About the author:

Jenny Holiday started writing at age nine when her awesome fourth grade teacher gave her a notebook and told her to start writing some stories. That first batch featured mass murderers on the loose, alien invasions, and hauntings. (Looking back, she’s amazed no one sent her to a kid-shrink.) She’s been writing ever since. After a brief detour to get a PhD in geography, she worked as a professional writer, producing everything from speeches to magazine articles. More recently, her tastes having evolved from alien invasions to happily-ever-afters, she tried her hand at romance. A lifelong city-lover, she lives in Toronto, Canada, with her family. She is represented by Courtney Miller-Callihan of Greenburger Associates.

Weekend Reading [07/29-07/31] :: When the world feels effed...

I've been watching a flock of blackbirds that have been happily eating (stale) popcorn in my garden. Some days watching critters out my window is about all I can handle of the outside world.

I've been actively avoiding social media this week. This summer the world has just felt full of horror and social media is the place I find it constantly churning. I had to think of it as a mental health break because seeing so much awful day in and day out was starting to weigh me down. I can't say I've been tearing through my reads this week but I have felt more focused when I'm reading.

When the world (or life in general) feels like too much do you read more? Do you find yourself revisiting favorite series or have a book you think of as a comfort read?

I decided to write this post on Thursday afternoon because I know I'll be too busy tomorrow—I'm having family visit this weekend. Meeting my sister-in-law for the first time. Seeing my niece for the first time since she was a baby. And seeing my mom and brother for the first time in several years. Which means I probably won't be doing any reading. It's a very short visit so I want to spend as much time catching up and enjoying their company as I can.

Do you have any special weekend plans? If I do wind up sneaking in some reading time I am working on I'm Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl by Gretchen McNeil. I'm liking the idea more than the execution at this point in the read but I'll be reviewing it so I'll elaborate more at a later date. What are you reading? Is it good so far?

On that note I better go change the sheets on the guest bed and vacuum because my dog has been shedding like a sheep being sheared. lol Have a wonderful weekend and tune in next week as I have several events happening! -- Rhi

“It’s good, and wackily funny, and mostly ridiculously believable…An unstoppable magic realism action thriller.” – Tom Flood, Award-winning Author

Book Excerpt:
Chapter 1

It was five in the morning and completely dark outside. In late spring the sun wouldn’t rise over the ski mountain for another two hours. For a few little creatures out there, the day had already begun. There was a rustle in the leaves below her window, probably a deer mouse making her way to a nest somewhere. She heard a tiny peep that could have been a downy woodpecker chick.
She rolled over, lingering in the space between her nightmares and her morning zombie routine, and remembered it was Saturday. Her swim team only trained once today but it was usually a strong session. She would eventually have to stumble out of bed, gather her bag, eat something and cycle to the pool.
Laying there a moment longer, she listened for any sounds in her parents’ huge, empty house, but heard none. Her mom would also be hearing the morning noises from her meditation cushion in her yoga room.

F*ck being good. When you’ve been screwed over by Mr. Wrong, let a Spectacular Rascal show you how good it feels to be bad.

My best friend and boss at Magnificent Bastard consulting—get revenge on your ex or your money back—is the smooth, successful New York businessman type. But me? I’ve got what it takes to make sure your dangerous dick of an ex thinks twice before he knocks on your door again.

Or I thought I did, until I meet my latest client: Catherine Jones, a.k.a. Polka Dot Panties. Former college running partner, sexiest woman I’ve ever almost de-virginized, and the only girl I’ve never been able to get out of my damn head.

Now my one-that-got-away is looking up at me with those big green eyes, daring me to take on an ex as dick-ish and dangerous as hers.

Well, you know what they say—it’s all fun and games until you’re making out on top of a mobster’s limousine.

Soon Catherine and I are in deep. We’re on guard, on the run, and on top of each other every chance we get. But outsmarting her mobster ex is the least of my worries, especially when I start thinking our falling hard act isn’t an act at all.

