curled up in her grammy’s quilt, worrying about geometry. Today, she woke up in a ditch, bloodied, bruised, and missing a year of her life.
She doesn’t recognize the person she’s become: She’s popular. She wears nothing but black.
Black to cover the blood.
And she can fight.
Tell no one.
She’s not the only girl to go missing within the last year…but she’s the only girl to come back. She desperately wants to unravel what happened to her, to try and recover the rest of the Lost Girls.
But the more she discovers, the more her memories return. And as much as her new life scares her, it calls to her. Seductively. The good girl gone bad: sex, drugs, and raves, and something darker…something she still craves. The rush of the fight, the thrill of the win―something she can’t resist, that might still get her killed…
Author Site: website

Get ready for an all-nighter! (4 stars)

I don't read a lot of YA thrillers but there was something really compelling about LOST GIRLS. While it wound up going in a different direction than I thought it would—which is why I couldn't rate it an "I loved it"—it was very much a can't-put-down book.

One of my biggest frustrations as a reader is that I very rarely get tricked or surprised by an author. Sure, I take a little pride in being great at figuring the twists out beforehand, but I really love it when an author can stump me. Destefano managed to do so so masterfully I had to put the book down and give an exasperated groan.

Without giving too much away, I feel like this book blended marvelous elements of Fight Club, Taken, Black Swan, and Pretty Little Liars into a cryptic and violent page turner. If you need an engrossing, mature YA read that will pull no punches and leave you thinking long after it's over I very much recommend LOST GIRLS.

A new favorite book and author! (5 stars)

As a reader who is still trying to find what she enjoys in the LGBTQIA+ romance offerings I've been managing to find some fantastic reads by following my gut instincts. After the exhaustion that was 2016 I found myself sitting down at the end of Christmas day with one of the holiday themed romances I hadn't managed to fit in reading before the holiday, WRAPPED TOGETHER. And I devoured it in one sitting!

Hollis and Sawyer could not be much more different which makes for a delicious rivalry that isn't quite enemies-to-lovers. They have an interesting history and with their siblings married it makes for a complicated attraction. I absolutely adored them both as individuals, fangirling away at their sexy, sweet journey to true love.

WRAPPED TOGETHER not only ranks up there as one of the best holiday season romances I've read but also as one of my romance favorites too. If you read romances of all flavors because you simply love love I think you will adore this one too. I literally finished this book and came straight to Amazon to start adding the rest of the series to my wishlist. I'm adding Albert to my authors to watch list and I can't wait to catch up on all of the Portland Heat novels.

Review: Hellbeasts by Katya Harris

Hellbeasts by Katya Harris

Notes: Review copy received via NetGalley.
Shifters, Romance, LGBTQIA
Digital (61 pages, LESS THAN THREE PRESS)
When restlessness drives Shadow out of his MC's clubhouse and into the night, the last thing he expected was to find a half-dead werewolf. Shadow has never been known for his altruism, but he takes the wounded man back to his motorcycle club, the Hellbeasts.
Rand doesn't know who attacked him, but suspects at least one person from his own pack is involved. But even that might not be as bad as waking up in the midst of a group of misfit weres who don't seem to like him. Especially Shadow, the man charged with taking care of Rand, as compelling to Rand as he is frightening.
But before he and Shadow can work out what exactly they are and want to be to each other, Rand's attackers show up to finish the job.

Great cover! Really bad book. (1 stars)

I had hoped since this had shifters, bikers, and a gay romance it'd wind up being an unexpected and enjoyable find. Sadly, it was really, exceptionally awful. There is no character development. The plot fumbles around with goals but no real direction much like teenagers in the backseat of a car. The worldbuilding lacks anything to explain why the characters are thrust together as they are.

