Review: Beauties from Rosy Press

Writer: Marguerite Bennett | Illustrator: Trungles | Letterer: Rachel Deering
Fairytale Retelling, Comic, Fantasy
Digital (23 pages, Rosy Press)
Enter a beautiful fantasy kingdom with writer Marguerite Bennett, artist Trungles, and letterer Rachel Deering! A young woman and her lover risk everything to be together. Readers will find a very different retelling of the classic fairy tale, although this version has many beasts and a few beauties!

A lush, poetic must-read retelling! (5 stars)

If you've been following RhiReading since its inception you've probably noticed how fairy tale obsessed I am. I'm honestly not sure where my interest in them began but I have a very vivid memory of listening to a vinyl record of Beauty and the Beast over and over as a little girl. My interest has persisted for as long as I can recall and variations on the Beauty and the Beast theme continue to be one of my favorites.

Having backed Fresh Romance from Rosy Press on Kickstarter earlier this year I have been continually impressed with the work they put together so I was very excited to pick up my copy of BEAUTIES today. I had seen the gorgeous preview pages at Comic Book Resources yesterday so I was certain it would be worth every penny and I can happily report that it is.

I'm almost embarrassed to report that I devoured this in one sitting then immediately wanted to go tag a couple of my author friends whom I know would love it too. The illustrations are so bright and vivid, so elegant and expressive that I just want to stare at them for hours. The lettering is never distracting and has a delicate flow that very much suits that style of the art. But the writing is what really got me. It's poetic and luminous in a way that I've never seen in a comic. I want to read it aloud to myself.

While it feels as if this is a finished tale, I hope that there will be more Beauties comics in the near future. I highly recommend this to fairy tale retelling fans and in particular women with a desire to read more comics that just can't get into superheroes or the middle-grade characters that seem to be popular. Check this out if you love The Last Unicorn or Fables.

2016 Star Wars Books Reading Challenge

Like most Star Wars fans I grew up enjoying the films very much. But it wasn't until I was a teenager and borrowed my brother's copy of Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn that I became a Star Wars fanatic. What can I say? I was more of a bookworm than a film buff growing up.

Since becoming a blogger 7 years ago I've wanted to host a Star Wars reading challenge but didn't think I could get anyone to join in. But ya know what? I think a lot of my friends who love romances and science fiction and fantasy and dystopian and young adult books will find a lot of the books just as great as I have... and there are more coming out every month!

Weekend Reading [12/25 - 12/27] :: Christmas Anxiety & ARCs vs. $$$ Books

Merry Christmas dear readers! I've always been the kind of person that if someone celebrates a holiday that I do not and they wish my a good one, I feel really special. It's nice to be included in any kind of well wish, ya know? So I hope that if you are not celebrating Christmas that your day is wonderful none the less.

I'm having an alright kind of day. I always find the holiday a bit exhausting to be honest. It's an introvert's curse I think. Having to open gifts in front of people is really stressful. Worrying I'm going to ruin the pie or the potatoes or the ham or the... yeah, all the cooking makes me nervous. Not including all the cleaning and decorating both before and after. Add in that we've got a kid in the hospital and it's just been such a long week I'm ready to put my jammies back on and curl up with a book.

I did get wonderful gifts though. Lots of Captain Phasma loot. I know everyone is always talking about wanting books for Christmas but I actually prefer not to get them. I just like buying my own books. I can't be the only one right?

This weekend I'll be finishing Black Widow Forever Red by Margaret Stohl which I have to admit has been a pretty big disappointment for a lot of reasons. Not sure whether I'll review it or not but it's certainly possible. I wish I could say it was that I had high expectations of it and then it just didn't meet them but mostly it just went in a direction that really seemed silly.

After I finish it I think I will either start Wake of Vultures (The Shadow #1) by Lila Bowen or Burn by Elissa Sussman. Hmmm, read an ARC I have for review or one I paid monies for? lol Always a tough call. What are you reading this weekend? Maybe a new book you got as a gift?

Did you get any marvelous book loot for Christmas or non-book loot? Are you having a big feast or a tiny gathering of close friends and family? Whatever you're doing today and this weekend I hope it's fun. On that note I'm off to peel sweet potatoes and get a ham ready to go in the multi-cooker because for some reason I think that's the way to go this year, teehee! If you're not following me on Instagram you should do it... I'm posting a picture of my Death Star apple pie later. ☺♥ -- Rhi

P.S. -- be on the lookout this weekend... I'm putting together a Reading Challenge that I've wanted to do for years and I think it's going to have a giveaway included but here's a tiny hint:

"A funny, poetic, big-hearted reminder that life can—and will—take us all by surprise.” —Jennifer E. Smith, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight

Can the best thing happen at the worst time?

Her dad went crazy. Her mom left town. She has bills to pay and a little sister to look after. Now is not the time for level-headed seventeen-year-old Lucille to fall in love. But love—messy, inconvenient love—is what she’s about to experience when she falls for Digby Jones, her best friend’s brother. With blazing longing that builds to a fever pitch, Estelle Laure’s soulful debut will keep readers hooked and hoping until the very last page.