But after all this time, can a guy from the wrong side of the tracks find his forever with the sweet and sexy polka-dot-pantied girl next door?

Warning: SPECTACULAR RASCAL is a stand-alone erotic romance told from the hero’s point of view. No cliffhanger. Lots of dirty talk.

  Exclusive Excerpt:

This is the life. Luna didn’t care what anybody said. Nothing could compare to the enjoyment of sunbathing in a warm patch of sunlight while the chill of fall gripped the city outside.
She stretched on the fabric-covered pile of cushions, extending all of her limbs, practically purring in delight as the rays of brilliant sunshine streamed through the large plate-glass window of the condo.
“What the fuck are you doing?” The shocked male voice didn’t startle her. Noisy wolf. She’d heard him coming for a while. He really needed to work on his stealth technique.
Exhibiting a laziness that usually only a male lion could achieve, Luna opened an eye and peered at the man standing, arms folded over his chest, across the room. He glared—how cute. “Hi, Jeoff.”
“Don’t you hi Jeoff me. What the hell are you doing in my apartment? Naked.”

Blog Tour: Wrong Bed Reunion by Candy Sloane

Dear readers, I absolutely loved the smutty goodness of Best Friends with Benefits when I was working on publicity for it earlier this year. I will never look at a Coke vending machine the same way again! *blush* Valerie and Alec were great but Georgia and Gideon really stood to me. I love it when a geeky guy gets the girl. Be sure and pick up both books if you haven't yet, and be sure you have a cold drink on hand... this series is HOT HOT HOT!!! ♥ -- Rhi

Fake relationship, real temptation.

Georgia Cahill is at her high school reunion to seduce the quarterback boyfriend she left behind ten years ago. Unfortunately, one too many margaritas accidentally land her in bed with Gideon Neill, the class geek, instead. By the time she realizes her mistake, she’s the one being seduced.

Gideon Neill is a new man—confident, gorgeous, and about to make the biggest business deal of his life. He just needs a girlfriend to land it. Georgia provides the perfect solution—he’ll help her make her ex jealous if she’ll be on his arm for his business deal. But he quickly realizes he likes her in his arms even better!

Who’d have guessed that sleeping with the enemy would be so hot? But it isn’t long before their act becomes all too real. Could this truly be love? Or is it just the best sex they’ve ever had?

His green eyes flashed like exploding planets, and he widened his shoulders. “I’m an asshole?” He laughed. “No, Peach, you’re the one who treated me like shit. You let your boyfriend bully me. You laughed in my face when I tried to help you. …” He paused. She knew what he didn’t say. He was referring to the day he truly saw her and she decided to bury him instead. Guilt slithered through her limbs like a snake. He fixated his eyes further. “And the worst part is that even after all that, I still want to fuck you.” He moved closer, his shadow suffocating her. The sudden darkness forced her to swallow, but her heart was in her throat, blocking whatever words could come. Not that she knew how to respond. Her body did, though; it sputtered to life, purred from the apex of her thighs. “When you’re around, I’m not going to be able to think about anything but sinking my cock in so deep that your eyes roll back, that you wish you never met me. God knows,”
he said, his breath peppering her lips, “I wish I’d never met you.” She was glued to the wall. She was covered in his words. If she didn’t speak, he would keep going. She couldn’t take much more and make it out of the shed with her underwear intact. Considering she’d left her thong in Gideon’s room last night, she needed every pair she had left. “Is that all?” She kept her eyes on his sinful lips, desperate to keep her cool, but the purr in her panties grew to a roar. Her lungs felt like they were filled with bees. “No.” He retained his relentless stance, the broad expanse of his chest obscuring her view like a navy blue shield. “See, the problem is I don’t want to fuck you. I want to forget last night ever happened.” She forced herself to breathe, but the air did nothing for her lightheadedness. “Then forget it.” She tried to remain nonchalant, tried to remind herself it was what she’d demanded, even though she couldn’t forget it, either. He shook his head, the skin around his lips tight. “Considering how you and your group of friends treated me in high school, it should be easy. You guys made me question everything about who I was because I wasn’t just like you.” She looked down as she caught what he’d hurled into the center of her stomach. His experience in high school was what every day in L.A. had been like for her. She forced herself back to his eyes, trying to pull her own words out, but she could never admit her own pain. Not to Gideon. Not to anyone. “You’re not worthy of the plunge of my cock.” He took off his glasses, shoved them in his back pocket, and left barely a breath between their bodies. His erection ground
against her leg. He wasn’t bothering to hide it. She should have pushed him away. She should have done a lot of things, but all she could do was stand there, motionless and waiting to see what he did next. “But you can feel that my cock doesn’t seem to give a shit about that.” His breath blazed on her lips. Her throat turned to dust, dry and betraying. “Say something.” His gaze was as tight as their bodies, as insistent as his sculpted muscles pressing into her breasts. “Tell me to fuck you, or tell me to go to hell.” “Go to hell,” she managed, her heart pumping so fast the room was spinning. He balanced his hands against the wall on either side of her. “I’m there with you. I’m right fucking there, Peach.” She closed her eyes for a moment, but it didn’t ease the dizziness, didn’t soothe the ache in her chest, between her legs. She feared nothing but this man would. “It’s hell wanting you. Hell having tasted you and knowing that I could have had you if I’d just taken what you offered, what you begged for last night. So unless you want to fuck me so I can think straight in your presence, you need to stay the fuck away from me.” Her arms itched at her sides. “What about our deal?”