If you just want a bunch of gay sex with some Dom/sub elements you might like it as a titillating short read. If you're hoping for romance I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

Blog Tour: DIFFRACTION by Jess Anastasi [Excerpt + Giveaway]

by Jess Anastasi Atrophy #3
Publication Date: January 2, 2017
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Select Otherworld, Sci-Fi, Romance

Synopsis: After his unusual reaction to a weapon, Commando Varean Donnelly is accused of being a shape-shifting alien and imprisoned onboard the Imojenna. Sure, he has abilities he keeps hidden from everyone—including the gorgeous doc examining him—because the government makes sure people as different as him disappear. For good.Imojenna doctor Kira Sasaki knows there’s something different about the handsome commando the captain’s thrown in their brig. She doesn’t think he’s Reidar, although he might have been a victim of their cruel experiments. But when Kira learns the stubborn commando’s racial make-up, she finds herself torn between defending him to Captain Rian Sherron and his crew or urging Varean to escape while he still can.

He sent her a short frown. “I thought Sherron was some big war hero. Why are the authorities after him?”

Kira threaded her fingers through her hair, pulling some pins free. “A few months ago, Rian got Tannin to hack into the data streams of Kasson Three, a supposedly abandoned station that should have been sucked into a nearby black hole years ago. Rian suspected it was some kind of Reidar base. Baden Niels, a multiversal corporation CEO, who’s actually an alien himself, ordered a warrant issued for our arrest. He claimed his company had turned the station into a research outpost. We’re now wanted intergalactic terrorists.”

While the charge was obviously quite serious, and he was a little shocked to find he’d been nabbed by a band of wanted criminals, the idea of Kira being an intergalactic terrorist was pretty damn amusing. The more he thought about it, the harder it was to stop the grin yanking at his lips.

Kira glanced over at him, confusion crossing her features. “What’s so funny?”

“You. Being some badass, hardened criminal on the run from the authorities.”

She crossed her arms, trying for a stern expression but totally failing, her gorgeous eyes giving away her amusement.

“Hey, Mr. Big, Bad, Tough Commando, I took you down, didn’t I? I’m totally rocking the fugitive lifestyle.”

“Then I guess I don’t need to feel so bad about things if I got decked by one of the IPC’s most wanted. When I account this story later on, I’m going to tell people you were a butch, six-foot-tall, backworlds hack-medic who dosed me with an untested cocktail of synthetic drugs.”

She gave a short laugh and patted his arm. “Whatever saves your fragile ego, soldier boy.”

“Thanks,” he muttered, a little too charmed by the spark in her gaze and the way the unguarded smile made her that much more gorgeous. “How many hours until someone else takes over watch?”

She checked the time then slipped her comm away.

“About two hours, maybe three if I’m feeling generous. Tannin said he’d take the next shift.”

“If you’re tired, let me take the next two hours. I promise not to fly us to the nearest IPC outpost, as tempting as it might be.”

A half grin kicked up one side of her lips. “If I was tired, I’d let you take over the helm, but I’m really not. Well, not sleepy, anyway. Truthfully, I am feeling kind of drained. I had this really difficult patient in the last week who seemed determined to get himself killed. You know I had to save his life two and a half times.”

“Two and a half?”

She gave a decisive nod. “Yeah, I’m calling it two and a half. Don’t tell anyone, but I nearly killed him myself with a sedative.”

“Sounds like the bastard deserved it.”

“Maybe.” She gave a quick shrug. “That’s still up for consideration.”

The next smile that crossed her face had just a hint of mischief to it. He’d been wrong—her earlier, unguarded smile he’d thought was beautiful had nothing on this one, and it hit him right in the middle of his chest and rippled outward.

He has the trucking pass she needs, and she has to drag him out of a brawl with the very people she's trying to hide from in order to get it. She may have rescued him, but Raina's not foolish enough to see Wizard as anything close to helpless. He's hard and honed and full of secrets—secrets that may destroy them both. As they race across the Waste, trying to outrun rival truckers, ice pirates, and the powerful man bent on their destruction, Raina's forced to admit that trouble's found her. And this time, there's nowhere left to run.

Her face was stunning. Wide smile. White teeth and a good deal of them. Big eyes. Elegant nose. Soft cheekbones. All of this she highlighted with the expert use of makeup from what was clearly a gift of superior genes into something that shone like a Hollywood starlet.
A starlet of a stripper who looked a good deal like Dolly Parton, who also likely got home the night before, earliest, three in the morning, and was right then, only hours later, back on the stage helping another girl by teaching her some moves.
