Blog Tour: Through the Veil by Colleen Halverson [Excerpt + Giveaway]

Where the fairy tale ends, destiny begins.

Elizabeth Tanner is no Tinkerbell, and her life is no fairy tale. Broke and drowning in student loans, the one thing she wants more than anything is a scholarship from the Trinity Foundation. But after the ancient Irish text she's studying turns out to be more than just a book, she becomes their prisoner instead. And when Trinity reveals Elizabeth is half-Fae, she finds herself at the center of a plot to save the magical races of Ireland from a brutal civil war.

As Commander of Trinity's elite warriors, Finn O'Connell isn't used to having his authority challenged. He doesn't know whether to punish or protect the infuriating young woman in his custody. When he discovers the Dark Fae want to use Elizabeth's abilities to control the source of all power in the universe, he'll risk everything to help her.

At the mercy of Trinity and enslaved to the Dark Fae, Elizabeth finds herself alone on the wrong side of an Irish myth thousands of years in the making. Refusing to be a pawn in their game, Elizabeth has to fight her way back to the man she loves, but to do so, she must wage her own war against the magic that binds her.

EXCERPT:

Finn looked up at me. “Are you jealous?”

Heat rose in my face, and I placed my elbow on the table, allowing a curtain of my hair to fall between us to block Finn’s view.

“Don’t flatter yourself, Finn.”

“You are jealous!” He chuckled a little to himself.

“Shut up.”

Review: Firstlife by Gena Showalter

Firstlife (Everlife #1) by Gena Showalter
Notes: ARC received via Amazon Vine.
Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal
Ebook/Print/Audio (480 pages, HARLEQUIN TEEN)
Tenley "Ten" Lockwood is an average seventeen-year-old girl…who has spent the past thirteen months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. The reason? Not her obsession with numbers, but her refusal to let her parents choose where she'll live—after she dies.
There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death.
In the Everlife, two realms are in power: Troika and Myriad, longtime enemies and deadly rivals. Both will do anything to recruit Ten, including sending their top Laborers to lure her to their side. Soon, Ten finds herself on the run, caught in a wild tug-of-war between the two realms who will do anything to win the right to her soul. Who can she trust? And what if the realm she's drawn to isn't where the boy she's falling for lives? She just has to stay alive long enough to make a decision…

Shiny world building, lackluster characters and romance. (3 stars)

While I think Gena Showalter is one of the nicest and most approachable authors I read, I must admit that her books have always been hit or miss for me, rarely in between. Which made Firstlife a really tough read at first. A friend and I were reading it around the same time and both of us had the same problem... it was hard to get into the story during the first 100 or so pages.

This is some really complex world building and it's capped off with a heroine that's not very likable. As a reader I tend to love the unlikable women that other readers loathe but I found that with Ten it just made me struggle to care what happened to her. In turn that also left me feeling very disconnected from the romantic love triangle thing she finds herself involved in. I just wanted her to hurry up and pick a side already so the story could progress. I'm also the rare reader who loves love triangles, especially in YA, so the fact that I reached epic eye rolling over her torn feelings between Archer and Killian only made this a harder book to get into.

My quibbles aside, I think the world building is really interesting. The near 500 pages wasn't even enough to get below the skin of it and satisfy my many questions and ponderings about it. While I didn't particularly like the characters or dig the romance, I think I'll give the next book a shot simply to see more of the world building fleshed out.

If you hate love triangles and find extremely complex fantasy/scifi worlds daunting this is definitely not for you. I would recommend it to readers who are interested in religion and mythologies and those who find problematic, unlikable female protagonists enjoyable.

Weekend Reading [2/19 - 2/21] :: Reading High & Geeking Out

What day is it? *blinking eyes blearily*

After a very involved work week I must say I'm feeling good but a bit like I've been in a cave all week. Like the world went on without me while I was busy. Ha!

Something I never really missed when I stopped working years ago to be an at-home-mom was having coworkers. Now that I have a digi-commute and am in a field I'm truly passionate about, I find that my coworkers are one of the best parts of the job. Everyone is so talented and creative. I feel downright moronic next to them all. And I'm discovering that most of us are quite geeky which makes for some fun chats. I snapped today's header photo to show a couple of the gals just how much my geek takes over our home. This is just a tiny smidgen of it and you can't even see the other side which has much more. And this is just the top of my desk.