Exclusive Excerpt:

When Wrenny and I roll up the hill to Eden’s house in Mom’s ancient Corolla, Digby and his dad, John, are outside playing basketball, and I want to get in the house as fast as possible,
because otherwise I might be trapped here all day, staring. I get a little twinge of something seeing a dad and his kid playing ball like dads and kids are supposed to. That’s a real
thing, and my hand wants to cover Wren’s face so she can’t see all that she is missing.
Which reminds me. “Wren.”
“Yeah?” She’s wiping at her shirt, reading a book on her lap, and she’s a little bit filthy, her hair greasy and knotty in spite of my efforts this morning. At some point the braids came out, and she’s reverted to wild.
“You know how Mom hasn’t been around lately?”
She stops. Tightens. “Yeah,” she says.
“Well, we don’t want anyone to know about that, okay?
Even Janie and Eden and Digby and John.”
“But Mom’s on vacation. She’s getting her head together. She’s coming back.”
“Okay, yes,” I say, “but still. We don’t want to tell anyone, because they might not understand that. They might get the wrong idea.”
“Like that she left us permanently?” There is so much more going on inside that Wrenny-head than I can ever know.
“Maybe, or at least for longer than she was supposed to.” I reach for the handle to the door because I can’t look at her. “Someone might think that.”

Paperback Release Day: THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT by Katee Robert [Excerpt + Giveaway]

Teague O’Malley hates pretty much everything associated with his family’s name. And when his father orders him to marry Callista Sheridan to create a “business” alliance, Teague’s ready to tell his dad exactly where he can stuff his millions. But then Teague actually meets his new fiancée, sees the bruises on her neck and the fight still left in her big blue eyes, and he decides he will do everything in his power to protect her.

Everyone knows the O’Malleys have a dangerous reputation. But Callie wasn’t aware of just what that meant until she saw Teague, the embodiment of lethal grace and coiled power. His slightest touch sizzles through her. The closer they get, though, the more trouble they’re in. Because Callie’s keeping a dark secret—and what Teague doesn’t know could get him killed.

“There’s always good and bad, all mixed together.”

“Exactly.” He finally looked at her, pinning her in place with his gaze. “Though I’ll admit there’s more good to this situation than I would have expected.”

Desire rose up in a tidal wave that had shivers working their way through her body. Good lord, the man knew how to turn a conversation into something else entirely with a single look. She reached for her wine again, only to find the glass empty. Keep it together, Callie. You know how to flirt.

Yes, she did. But this wasn’t harmless flirting. Nothing about Teague was harmless. He saw too much. He was an O’Malley. And, perhaps most importantly, he was going to be her husband in a very short time.

He seemed to realize her mind was going a million miles a second, because he sat back, breaking the moment. “Now I have a question for you.”

“Yes?” She put as much nonchalance into her tone as she possibly could. The candlelight played along his cheekbones and jaw, the shadows dancing over his cheeks, following a path her fingers itched to trace. What was wrong with her? She should be focusing on what their next move was, not on how intimate it was to sit this close to him.

“Would you have actually married Brendan if someone hadn’t done you the favor of offing him?”

She looked into his dark eyes and couldn’t lie. “No.” That man was a monster. She might regret the events that had brought her to that horrible strip club and put a gun into her hands, but once she knew the truth about him, she never could have signed her life away to him. And if it took her all of a week to find out what kind of man he was, Papa should have known a long time ago. She shifted, the realization sitting like a block of concrete in her stomach. Had he known and gone forward with the engagement anyway?

2016 Audiobook Challenge || GOALS

2016 Audiobook Challenge

Please visit HOT LISTENS and THE BOOK NYMPHO for more information about the challenge but some of the important details are:
  • The goal is to find a new love for audios or to outdo yourself by listening to more audios in 2016 than you did in 2015.
  • Runs January 1, 2016 – December 31, 2016. You can join at any time.
  • ANY genres count.
  • Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are allowed.

This is my 3rd year joining the challenge. In 2015 I got a little bit overly ambitious and way over-estimated how much time I'd have to fit in audio reads. But I thought I didn't do too bad as I had still passed my previous year by a bit.

For 2016 I'm going to be a little bit more realistic in my goal and shoot for the Binge Listener (Why read when someone can do it for you) 20-30 level. It's more than I did for 2015 but not so big that if I have another difficult year in my personal or professional lives I can't possibly reach it with some solid attempting.

I found that I really liked using a Pinterest board to track my completed listens so I'm doing it again for the 2016 challenge.

Christmas Treats Giveaway Hop

Crap guys! I had a terrible week overall and I've got a kid in the hospital, so I am late getting this post finished and up. To make it up to you I'm doing a giftcard giveaway and will randomly gift two more $5 ones to people I see tagging me on social media when sharing this giveaway!

Thank you for being so supportive during this hard time. I love my wonderful followers and I'm so glad to be part of another great hop hosted by the amazing Anna.

