Mini Reviews: Death Vigil, The Sandman: Overture, & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Casey & April

Notes: All of the below reviewed graphic novels were received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Death Vigil Volume 1 by Stjepan Sejic (Author, Illustrator)
Graphic Novel, Fantasy
Ebook/Print (284 pages, IMAGE)
Gifted? Join the Death Vigil in their ongoing war against the ever-growing power of the Primordial Enemy! Only catch is you have to die first. Become a corporeal immortal Death Knight and obtain reality-altering weaponry in the never-ending battle between good and evil.

An excellent book! (5 stars)

I became familiar with Seijic through his work on Rat Queens which is a phenomenal comic. I was sad that he left the comic and thought I'd seek out some of his other work. I'm really glad I did because DEATH VIGIL is fantastic. It's clever, beautifully illustrated, and has a solid heart. I quickly cared about the characters and wasn't remotely ready for the end of the volume when it came. I'll definitely have my eyes out for more of this story.

The Sandman: Overture Deluxe Edition by Neil Gaiman (Author), JH Williams III (Illustrator)
Graphic Novel, Fantasy, Science Fiction
Ebook/Print (224 pages, VERTIGO)
Twenty-five years since THE SANDMAN first changed the landscape of modern comics, Neil Gaiman's legendary series is back in a deluxe edition!
THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE heralds New York Times best-selling writer Neil Gaiman's return to the art form that made him famous, ably abetted by artistic luminary JH Williams III (BATWOMAN, PROMETHEA), whose lush, widescreen images provide an epic scope to The Sandman's origin story. From the birth of a galaxy to the moment that Morpheus is captured, THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE will feature cameo appearances by fan-favorite characters such as The Corinthian, Merv Pumpkinhead and, of course, the Dream King's siblings: Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny.

Not for newbies. (3 stars)

Somehow I managed to never be introduced to The Sandman and, as with many IPs, I found myself lost as to where to start once I wanted to. I figured this might be great since it provides backstory, an origin story. Sadly, while it was interesting, intriguing, and beautiful... I was so confused and lost. If like myself, you're a Sandman newbie please don't make my mistake and start here.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Casey & April by Mariko Tamaki (Author), Irene Koh (Illustrator, Contributor)
Graphic Novel, Science Fiction,
Print (104 pages, IDW)
Introducing a very unique TMNT tale starring Casey Jones and April O'Neil, by acclaimed writer Mariko Tamaki. Author of the bestselling, highly praised, Caldecott Award-winning graphic novel, This One Last Summer. Casey and April take a road trip to the southwest to dig up more clues about the mysterious Pantheon that has seemingly been pulling the strings on the Turtles' lives from the beginning. They will find even deeper mystery, unexpected danger, and start a new chapter in their relationship.

A nice diversion. (4 stars)

I love it when characters get a spin-off story arc and this is a really nice one. I especially love it when a couple are forced to work out some issues between them thanks to outside forced and if you enjoy those stories too you'll likely find this a nice read. While it's not a meaty story it was a nice diversion and I loved seeing Casey and April outside of New York.

Review: Daughters unto Devils by Amy Lukavics

Daughters unto Devils by Amy Lukavics
Notes: Review copy received via Amazon Vine program.
Young Adult, Horror, Historical
Ebook/Print/Audio (240 pages, HARLEQUIN TEEN)
When sixteen-year-old Amanda Verner's family decides to move from their small mountain cabin to the vast prairie, she hopes it is her chance for a fresh start. She can leave behind the memory of the past winter; of her sickly ma giving birth to a baby sister who cries endlessly; of the terrifying visions she saw as her sanity began to slip, the victim of cabin fever; and most of all, the memories of the boy she has been secretly meeting with as a distraction from her pain. The boy whose baby she now carries.
When the Verners arrive at their new home, a large cabin abandoned by its previous owners, they discover the inside covered in blood. And as the days pass, it is obvious to Amanda that something isn't right on the prairie. She's heard stories of lands being tainted by evil, of men losing their minds and killing their families, and there is something strange about the doctor and his son who live in the woods on the edge of the prairie. But with the guilt and shame of her sins weighing on her, Amanda can't be sure if the true evil lies in the land, or deep within her soul.

Recommended for fans of Delilah S. Dawson or Daniel Marks (4 stars)

I'm always on the lookout for something weird and moody that will make my skin crawl. But I'm not big on gore for the sake of gore so sometimes it's hard to find a great YA novel that meets that need. A great one I've read in the past year was Delilah S. Dawson's Servants of the Storm. Though very different from SotS, Daughters Unto Devils falls into that same creepy, moody category and I found it very enjoyable.

I rarely sit down and read a book in one sitting but I did with this one. It's very engrossing and intense, there's always something looming, something foreboding threatening to consume Amanda and her family. It does unfortunately stray into the gory territory a time or two and the pacing can be yawn-inducing at times but overall I found it just the sort of read I was in the mood for.

