Halloween Wishes & a Note

My dearest RhiReaders, here's wishing you a very Happy Halloween!

I know it's been a wee bit quiet on my end and I apologize. We had out-of-town visitors, illness, and a suicide in the family in recent weeks and things have been a bit more scattered with these things going on. It's put me in a bit of a quiet, extra introverted mindset that's making writing posts/reviews challenging. Here's hoping November will prove to be much less eventful.

If you're reading this I'd love to know what's new in your world. Even if it's just your current read. XO -- Rhi

Review: The Pacifist by Jenny Holiday [+ giveaway!]

She's done holding her peace...

Laraline Reynolds has spent her entire life as a certified Good Girl. The perpetual peacemaker in her volatile, conservative family, Laraline promises herself that she'll spend her last year of grad school getting in touch with her inner rebel before she settles down and marries her family-approved long-distance boyfriend. But Laraline's Year of Fun quickly turns into something more complicated, and she finds herself at the forefront of a movement to change her college's sexual assault policy.

It's the Year of No Fun for Tony Bianchi. A fifth-year senior, he needs to graduate, so he's put a moratorium on his two favorite distractions: girls and photography. But when Laraline comes calling, needing some photos for her cause--and for her campaign for a seat on the college board of governors--Tony's resistance comes crashing down.

They both fall hard. But while Tony is ready to give it everything he's got, Laraline is afraid. She wasn't prepared for her one-year rebellion to lead her to the life she truly wants. In order to break free from her family, she'll need to do the scariest thing of all--follow her heart.

My Review:

A new fave from an old fave! (5 stars)

I have yet to read something by Jenny Holiday that wasn't phenomenal and The Pacifist is no exception. She managed to take a time period that doesn't get a lot of romance novel love (uh do we call 80's romances historical yet? lol) and make it my new favorite.

Laraline is a character who has devoted way too much of her life to trying to please her parents. But buried under her peacemaking ways is a fighter ready to challenge old standards. With Tony she finds happiness but knows she can't keep him and make her family happy. For the first time in her life the pacifist might have to be a warrior and choose her own future.

This read was fast! I couldn't put it down and I absolutely loved the characters of Tony and Laraline. I wasn't too sure about reading an 80's set romance but woah was it refreshing! No cell phones especially changed the communication in a way that felt more intimate. The romance was sweet, intense, and very sexy. I enjoyed it so much that I've already gone and bought the other two in the series!

Review: Glitter by Aprilynne Pike

Glitter by Aprilynne Pike
Notes: ARC received via Amazon Vine.
Young Adult, Futuristic
Print/Digital (384 pages, RANDOMHOUSE)
Outside the palace of Versailles, it’s modern day. Inside, the people dress, eat, and act like it’s the eighteenth century—with the added bonus of technology to make court life lavish, privileged, and frivolous. The palace has every indulgence, but for one pretty young thing, it’s about to become a very beautiful prison.
When Danica witnesses an act of murder by the young king, her mother makes a cruel power play . . . blackmailing the king into making Dani his queen. When she turns eighteen, Dani will marry the most ruthless and dangerous man of the court. She has six months to escape her terrifying destiny. Six months to raise enough money to disappear into the real world beyond the palace gates.
Her ticket out? Glitter. A drug so powerful that a tiny pinch mixed into a pot of rouge or lip gloss can make the wearer hopelessly addicted. Addicted to a drug Dani can sell for more money than she ever dreamed.
But in Versailles, secrets are impossible to keep. And the most dangerous secret—falling for a drug dealer outside the palace walls—is one risk she has to take.

All that glitters... (3 stars)

GLITTER is a fascinating blend of futuristic and historical that I was quite eager to unravel. Conceptually it's a bit difficult to accept because it's a very complicated blend of business and country (ie. the CEO is the King). It will require a lot of suspension of disbelief.

While part of me found the world of GLITTER to be enjoyably complex and the characters fairly interesting, the overall plot felt painfully slow. I also found Dani's reason for selling Glitter wound up making her very unlikable.

Though this one didn't really work for me I think readers who enjoy historical YA will find the interesting idea worth reading for.

Modern-day bounty hunter Bethany Bennett helps her brother track two fugitives to a forest outside of Houston, Texas. After Beth and her brother are both seriously injured, a mysterious figure suddenly looms over her. And, when the smoke clears, Beth finds herself not only in another place, but in another time.   As Lord Robert, Earl of Fosterly, attempts to identify and track down the nameless enemy who has been plaguing his lands and people with violence, the most peculiar woman stumbles into his path. Small, vulnerable, yet possessed of a bold, fiery spirit and wicked sense of humor, she persists in dubbing Robert and his men members of something called a medieval reenactment group . . . until she sees his castle and labels herself mad. It seems bounty hunter Bethany Bennett has come to him from the future, bringing with her laughter and chaos, swiftly winning the hearts of his people and inspiring within him a love he thought he would never experience again. Excerpt:

Robert learned something new about her then.  When Bethany decided to place her trust in someone, she gave her full trust.

After placing her twenty-two on the ground a few feet from the water’s edge, she proceeded to disrobe without even asking him to give her his back.  She discarded her boots and odd, thick, ankle-high white hose first.  Then she parted her long-sleeved tunic down the middle and shrugged out of it.

He stepped forward and extended one hand.

A question in her gaze, Bethany handed him the jacket, he thought she called it.

“I thought to wash it for you whilst you bathe.”

Her eyes narrowed.  “Are you sure you’re real?”

“I do not understand.”

