Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Katie Ashley revs up the danger and sexual tension in her brand-new Vicious Cycle romance series.

Deacon Malloy’s life is dedicated to the Hells Raiders motorcycle club. Tough, hard, and fast with his fists, he serves the group as sergeant at arms. But his devil-may-care approach to life is thrown for a loop when the five-year-old daughter he never knew existed lands on the club steps.

Alexandra Evans is devoted to all her students—but there’s always been something about Willow Malloy that tugs at her heart. There’s an aura of sadness about her, a girl in need of all the love Alexandra can give. When Willow stops coming to school, Alexandra’s search leads to a clubhouse full of bikers…and a father hell-bent on keeping his daughter always within sight.

The moment Deacon sees Alexandra, he has to have her in his bed—and he’s never met a woman yet who couldn’t be persuaded. No matter how attracted she is to Deacon, Alexandra refuses to be just another conquest. But it’s Deacon himself who could be seduced—into a brighter future for himself, his daughter, and the woman he’s falling for against all odds.

Excerpt

As I entered the door, I took a deep breath to try and still my out-of-control nerves. Smoke hung heavy in the air, stinging my eyes and causing me to cough. Several men in leather biker cuts lounged on stools at the bar, nursing beers. Across from me, a heated pool game was taking place.
I took a few steps inside and then froze. “Are you lost, darlin’?” a big busted woman in a halter top asked.
“Uh…I’m looking for David Malloy,” I said.
Two men at the pool table whirled around. The shorter of the two, a tough but cute looking blond, cocked his head curiously at me. But then the moment my gaze locked on the other man, I knew he was Willow’s father. They had the same dark hair, soulful dark eyes, and heart-shaped face. David, however, had dark scruff covering his face. Although he was Rev’s brother, I didn’t see any resemblance between the two. Although he was shorter and slightly less built, David was just as good-looking as Rev. “Mr. Malloy?” I questioned, as I closed the distance between us.
He tossed the pool stick on the table. Taking a long drag on his cigarette, he then stubbed it out in an ashtray on the table. “What do you want?” he demanded.
Without even glancing around the room, I knew that every eye in the place was on us. “I really need to speak with you for a moment.”
His dark eyes narrowed as they raked over my body. Then the next thing I knew, he leapt at me, knocking me back into the wall. One of his hands came to grip my throat while his body pinned me in place. Fear like I had never known overwhelmed me, sending my heartbeat drumming wildly in my ears. It was so loud it felt like a cannon blast going off around me. “Please,” I murmured.
David glared at me as his thumb pressed harder into my throat. “They’re really falling down on their job at the academy.”
“E-Excuse m-me?” I stammered.
With a smirk, he replied, “Don’t they train you ATF bitches to hide your fear a little better? I mean, you’re practically pissing your pants right now, not to mention your heart is beating ninety to nothing.”
I shook my head slowly back and forth as I tried processing his words. “ATF? I don’t understand.”
He rolled his eyes. “A white-bred piece of ass comes waltzing into my clubhouse wanting to talk to me alone. It doesn’t take a fucking genius to realize you’re a Fed.”
A Fed? It took me a moment to process what he meant. Holy shit, he thought I worked for the government as an agent of some sort. Quickly, I replied, “No, I’m not.”
A voice came from him. “Deacon, man, you’re gonna get your ass jacked up even further for this.”
Glancing over his shoulder, Deacon said to the young, blond haired man, “Stay out of this, Bishop.”
Bishop held up his hands. “Fine. It’s your fucking funeral.”
David’s hand slid down my throat to the buttons on my dress. Glancing over his shoulder at the others, he questioned, “What do you bet she’s wired up under her tits?”
When his hands started to rip open my dress, I couldn’t hold back my scream. “No, stop! I’m not who you think I am. I swear!” I protested.
“Then just who the hell are you?” he demanded.
Before I could answer, a tiny voice came from behind us. “Miss Alex?”
The sound of Willow’s voice caused David to release his hold on my dress, but his body still kept me pinned to the wall. At that same moment, Rev entered the clubhouse. When he saw me, his eyes bulged, and he broke into a run to reach us. Grabbing David’s shoulders, he slung him away from me. “For fuck’s sake, Deacon, what the hell are you doing?”
“I’m giving this undercover ATF bitch what she deserves,” Deacon spat, taking a step back toward me.
“Christ, she’s not ATF,” Rev countered.
“Oh, then who the hell is she?”
“She’s my teacher…and my friend,” Willow answered in a small voice.