I will note that I felt it was quite firmly upper YA. I tend to not comment on sex in YA because I don't think it's a big deal but between the sexual content and the violence, I felt like this one was just mature enough it might be too frightening and explicit for younger YA readers. I know it would have given me nightmares at 12-13. While I think kids should read what they want I also think many parents want to know if there's a situation like this so take it as what you will.

Richly morbid, delightfully dark and with a really terrifying ending that will leave you breathless this is one spooky read I will heartily recommend.

Weekend Reading [11/25-11/29] :: SciFi Fandoms & The Season

I'm pretty sure my kindergartner is trying to kill me. If you've ever had a kid in school you know what I mean when I say they bring home everything. Every cold, every flu, every bacterial infection, every virus. If you're lucky you don't get the pink eye, impetigo, and head lice. We've pretty much spent the entire month of November passing colds and crud from person to person. Knock on wood because only the Punk got the puke-thing... but twice.

I decided to post Weekend Reading today instead of Friday because of the holiday. I'm feeling a bit melancholy about the holiday season in spite of looking forward to it. I just get lonesome for MY extended family. Complicated relationships be damned, I love my parents, my grandmothers, my uncles, aunts, cousins, and assorted collection of kin-by-friendship members of my family anyway. It's been a bad year for everyone and I just want to hug them all and share a feast and watch movies and play games. Alas, distance kills it for another year. Whom do you get to spend holidays with?

This weekend I am all about dragging the holiday decoration boxes out so I can decorate. Y'all know Christmas isn't usually my holiday but I'm kinda feelin' it this year. I guess maybe some of the awful shit going on in the world just makes me want to bury myself in traditions and things that are good in life. Like special dinners and having pretty decorations out, being reminded of how fortunate I am and sharing that fortune with others, date nights and shopping dates. I think this has been just a hard year in general and therefore I need celebration of how much I've overcome and rebuilt. What holiday tradition are you looking forward to this year?

My eldest turned 16 this week and I was so not ready. Where did those years go? Seriously, it feels like he was just a baby. I brought him home on Thanksgiving day all those years ago and sometimes I marvel that we both survived those first few months. It's an amazing thing to have little versions of yourself turn into grown versions that develop independence. They aren't kidding when they tell you to enjoy them while they are so small and precious because it goes by fast. It really, really has.

This weekend I'm working on Atrophy by Jess Anastasi. Atrophy is very Firefly-ish so I think a lot of people who don't tend to read SFR will love it. It comes out on December 7th and I'm hoping to do something fun to celebrate so be on the lookout. I'm also reading The Perfect Weapon by Delilah S. Dawson because a) it's Delilah-freaking-S. Dawson who is amazeballs and b) it's a Star Wars short story and I am getting so anxious for The Force Awakens it's not even funny. So yeah, a very scifi weekend for me. lol

Now, before I bore you any further... how are all of you? Good I hope. It's always so quiet here and I know that's because I don't have time to drop in every day anymore. I hope you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving if you're stateside and if not may your weekend be just as safe and happy. Leave me a comment telling me what you're reading this weekend if you have a minute, I'm really curious what everyone has in the works. -- Rhi

Grab Obsidian (Lux #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout and Gravity (The Taking #1) by Melissa West for FREE until November 29th!

Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring...until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don't kill him first, that is.
Grab Obsidian (Lux #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout and Gravity (The Taking #1) by Melissa West for FREE until November 29th!

In the future, only one rule will matter: Don't. Ever. Peek. Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed -- arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die. Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she's been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she's falling for him. But Ari isn't just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She's a military legacy who's been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know--especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

Blurb

Let the battle of the sexes begin…

He’s hot, wild, unpredictable, untamable, and her best friend’s older brother.

Colton Brody is everything a good girl like Phoebe Page should avoid. But since her sister Kelly’s death, Phoebe isn’t as worried about being good as she used to be. She wants to live big with no regrets, the way Kelly did, and she intends to start with having a top secret, super steamy, no-strings-attached holiday fling with the man she’s crushed on her entire life.

What could go wrong?

Except everything?

Wounded in action and discharged without a chance to prove himself, all Colton cares about is getting back into the Marine Corps where he belongs. He will not get sucked into small town drama, will not take that promotion at the firehouse, and certainly won’t fall in love with his little sister’s best friend. He’s down for friends-with-benefits, nothing more, and plans to leave town long before quirky, bossy, cute-as-a-button Phoebe can get under his skin.

He is in control.

At least until a certain sexy brunette turns his world upside down.

It isn’t long before Colton finds himself buying flowers, talking feelings, and wishing Phoebe wanted more than another night of hot, no-holds-barred sex. Because when he’s with Phoebe even hot and dirty feels like making love.

Now Colton will have to decide what’s worth fighting for—the dreams a plane crash stole from him or the dream he’s holding in his arms.