Blog Tour: Life After Juliet by Shannon Lee Alexander [Guestpost & Giveaway]

Dear readers, I am so fortunate to have a guest post from author Shannon Lee Alexander today. Knowing what I did about this novel and its companion I asked if she would write about 5 books that helped her cope with grief and/or loss. Please welcome Shannon and be sure and pick up a copy of Life After Juliet today! -- Rhi

There are many kinds of grief and all different types of loss in our lives. Both LOVE AND OTHER UNKNOWN VARIABLES and LIFE AFTER JULIET were fueled by a great loss in my life and my need to make sense of it. Before writing away my grief, I read to try to better understand how it is that we live in a world both great and terrible. Throughout my life, these are five books that have helped me grow and cope with loss of all kinds.
1. CHARLOTTE’S WEB – One of the first books I ever encountered that forced me to learn about grief was E.B. White’s CHARLOTTE’S WEB. I still try not to smash spiders, even thirty years after reading this book!
2. BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA and WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS – I’ve grouped these two classic children’s stories together because I remember reading them at about the same time. Katherine Patterson’s BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA and Wilson Rawls’s WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS were the first two books I remember crying over—and by crying I mean sobbing uncontrollably! Through them I learned about friendship and love and loyalty, and about letting go, too.
3. THE VELVETEEN RABBIT – I’ve always had a soft spot for Margery Williams’s story about a stuffed bunny who is made real by the power of love. I myself had a stuffed bunny growing up (still keep him in my office on my bookshelf, actually). But I didn’t realize what the story meant to me until I had a child of my own with a stuffed bunny of her own. My own childhood was officially over. And that was something I suddenly felt a need to grieve. But that same nursery magic that made the Velveteen Rabbit real all those years ago, was still working to make me into something much more than I’d ever been before—a mother. No matter what happens, how fast my children grow, or where they end up, I’ll always be their mother, just as The Velveteen Rabbit’s heart would always belong to the boy. Sometimes, on the other side of loss, we find beauty.
4. THE DEATHLY HALLOWS – After finishing J.K. Rowling’s beautiful series, having read each book as it was first released, which sometimes meant waiting years between instalments, when I finally turned the last page of the last book, I was consumed with loss. It was the end of a long and wonderful journey in my life, one that had reawakened my love for books for young people.
5. A MONSTER CALLS – I’m a huge Patrick Ness fan, both his writing and his persona in interviews and on social media. When he was entrusted with Siobhan Dowd’s idea for a story about a boy whose mother had cancer, he created the powerful (and for me Earth shattering) story A MONSTER CALLS. I became forever indebted to him after reading this book. I won’t go into details so as not to spoil anything, but the boy is visited by a monster who demands the boy tell the truth, a deep and frightening truth. Let me just say, I was stunned and shaken to discover that Conor’s truth was one I shared, and I bet many who have watched loved ones fight hideous diseases would know this same truth, too.
Honorable mentions: Most of the books on this list are many years old now (some of them are many, many, many years old), so I’d like to add two newer books that have recently helped me understand new and beautiful things about grief and loss.
Middle grade readers should check out THE THING ABOUT JELLYFISH by Ali Benjamin. This story about a girl determined to find the exact cause of her friend’s accidental drowning is as beautiful as the delicate jellies it describes.
Young adults (and adults cool enough to read YA) should read Jeff Zentner’s THE SERPENT KING. I may have (definitely) cried over the pages of this beautiful story about three brave friends seeking their futures.

