"I  wish I could have read about a protagonist like Beth when I was growing up--a girl who doesn't fit into her society and must learn to use her abilities for good instead of evil. Her struggles will resonate with teen readers, and the hidden agendas of the school and its students will keep readers guessing up to the final page." - Lyn Miller-Lachmann, author of Rogue

"This unique and compelling novel grabbed me on the first page and wouldn't let go. With unforgettable characters and a story that is by turns heartbreaking, thrilling and uplifting, UNTIL BETH is a must-read.” - Christine Johnson, author of The Gathering Dark

EARTHQUAKE
Earthbound #2
Released: July 8th 2014

Tavia Michaels has discovered that she’s an Earthbound—a fallen goddess with the power to remake the Earth—and that a rival faction of Earthbounds, the Reduciata, has created a virus that is literally wiping swaths of the planet out of existence.

Tavia is captured and imprisoned before she can act on this information, along with her eternal lover, Logan. Huddled in a claustrophobic cell, they lose track of the days, their attempts to escape proving as ephemeral as Tavia’s newly gestating powers. But then Tavia and Logan are mysteriously rescued. . . .

They’re brought to the underground headquarters of the Curatoria, another group of Earthbounds that Tavia doesn’t fully trust. There, she’s told that she can save the Earth before it disappears. She agrees.

Tavia quickly realizes that she isn’t like other Earthbound, and as her abilities continue to awaken, they begin to threaten her centuries-long relationship with Logan. When Benson—Tavia’s former best friend and romantic interest—appears at Curatoria headquarters, Tavia will again have to make a choice about who to be with even as she tries to stop the virus that is destroying the world and uncover the truth about the two Earthbound organizations that have her tangled up in their webs.

EARTHBOUND
Earthbound #1
Release Date July 30th 2013
Tavia Michaels is the sole survivor of the plane crash that killed her parents. When she starts to see strange visions of a boy she’s never spoken with in real life, she begins to suspect that there’s much about her past that she isn’t being told.

Tavia immediately searches for answers, desperate to determine why she feels so drawn to a boy she hardly knows. But when Tavia discovers that the aunt and uncle who took her in after her parents' death may have actually been responsible for the plane crash that killed them - and that she may have been the true intended victim - she flees for the safety of Camden, Maine, where the boy she sees in her visions instructs her to go.

Now, Tavia is on the run with no one to trust. No one, that is, except for her best friend and longtime crush, Benson.

Tavia feels torn between the boy who mysteriously comes to her at night and the boy who has been by her side every step of the way. But what Tavia doesn't know is that the world is literally falling apart and that to save it she will have to unite with the boy in her visions. Only problem? To do so would mean rejecting Benson's love. And that's the one thing Tavia Michaels swore she'd never do.

3rd Quarter Update: 2015 Audiobook Challenge || RhiReading Goals

3rd Quarter Update

Please drop by the The Book Nympho or Hot Listens, for the full challenge details!

In 2014 I hit my goal with 12 audio reads so for 2015 I decided to step it up hardcore going with the 30-50 level, MY PRECIOUS. To help me keep track and make it pretty I made a Pinterest board where I can pin my reads as I finish them.

Follow Rhianna's board 2015 Audiobook Challenge on Pinterest.

Wow. I've been doing really poorly. Only 13 finished. Hitting my goal for the year is completely impossible at this point unless I listen day and night lol. Some of that is because I got a job and part of that has been that I've been reading so much print which is unusual as I tend to stick with ereading and audio.

I'm currently in the middle of several audiobooks:

  1. Nowhere but Here by Katie McGarry -- hate the female narrator but good book.
  2. Even White Trash Zombies Get the Blues by Diana Rowland -- this is how I treat myself when I've been getting my shit together, love this series!
  3. Daughter of the Forest: Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier -- a long one that I am liking but can only tolerate in small doses.
  4. Blood and Mistletoe by E. J. Stevens -- just started, planning to listen and review the whole series.

Weekend Reading [09/25-09/27] :: 7 Years & a Wedding

Weekend Time!