What do you geek about? That was also part of our discussion, how you don't have to be into comics or scifi movies or video games to be a geek. Everyone geeks about something. Reality TV. Sports. Fashion. All totally geekable things.

Maybe you just geek about books. That my readers, is pretty much the best thing to geek about. ;)

So what book are you geeking out about this weekend? For work I'm working my way through Nina Croft's The Order series. It's an older series that I never got around to reading and I can't recall why. So far it reminds me a bit of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Lara Adrian's Midnight Breeds, and Jacquelyn Frank's Nightwalkers. I'm honestly stumped why no one seems to have read these.

Just-because-reading wise I'm working on something non-fiction because I needed a mental palette cleanser and it interested me... Hot to Smoke Pot (Properly) by David Bienenstock. Since being diagnosed with epilepsy I've experienced plenty of unpleasant side effects from the medications that I have to take every single day for the rest of my life. Hearing about pot as an alternative made me curious, then it got legalized in the state I grew up in so I've been extra curious. I started reading about other ailments it could work for—namely insomnia and anxiety disorders—and so when this book popped up on NetGalley it sounded like something I'd enjoy and I am. Yeah, yeah shut up, I'm reading about drugs. I also read lots of sex and violence so bite me. :P

Well, I suppose I ought to shut down the computer and put on some pajamas. I'm all out of wine thanks to hosting the hilarious and wonderful #BrazenHappyHour earlier this week. Did you attend? I totally think it should be a thing we do once a month. I love hosting it. But I have some nice herbal tea and some chocolates so I think I could make a good night out of it. lol

Have a beautiful weekend dear readers and don't forget to comment with what you're currently reading! ♥ -- Rhi

You deserve a good night's read...

You've been waiting for it. Aching for it. Nibbling your lip in anticipation of it. Begging for it. Your next deliciously naughty read... what did you think we meant? ;)

Emergency Engagement by Samanthe Beck

Glass artist Savannah Smith expected a marriage proposal for Thanksgiving—just not from her strong, silent, super-hot neighbor. Then his family shows up.
Fate dealt a crippling blow to paramedic Beau Montgomery’s heart, and he isn’t about to put it at risk again. Except, with his mother crying tears of joy over his surprise engagement to the sexy little blonde next door, he can’t bring himself to ruin her “Christmas miracle.”
Somewhere between the paint can to the head and the chaotic family trip to the ER, Beau manages to talk Savannah into being his fake fiancée long enough to survive the holidays.
If, of course, they don’t fall in love first…

About Tracy Wolff:

Tracy Wolff collects books, English degrees and lipsticks and has been known to forget where—and sometimes who—she is when immersed in a great novel. At six she wrote her first short story—something with a rainbow and a prince—and at seven she forayed into the wonderful world of girls lit with her first Judy Blume novel. By ten she’d read everything in the young adult and classics sections of her local bookstore, so in desperation her mom started her on romance novels. And from the first page of the first book, Tracy knew she’d found her life-long love. Now an English professor at her local community college, she writes romances that run the gamut from contemporary to paranormal to erotic suspense.

And for all of those who want the unedited version:
Tracy Wolff lives with four men, teaches writing to local college students and spends as much time as she can manage immersed in worlds of her own creation. Married to the alpha hero of her dreams for twelve years, she is the mother of three young sons who spend most of their time trying to make her as crazy as possible.

Review: Shallow Graves by Kali Wallace

Shallow Graves by Kali Wallace
Notes: ARC received via Amazon Vine.
Young Adult, Horror, Paranormal
Ebook/Print/Audio (368 pages, KATHERINE TEGEN BOOKS)
For fans of Holly Black and Nova Ren Suma, a gripping, hauntingly atmospheric novel about murder, revenge, and a world where monsters—human and otherwise—lurk at the fringes.
When seventeen-year-old Breezy Lin wakes up in a shallow grave one year after her death, she doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious—and not only that, she’s able to sense who around her is hiding a murderous past. In life, Breezy was always drawn to the elegance of the universe and the mystery of the stars. Now she must set out to find answers and discover what is to become of her in the gritty, dangerous world to which she now belongs—where killers hide in plain sight, and a sinister cult is hunting for strange creatures like her. What she finds is at once empowering, redemptive, and dangerous.
Tense, complex, and wholly engaging, Shallow Graves is a stunning first novel from Kali Wallace.