Shaking her head, she lowered her hands to the sides of her odd vest.  “You’re too good to be true, Robert.  First you say you would give your life to protect me.”  Rrrrip.  “Then you kneel in icy water and wash my hair.”  Rrrrip.  “And now you’re offering to wash my filthy clothes for me.”  Rrrrip.  Rrrrip.  She lifted the vest over her head.  “No man is that nice.”  Tossing it aside, she reached for her belt.  A few nimble pulls and it joined her vest at her feet.

Weekend Reading [10/07-10/09] :: Sleep is Good & Pushing Comfort Zones in Reading

Good morning RhiReaders!

Funny story... I was so dead tired after I got home from work yesterday that I fell asleep by accident. The new job is fantastic but I think it's going to take some time to adjust so I'm not so tired on Fridays that I crash.

Since my week was really busy with a new job and such I didn't get a ton of reading fit in. I did manage to finish up several almost-done books though which was nice. I managed to clear out a bunch of them on my Currently Reading list on Goodreads which felt so good. I am still way behind on my challenge for the year though. How are you doing on yours?

Today I'm starting DARK HORSES by Cecily Von Ziegesar which is not something I would have picked up on my own. But when it came through my Amazon Vine queue its interesting premise made me decide to try something a little outside my usual selections. I've been working on kids books, non-fiction, and stuff for the other blog so I just needed something unexpected to spice up my reading.

I have a massive amount of cleaning and catch-up stuff to do around the house so I best be off for now. I hope to sit down and write some reviews tomorrow and do a little bit of post preplanning for the Blog Ahead challenge. Hope your weekend is going beautifully. See ya on the flipside! -- Rhi

Spotlight: A FOOL FOR YOU by Katee Robert [Excerpt & Giveaway]

A FOOL FOR YOU
by Katee Robert

He never thought he’d get a second chance. A Fool For You is the third and final novel in the Foolproof Love series from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Katee Robert and Entangled Publishing.

It’s been thirteen years since Hope Moore left Devil’s Falls, land of sexy cowboys and bad memories. Back for the weekend, she has no intention of seeing the man she never got over…or the two of them getting down and dirty. It’s just a belated goodbye, right? No harm, no foul.
Until six weeks later, when her pregnancy test comes back positive…
Daniel Rodriguez hasn’t forgiven himself for how things went down with Hope all those years ago. He knows she’s better off without him, but when she shows up on his doorstep, panicking because she’s pregnant with his baby, he can’t help seeing it as a chance to make up for the past.
Too bad Hope has no intention of going along with his plans.

Please enjoy an excerpt:

He turned to find Hope standing behind him. Again. “You sure move quiet when you want to.” Especially for a woman with a bum leg. Not that he could say as much without sounding like a jackass.
“You mean since I had my knee replaced.” Of course she knew what he meant anyway. Apparently damn near reading his mind was one annoying habit she hadn’t outgrown.
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to.” She leveraged herself down next to him, the move not quiet as smooth as it’d been when she was eighteen.
Daniel almost cursed. He had to stop doing that. Comparing her now to how she was then wasn’t fair to either of them. It was another lifetime completely, and thinking about it was just fucking depressing. “Hope—”
“Are you seeing anyone?”

Chapter One

Crouched in a defensive stance, Lachlan Wallace’s mind refused to focus. Sweat streamed from his brow, drained into his eyes and blurred his vision. His breathing rushed through his ears like an angry river. Everything around him moved in slow motion. He rubbed his forearm across his face and his white sleeve came back with a swath of blood.
But nothing hurt, except Lachlan’s heart.

Excerpt:

Wiping the crumbs off his jeans, Finn reached into his backpack and threw an apple at me, which I caught with a deft hand.
“Nice catch,” he said, grinning.
I flung the apple up into the air and caught it in my other hand. “I played third base. Little League.”
“You mean baseball?”
I nodded.
“Never seen a game myself.”
I gaped at Finn. “You mean you live in Chicago, and you’ve never been to a Cubs game?”
He shrugged. “Not interested.” Finn’s eyes lit up, and he shoved me playfully with his shoulder. “Now hurling. That’s a good game.”
“Well, they’re totally different. That’s not even a fair comparison,” I said with a sniff.
“Fair enough,” Finn said, wistful. “Really, nothing can compare with hurling.”
I laughed. “Moiré tried to explain the rules to me once, but she lost me after hurley stick.”
“Oh, it’s simple, really.” Finn jumped down and rummaged around the rubble until he found a large branch. He swung it, the stick cutting through the air, slowly at first, but then with more force. Finn’s chest muscles rippled between the flaps of his leather jacket, and my blood pulsed in my ears at the sight of him, dancing from foot to foot as he practiced his swing.
“Now the point of hurling,” Finn began, “is to use this stick, the hurley stick.” He raised the old branch in the air. “To get a little ball called a sliotar either over or under your opponent’s goalpost.” Finn picked up a handful of small rocks and, using his “hurley,” sent a pebble whizzing over the stone wall, inches from my head.
“Hey, watch it!”

Finn smiled up at me. “You with me so far?”
I nodded.
“Now,” Finn said. “If the ball flies under the goalpost into the net, it’s worth three points.” Finn sent another pebble skittering against the wall, right next to my boot. “But you have to get it past the keeper, and that can be a challenge.” His eyes glittered at me as he swung his stick again. He threw a rock up in the air and with a loud thwack sent it zooming over the wall. I held out my hand and caught the stone, the look on Finn’s face making up for the sting of impact.
“And he’s out!” I cried, jumping off the wall and doing a mock victory dance. “Cubs win!  Cubs win! Wooooooooooooo!”
Finn stalked over to me and grabbed my fist. “Will you settle down!” he said, attempting to pry the pebble from my grip. “I’m trying to teach you a three-thousand-year-old art form and you’re nattering on about the fecking Cubs.”
I giggled, snatching his hurley stick from his hands.