I'm having a weird week. Nothing ruins your Wednesday like thinking it's Thursday until lunch time. And nothing kills your vibe like everyone being sick and trying to juggle rescheduling a bunch of appointments and stuff. But I'm in a mostly good mood because I'm getting better at my job and feeling like I'm finally getting a routine that works for me going. Working from home can be weird... it's way easy to get side tracked and wind up doing dishes instead of answering email if you're dreading writing a response. Next thing you know you're eating a bowl of cereal and talking to your cat instead of researching market trends. lol

As usual I'm juggling way too many books this weekend. I finally started DRAGONS WILL FALL and it's different than her work as Susannah Scott in a way I wasn't anticipating, but I'm reserving judgement until I finish it.  Y'all know I enjoyed Paula Altenburg's demon series so, of course, I was already likely to read PALE MOON WALKING. But I'm a publicist for it so I've been slowly working on it. Isn't its cover redonks pretty? I love the blend of wild west and scifi romance so much.

Tomorrow my friends are getting married! Congrats R & B! I'll be offline most of the day and probably busy helping with prep tonight instead of reading. But my hope is to also finally get to start another title I'm a publicist for, HARVEST MOON! Could I be any luckier than to get to promote two of my favorite authors releasing on Monday?

Now that I'm finding my groove with work I'm trying to get some more blog tours stopping by RhiReading. Can you believe it's turning 7 on Thursday!?! I keep forgetting. Every year I forget until the last minute. I might have to figure out a little giveaway to celebrate next weekend. To give me an idea of what to giveaway would y'all please tell me if you're US or International when you comment with what you're reading this weekend?

Well, I better get going or I'm not going to get time for dinner before I go help with setting up tables and chairs and all that good stuff. Thanks for continuing to be such devoted fans. ♥ -- Rhi

Amazon eBook ** Amazon Paperback

Excerpt:

Hard As Steel - RDL Teaser 1I’m thrilled to be here celebrating the release of my 21st book, HARD AS STEEL! After a midnight break-in at her apartment, close friends and Hard Ink Tattoo co-workers Ike Young and Jessica Jakes are forced into hiding—and forced to confront the feelings they’ve always denied for one another. I have always adored friends-to-lovers and forced proximity stories, and HARD AS STEEL delivers that and more, including a taste of both my award-winning and best-selling Hard Ink and upcoming Raven Riders series! Check out this excerpt:

They stared at each for a long moment. Jess went from feeling amused to awkward to observed…and that made her hot. Especially as she was standing there in nothing but a towel.

As if he could hear her thoughts, Ike’s gaze slowly ran down her neck to her chest. She wiped at something there and the wetness on the fingers told her it had been a droplet of water from her hair. Ike watched the movement of her hand openly, hungrily, and his desire made her bold, daring, hungry in return.

Without giving herself time to second guess the idea, she reached out and lightly dragged her wet fingers against his bottom lip.

And it was like she’d unleashed a beast.

Ike grabbed her wrist and hauled her to him. He was on her everywhere. His hands in her hair, on her back, grabbing her ass and lifting her up. His tongue licked the exact route that water droplet had taken, from chest to neck to ear. And then he was kissing her, fucking her mouth with his tongue, absolutely devouring her.

Jess held on like her life depended on it, and at some point she became aware of the breeze on her bare skin. She’d dropped the towel, which meant she was totally buck-ass naked in Ike’s big arms, and she couldn’t have cared less.

Hard As Steel RDL Teaser 2
Ike licked her mouth, sucked her tongue, nipped at her lips. He turned and made for the stairs, and Jess thought she might die from sheer joy and anticipation. He tasted like strength and sin and sex, and she tightened her legs around his hips as he carried her to the loft, eager to see if all of him tasted so good—or even better.

When they reached the second floor, Ike growled low in his throat and his grip tightened on her on her ass, his fingers digging in. She moaned and—

Cool air from the ceiling fan washed over Jess as Ike dropped her onto the bed—and promptly turned around to leave. Jess was so stunned she couldn’t speak. Just as he hit the top of the steps, he said, “Don’t fucking tease me, Jessica. I’m trying to do right by you, but I’m still just a goddamned man.”

About HARD AS STEEL: A Hard Ink/Raven Riders Crossover Novella

After identifying her employer's dangerous enemies, Jessica Jakes takes refuge at the compound of the Raven Riders Motorcycle Club. Fellow Hard Ink tattooist and Raven leader Ike Young promises to keep Jess safe for as long as it takes, which would be perfect if his close, personal, round-the-clock protection didn't make it so hard to hide just how much she wants him—and always has.
Ike Young loved and lost a woman in trouble once before. The last thing he needs is alone time with the sexiest and feistiest woman he's ever known, one he's purposely kept at a distance for years. Now, Ike's not sure he can keep his hands or his heart to himself—or that he even wants to anymore. And that means he has to do whatever it takes to hold on to Jess forever.