Supernaturally weird and wonderous... (4 stars)

It's been a while since I read something as odd and engaging as Shallow Graves. But it's also the kind of book I find very hard to review because anything I comment on feels like a spoiler. Suffice it to say that if you've enjoyed chilling young adult reads like The Foxglove Killings, Daughter Unto Devils, or Servant of the Storm, you're going to be swept away in a similar hard-to-put-down story.

I wouldn't call it scary or even true blue horror if you're an adult reader but I'm quite certain if I had read this as a teen I would have slept with the lights on for a night or two after finishing it. If you enjoy being freaked out by a twisted read with unusual supernatural elements I recommend giving it a read.

After three months of silence, the black tattoo on Emma’s wrist glows with a vengeance once again, and that can only mean one thing…the vampires are back.  But when she meets the mysterious Jake Cunningham, who has a few powers of his own, she may not be alone in the fight.

In the midst of battle, Jake and Emma find love, but as their adventures continue, that love—and their souls—will be tested beyond imaginable limits.

For this intrepid pair, staying together may be harder than staying alive.

Three full-length novels: Violet Midnight, Violet Dawn, Violet Storm. Plus a bonus novella: Witness the moment Emma woke up in the hospital with her emblematic purple eyes and glowing tattoo in the never before published novella, A Hunter Revealed.

Weekend Reading [02/12-02-14] :: Whatcha Readin' & Comment Love

Heeeello weekend! I am ready to dive into you.

And how are my awesome readers this fine Friday? Hopefully fantastic is your answer. I've been so busy with a side of busy that I haven't had time to post a weekend reading in a while, I've missed you guys!

What's new? Who has a great new book to read? Or an old favorite that's getting reread, maybe? Let me know in the comments what you're reading this weekend.

Me? I'm trying to get into FIRST LIFE by Gena Showalter. It's been a while since I read one of her books and she can be all over the place for me ratings wise. I've read stuff by Gena that I've loved and stuff that I've disliked. But she's a sweetie, years and years ago before I was a blogger she once offered a recommendation to me when I had posted on Amazon's paranormal romance forum (yeah that long ago). I thought it was quite kind of her to take the time to suggest a book based on the request of 'virgin heroes'. You just don't see a lot of them and they're a personal favorite.

Work reading this weekend is all about the Brazens. I'm finishing up FADE INTO YOU by Tracy Wolff—oh so angsty!—and looking forward to seeing what other fans think of it next week. Oooh, and don't forget to preorder because Tracy has a preorder giveaway going on until Sunday!

My other read is a first in a new series that launches in March and is super sexy. It's really reminding me of the early Brazen books that I loved. If you're following me on Goodreads you'll see it in my reading there.

There's a holiday this weekend huh? The hubs and I have never been big on celebrating it and we'll both be working on it this year so we're just gonna go see Deadpool on Saturday and call it good. If you have a sweetie do you and your special someone do anything special?

Have a good one guys and don't forget to comment! -- Rhi

Share the Love Giveaway Hop [Ends 2/15]

It’s time for our annual Share the Love giveaway hop! This hop is a little different and all about sharing our favorite bloggers and authors with you! There’s a giveaway at every blog so visit them all and find out who all we just adore.

I was recently rubbed the wrong way when the author of one of my favorite book series said something to the effect that posting about pets/cooking/family/etc. on social media is not how one sells books. I get it, I really do, but in addition to being an amazing story teller an author really can be more to some people. My auto-buy authors, the ones I preorder when there's no cover or blurb, are the ones I would want to be friends with if they were my neighbor because they know how to brand themselves. I don't auto-buy the above mentioned author and now I realize why she never made it onto my list in spite of very much enjoying her work.

As a reader, I love complex and flawed characters... and getting to know the people who created them often enhances the experience. Knowing an author is a person who has the same struggles or passions as I do helps me feel connected to their work more deeply. When they share an interesting article or a funny anecdote or a recipe they loved I don't just see a writer, I see a person, and most of my auto-buy authors are these types. They make me feel less alone and ya know what? When I spend $10 on a book and I see that an author went out and took their kid to the movies or is enjoying a bottle of wine or is heading to a fancon it makes me feel good. I got to enjoy something I paid for and in a weird sort of way I feel like what I paid had a bigger value because they get a livable income and get to have pleasures in their lives too.

With that in mind please go follow these 5 authors who have enriched my life with their wonderful writing and their fantastic social media presence.