WARNING: Good Girl vs. Bad Boy contains a mix of heart-warming romance, quirky characters, laugh out loud moments, and blisteringly hot banging. If you don’t like hot sex, laughter, mentions of humping unicorns, turkey bowling, off-beat town rituals, or graphic descriptions of artisanal pancakes, steer clear.

Spotlight: Hillary Rodham Clinton Presidential Playset from Quirk Books

Whether you love her or hate her, you'll find this Hillary Clinton Presidential Playset a delightful amusement. I happened to have made the mistake not hiding it from my 6 year old and thus she HAD to have it. Which actually managed to work in my favor—aside from winding up with all but two of my photos too blurry to use since she was moving so much—because she absolutely loved it.

An adult will find the humor of the set a fun diversion but in the hands of a child it will get downright hysterical. My daughter doesn't really understand who most of the people within the set are yet but she is obsessed with Amelia Earhart so she was very excited that she was one of the White House ghosts.

We spent an afternoon at the kitchen table talking about where the White House is, what each room is for and who the various characters were. How some of the people had lived a very long time ago while others are alive now. And, of course, the basics of how someone gets to be president and how there hasn't been a woman president yet. We also talked about why women like Hillary and Oprah and RBG are important figures in women's equality. Even still, she wound up electing Bono as president and kicked everyone else save for "Ellie the Eagle" and Agent Grant out of the White House. Then she put the Beelzebub mask on Hillary and had her come trick or treat the White House. If that isn't a metaphor for American politics I don't know what is. lol

At the very least it's a great way to get a conversation going with a child about the upcoming election and where you stand on various issues and why. Another fantastic playset from Quirk Books that would make a great (or terrible, if you're feeling antagonistic) gift.

Hillary Rodham Clinton Presidential Playset: Includes Ten Paper Dolls, Three Rooms of Fun, Fashion Accessories, and More!
Notes: I received the above product for free in exchange for an honest review and feature.
Papercraft, Politics, Humor
Print (12 pages, QUIRK BOOKS)
It may not be an election year, but you can cast your vote early with the Hillary Rodham Clinton Presidential Playset! This fold-out book features replicas of the Oval Office and other White House locations, plus perforated paper dolls of Hillary Clinton and all of her political pals and adversaries. Be HRC’s chief of staff as she takes questions at the press podium, hashes out tough negotiations in the Situation Room, or even consults with the ghost of Abe Lincoln. Complete with a pop-up cast of characters and accouterments (Bill comes with a lawn mower to keep him busy), this fun and feminist-friendly playset is perfect for Hillary fans young and old.

Review: Menagerie by Rachel Vincent

Menagerie by Rachel Vincent
Notes: Review copy received via Amazon Vine in exchange for an honest review.
Magical Realism, Alternate History, Paranormal, Mythology
Ebook/Print/Audio (432 pages, MIRA)
When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.
But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.
Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.

A mature read from a favorite author. (4 stars)

Even though I consider Rachel Vincent to be one of my auto-buy authors it's been quite a while since I read one of her books. I hadn't even read the blurb when I picked this up to read and it was really, really enjoyable. It took a little while to hit its stride, the first section was pretty slow, but once it gets going it's a hard book to put down. While I saw one of the big secrets coming from a mile away, I don't think readers who don't read a lot of urban fantasy are likely to find it as glaringly obvious.

There's a maturity to Vincent's writing in Menagerie that makes it almost good enough to lure lit readers into the genre fiction shelves. What wound up keeping me from being able to rate it with five stars was the really open ending. Some readers love them, even I do most of the time, but this story felt like it had just started. Definitely still worth reading, I just felt like this was a book intended to be a series that was given a non-ending-ending in case it didn't sell well.

If you're in the mood for a dark urban fantasy featuring cryptids that's reminiscent of the Rachel Morgan series in many ways I think you'll really enjoy it. I much recommend it!

When she's not writing, Jessie enjoys playing her dulcimer (badly), sewing the worlds ugliest quilts to give to her friends, going for bike rides with her house full of boys, and drifting in and out on the waves, feeling thankful for sun, surf, and lovely people to share them with.

Synopsis:

Warning: This is a dark enemies-to-lovers romance that contains violence, a damaged alpha male, and dirty twisted hate banging. Read at your own risk.

The first time CIA Agent Clay Hart fell for Harley Mason, she nearly killed him. But she won't get another chance at his heart or his life. He's going to take the son she's hidden from him for years, send her to jail where she belongs, and never look back. Harley isn't the sick twisted person she used to be, but sins have a long half-life and rage an even longer reach. Now the only man she's ever loved is back from the dead and determined to take away her reason for living. But she won't give up her son without one hell of a dirty, twisted, sexy fight. She won't give up. He won't give in. And neither of them is prepared for the sparks that fly between them or the shared enemy determined to destroy them both.