Review: Dumplin' by Julie Murphy

Dumplin' by Julie Murphy
Notes: ARC received via Amazon Vine Program.
Young Adult, Contemporary, Social Issues
Ebook/Print/Audio (384 pages, BLAZER + BRAY)
Dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom, Willowdean has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American-beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.
Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Teen Blue Bonnet Pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.
Author Site: website

"But can't I be both at the same time?" (4 stars)

With all the early buzz about DUMPLIN' I couldn't help but feel compelled to give it a shot. I've always loved novels where someone who isn't the usual Mary Sue gets to take center stage but Murphy takes it just a step further and produces Willowdean Dickson, one of the most real characters I've had the pleasure of reading in a while. Rather than make the fat girl have a personality without flaws that makes her adventure a matter of size, Murphy created a girl so real and true to life it sometimes hurt.

While at times I felt like the story tried to be too many things and jumped all over from themes of romance and friendship and familiar pressure and more, it was still engrossing. Two things killed my ability to rate it just a little bit higher though. The first was that it ended in a way that wasn't satisfying. I know some will be just fine with it but the word abrupt seems fitting to describe it and if those kind of endings bug you as much as they do myself you might find yourself disappointed. The second was that because of the way it ended a lot of parts of the storyline felt unresolved, actually the more I ponder it the more I think there wasn't really any resolution to anything.

My grievances aside, there were so many wonderful characters and thoughts from Will within the book. Social issues of many flavors drop up and provoke thought and stimulate emotion. I personally felt grief for Will's aunt Lucy right alongside her. But other issues of class and status, culture and religion, sexuality and ability peppered DUMPLIN' with things I think are universally relatable.

If you're looking for an excellent read for a book club that is sure to incite great conversations I very much recommend DUMPLIN'. One of the themes that overall will resonate with most young adult readers and adults alike though, is that we're all many things and sometimes things that seem opposite can be a part of us at the same time. You can be fat and beautiful, bold and insecure, love someone and not be in love with them. Even if you don't wind up loving DUMPLIN', you're sure to come away feeling as if you've had a heartfelt glimpse inside a character who is flawed and perfect all at the same time.

Weekend Reading [09/18-09/20] :: Planning for RT & Scifi/Fantasy Romances

The weekend—OMG IT'S FINALLY HERE! Yaaaaas!

If only I didn't have a million things to do, darnit. I have a book I am dying to read sitting here waiting for me. Have you seen Dragons Will Fall: Kingdom Come by Susan Scott yet? I loved her work as Susannah Scott as you probably know, but this series is a fantasy romance series. Awww yeah, total excite. In fact, I might just jump off of the computer straight into it. I have spent a lot of my week working on for work reading. I deserve some just for fun reading right?

That said, I love my work reading too. I started on Under His Skin by Stacey O'Neale a bit late but I think Covet readers are going to find this one really enjoyable. I saw a reviewer say it was like a grown up version of Jennifer L. Armentrout's LUX series. I think that's a good reason to give it a read. But I'm curious, do y'all like aliens in your romances? I'm admittedly a scifi junkie so the more the better for me, but not everyone seems to love them.

In other news, Monday is registration for the RT Booklovers Convention for 2016. I've wanted to go for years but firstly have never had the money and second, never really had a reason to justify going as just a blogger. But now I can go as an industry professional which is really cool. Which means I've been planning my trip and trying to find roomies for the 8 days I'll be in Vegas. I actually haven't flown in more than 10 years so it's kinda weird to think about being in a plane again, makes me extra nervous. But at the same time I am getting sooo excited.

So many of my favorite authors and friends are going. I'm actually getting a nervous pit in my tummy just thinking about trying to talk to some of these people, they are my rock stars. Are you planning on going? I'd love to meet some of my blog fans. Let me know eh?