Becca Hanson was never able to make sense of the real world. When her best friend Charlotte died, she gave up on it altogether. Fortunately, Becca can count on her books to escape—to other times, other places, other people...
Until she meets Max Herrera. He’s experienced loss, too, and his gorgeous, dark eyes see Becca the way no one else in school can.
As it turns out, kissing is a lot better in real life than on a page. But love and life are a lot more complicated in the real world...and happy endings aren't always guaranteed.
The companion novel to Love and Other Unknown Variables is an exploration of loss and regret, of kissing and love, and most importantly, a celebration of hope and discovering a life worth living again.

Review: The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn’t thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she’d claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse where she once lived, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy.

A groundbreaking work as delicate as a butterfly’s wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out.

“[Gaiman’s] mind is a dark fathomless ocean, and every time I sink into it, this world fades, replaced by one far more terrible and beautiful in which I will happily drown.” New York Times Book Review

My Review:

I've read many of Gaiman's titles for children in the past and my young daughter and I love them. Yet, like many great notable authors it's difficult to know where to start trying his adult work. I suppose it's fitting to say that this was where I chose to dive in (pun not intended) and I think it's a perfect gateway novel for newbies.

While it starts off a bit slow and really makes you work for every revelation, once it gets good it's impossible to stop reading. Strange, uncomfortable, unnerving but never quite scary, I found myself devouring it well into the night. If you delight in the unusual and are seeking a book that will grip you by the throat just a little too tightly, this is a must read. (4 stars)

Remember Yesterday -eBook

Release Date: October 4, 2016

Sixteen-year-old Jessa Stone is the most valuable citizen in Eden City. Her psychic abilities could lead to significant scientific discoveries, if only she’d let TechRA study her. But ten years ago, the scientists kidnapped and experimented on her, leading to severe ramifications for her sister, Callie. She’d much rather break into their labs and sabotage their research—starting with Tanner Callahan, budding scientist and the boy she loathes most at school.

The past isn’t what she assumed, though—and neither is Tanner. He’s not the arrogant jerk she thought he was. And his research opens the door to the possibility that Jessa can rectify a fatal mistake made ten years earlier. She’ll do anything to change the past and save her sister—even if it means teaming up with the enemy she swore to defeat.

And don't miss the first book in the series...

ForgetTomorrow_500Forget Tomorrow (Forget Tomorrow, #1)

Imagine a world where your destiny has already been decided…by your future self.

It’s Callie’s seventeenth birthday and, like everyone else, she’s eagerly awaiting her vision―a memory sent back in time to sculpt each citizen into the person they’re meant to be. A world-class swimmer. A renowned scientist.

Or in Callie’s case, a criminal.

In her vision, she sees herself murdering her gifted younger sister. Before she can process what it means, Callie is arrested and placed in Limbo―a prison for those destined to break the law. With the help of her childhood crush, Logan, a boy she hasn’t spoken to in five years, she escapes the hellish prison.

But on the run from her future, as well as the government, Callie sets in motion a chain of events that she hopes will change her fate. If not, she must figure out how to protect her sister from the biggest threat of all—Callie, herself.