Wrap Up: 2015 Audiobook Challenge

Wrap Up

Please drop by the The Book Nympho or Hot Listens, for the full challenge details!

In 2014 I hit my goal with 12 audio reads so for 2015 I decided to step it up hardcore going with the 30-50 level, MY PRECIOUS. To help me keep track and make it pretty I made a Pinterest board where I kept my reads as I finished them.

Follow Rhianna's board 2015 Audiobook Challenge on Pinterest.

The year just got away from me. I'm pretty disappointed in myself. I've been buying audiobooks left and right, have borrowed many from the library, a couple of which I didn't wind up enjoying and didn't finish. I only finished 3 from my must-reads list. I managed about half of what I really had hoped to hit this year so maybe I'll be a little more realistic with the challenge in 2016.

But I've learned a lot about my tastes as a listener from my experiences this year...

  • A narrator who's voice bothers me is a huge problem. It distracts me a lot.
  • I can listen at really high speeds once I'm suitably into the book but only if the narrator's voice doesn't sound really weirdly pitched.
  • Some stories work better when read than listened to and with that...
  • I can't listen to dark erotic romances, hearing certain words read by someone else makes my skin crawl. Seriously, the "C" word squicks me out as it is and it's way worse in an audiobook.
  • I can listen to audiobooks just about anywhere and while doing almost anything... as long as Mr. Rhi isn't around. He loves to tease me about the gushy romantic dialog and smutty sex scenes if he overhears them.
I'm so glad I joined the challenge, perhaps if I hadn't started working full time I might have done a little better since the Punk is in school now but overall I felt like while I didn't get the quantity I had hoped for, I listened to some really good books.

I plan to finish up a few books I've got started in the new year including:

Blog Tour: THIEF OF LIES by Brenda Drake [Excerpt]

Releases January 5th

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world's most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik's world and her own, before both are destroyed.

I pressed the screen, and it went dark. “How do we know he’s not being forced to say this?”

“The password, May Agnes guide you,” Lei replied. “She’s the patron saint of Asile.”

Agnes? That was the silver woman’s name that formed from my globe. Did the saints have something to do with the Chiavi?

I faced Ricardo. “How did you know I was here?”

“The werehounds tracked your scent from a shirt Katy…excuse me, your nana…gave us.”

“Can your pack help us save Couve?” Arik asked him.

“They will, but Gia must go with me.” He noticed the protest forming on my lips. “Merlin said no exceptions. I’m to get you to the shelter.”

From the corridor came yells, scuffles, and the continual wail of the warning siren.

“I can’t go with you,” I said. “I have to fight with them.”

“She can’t fight with us,” Lei said, glancing at the door. “She almost killed Kale.”

I turned to Sinead. “You know what I can do.”

While he may look like the love child of a movie starlet and an NFL linebacker, Ben Langley has the people skills of a half-drowned porcupine. Why socialize when there are chemistry labs and bad sci-fi flicks? If he has any hope of taking the helm as CEO of the family business, Ben needs an image makeover. Pronto.

Enter Holly Colvin, owner of First Impressions public relations and branding firm, and the woman who just saved Ben from the clutches of an over-attentive sales clerk. Holly’s rebranded hundreds of companies in her career, but she’s never rebranded a person. The guy clearly needs help, though, and she’s just the woman for the job.

With the clock ticking for them both, Holly and Ben face off over wardrobe malfunctions and business jargon that sounds a lot sexier than it should. But can Holly make Ben into the man he thinks he should be without losing the man she’s starting to love?

“Uh, Holly?”

The sound of Ben’s voice from the dressing room stall jarred her from her incessant planning.

“I’m having a bit of a problem here.”

“What sort of problem?” She stood up, ready to help. “What’s wrong?”

“There’s a thread or something caught in the zipper. I can’t get the pants off.”

She hesitated, resting a hand on the wall of the dressing room. “Do you want me to help?”

“You know, this really isn’t how I envisioned you offering to remove my pants.”

She felt the heat creeping into her cheeks again, torn between the embarrassment of the situation and the thrill of knowing he’d basically just admitted he’d thought about her taking off his pants.

It was a joke. Don’t get too excited.

“Should I go find Marcus?”

“Who’s Marcus?”

“The clerk. That’s what his nametag said, anyway.”

“I should pay more attention to stuff like that.”

“There’s your first lesson in public relations—always look for nametags.” She lowered her voice a little and glanced toward the door. “And based on the attention Marcus was paying to you, I get the sense he wouldn’t mind taking off your pants. What is it with you and sales clerks?”

Ben muttered something unintelligible that was probably some sort of engineering curse. “I’m about five seconds from whipping out my pocket knife and cutting the damn things off my body.”

“Don’t do that! They’re the only pair in your size and they don’t even need to be tailored.”

“I’ve been at this for ten minutes already.”

“Are you sure you’re sliding it the right way?”

“I have a doctorate in engineering,” he muttered. “I’m pretty sure I understand how a zipper works.”

She hesitated at the edge of the dressing room, biting her lip. “Do you want me to try?”