Speaking of letting me know things, what are y'all reading this weekend? I've been feeling so out of the loop I have no idea what anyone has in their TBR pile. Have a wonderful weekend guys! -- Rhi

Review: Vengeance Road by Erin Bowen

Vengeance Road by Erin Bowen
Notes: ARC received via Amazon Vine.
Young Adult, Historical, Western, Romance
Ebook/Print (336 pages, MHM BOOKS)
When Kate Thompson’s father is killed by the notorious Rose Riders for a mysterious journal that reveals the secret location of a gold mine, the eighteen-year-old disguises herself as a boy and takes to the gritty plains looking for answers and justice. What she finds are devious strangers, dust storms, and a pair of brothers who refuse to quit riding in her shadow. But as Kate gets closer to the secrets about her family, she gets closer to the truth about herself and must decide if there's room for love in a heart so full of hate.
In the spirit of True Grit, the cutthroat days of the Wild West come to life for a new generation. Author Site: website

Squandered Potential (3 stars)

I'm going to blame the phenomenal graphic novel PRETTY DEADLY for giving me really high expectations when I pick up a western read with a female protagonist. Or maybe I'll blame the cover artist who made VENGEANCE ROAD so dang pretty that I expected too much from it. Either way it was one of those books that started out promising but wound up dragging for chapter after chapter and then gave one way-too-obvious clue as to the climax.

My overall disappointment with the story aside, it wasn't bad just not quite as exciting and mysterious as I had anticipated. I love stories where a young woman disguises herself and has a great adventure and Kate was pretty awesome. The Colton brothers were an enjoyable contrast to one another and the way they interacted with Kate both before and after she gets revealed. Not everyone will love the way the writing is done but I love a first person novel that has an accent or dialect that gives it a voice. Additionally, there's an enjoyable set of author's notes about what inspired VR and how she researched the setting and era that I loved.

While I found VR wasn't what I thought it had the potential to be I'd still recommend it. As long as you don't go in expecting lots of horseback chases and shoot-outs, and a somewhat lighter western than the True Grit comparison implies I think you'll find it enjoyable. Especially if you like seeing a young woman on the path to revenge.

Exclusive Excerpt:
A screech echoes through the woods. The sound is like a nail scraped against tin and raises the tiny hairs on the back of my neck. It’s the unmistakable caw of a crow. Spinning, I search the dimness for the source. Before my eyes can focus, a glossy black shadow bursts through a sheet of Spanish moss draped on a nearby live oak.Shrieking, I cover my head with my hands and duck, then dart toward the path that brought me here. The bird pursues, flapping its large wings and gaining ground fast. With a whoosh, it swoops from the sky and slams into me, sinking its talons into my arm. I scream, then thrash around, trying to knock it loose. Its spiky nails clamp deeper into my flesh.“Get off her!” Cooper’s voice booms.Tears, the very best kind, surge. I’ve never been so happy to have him near. “Help!” I lamely shake my arm again, but the psychotic bird hangs on.Cooper’s feet pound against the dirt as he races toward me and my winged assailant. As he draws close, the crow squawks, then jams its beak into my scalp, yanking out a clump of hair.Pain, brilliant yellow and blinding, flashes across my vision. I wail, overcome.“Emma, duck.”I drop to my knees. Something hard thumps against the bird, launching it into the air like a golf ball from a tee. Its piercing caw bounces across the clearing. As the bird soars into the moonlit sky, it attempts to beat its wings, but something’s wrong. Only one of its feathered sides extends. Midair the shiny black crow stalls then careens back toward the earth. Just as I’m sure it’s headed straight for us, the lame wing unfolds then beats furiously to avoid what is sure to be a deadly collision. Veering off, it follows a wobbly flight path toward the shadowy forest.Cooper tosses a long, heavy stick onto the ground, then reaches for my hand and pulls me to my feet. “Are you okay?” His wide hands clutch my arms as his eyes search mine.“I—I think so.” My voice shakes as I work to process all that’s happened in the last few minutes. My temperature drops as shock sets in. Was it real, or just an immensely screwed-up dream? One glance at the slick streak of blood dripping down my skin confirms my new wound, though I can’t tell how bad it is until I see it in the light.Grabbing me close, he wraps his strong arms around my back. The heady scent of his Cooperness swirls around me, filling me with familiar warmth that heads off my shock. My thoughts zoom to the red stain that has likely already smeared his polo. “I’m bleeding.” I try to pull away.“I know.” He grips me close, like he’s fallen from a ship and I’m the only life preserver.“But it’ll get it on your shirt.” A tear streams down the side of my face.He pulls away, just enough to meet my gaze. “Who cares about my shirt? I thought I lost you, Emmaline.” Brushing his thumb against my cheek, he wipes away the salty liquid.“But you didn’t. You saved me.”“I was almost too late.” His voice is breathy and so full of despair it nearly breaks my heart.