Weekend Reading [05/29-05/31] :: I saw Lindsey Stirling live! *fangirling*

It's the weekend. I'm alive. What more do you want from me? :P

So last weekend was pretty awesome. We packed up our teenager and drove the nearly 4 hours through the mountains and cattle country to Missoula. It rained and rained and rained right until we were almost there. I couldn't read because I get car sick so I was so glad to finally get to the hotel. We got checked in and relaxed a little before heading to this kickass Irish pub right by our hotel where I had what very well might be the best meal I've ever had. Then it was time to head to the Big Sky Brewing Company to see Lindsey Stirling!

Alas, we had dawdled too long and wound up stuck in the back and couldn't really see her well at all. But she sounded amazing and I'm really glad we splurged and went because it was a good show and she seems like the coolest artist ever. That she talked about her struggle with depression made me cry because I'm a big weirdo and having suffered through depression, anorexia, and now an anxiety disorder I got where she was coming from. Anyway, if you get the chance to see her DO IT.

I tried to read a bit and slept terribly then the next day was more driving back home. My legs hurt for 3 days from standing for 5 straight hours on the hard ground. I feel like such an old fart saying that. lol

Didn't get nearly half what I wanted to reading wise this week but I'm getting there. My reads for this weekend are an odd bunch again because why would I not do the odd thing? Lock & Mori by Heather W. Petty, The Shadow Revolution: Crown & Key by Clay & Susan Griffith, and Controlling Her Pleasure (Under His Command #1) by Lili Valente... so Sherlock Holmes, more Sherlock Holmes, and some super dirty erotica. Young Adult, Fantasy, and Erotica.

Do you ever find yourself reading such a random and polar set of books at the same time? Speaking of your reading... drop me a comment and let me know what luscious tomes are taking up your hours right now. Also, pop over to The Rhialist this weekend because I have an art feature you might love.

And I'm off to sweep and vacuum because the hubs and I hit a matinee of Pitch Perfect 2 instead of doing chores today and we have company arriving any minute. (Totally love you guys more than having friends over, ha!) ♥ -- Rhi

About the Author

Brenda Drake, the youngest of three children, grew up an Air Force brat and the continual new kid at school until her family settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Brenda’s fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother’s animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. So it was only fitting that she would choose to write young adult and middle grade novels with a bend toward the fantastical. When Brenda’s not writing or doing the social media thing, she’s haunting libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops or reading someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).

Phantoms Fan Forever! (5 stars)

If you loved GHOST OF A PROMISE, do yourself a favor and just buy this book. Chances are you had already started rooting for Kerry and Paul during Jackson and Ava's book and not only is this going to fill that need, it's going to introduce Jackson's replacement. So, so stinking good.

If you're new to the series and your tastes tend to lean more into the urban fantasy shelves because you love a solid paranormal plot you have got to read the Phantoms novels. You could easily start here with GIVE UP THE GHOST and go back if you want some of the small and potentially confusing details cleared up. This is one time that I don't think reading out of order will be a big issue. Paul and Kerry are such a fabulous couple, quite opposite in many ways but their friendship is sweet and I was dying for them to get together. Moran made sure it was one of the most hard won HEA's I think I have ever read. Seriously, everything was against them!

I was pleasantly surprised that Moran managed to pull of geeky Paul without going into ridiculous stereotypes, with nerdy heroes that can be a tough balance. She did wonderfully! Paul's attention to detail definitely translates beyond his historical research job and into the love scenes. If you're not frothing for a nerd of your own after reading them I wanna know!

From start to finish it's a wonderful mix of ghost investigation, team work, and romance. I loved it and I think anyone who enjoys those three elements will too.

Book Blitz: Banish by Nicola Marsh [Excerpt + #Giveaway]

Dear readers, I hardcore loved this excerpt! I got chills and I hope you do too. Please leave me a comment letting me know what you think of it. -- Rhi

Excerpt:

Wrapped in plain brown paper with a card addressed to me, the flattish box looked like it could be a CD cover and my heart skipped a beat. Maybe this time Ronan had settled for playing the song and not filming it?
After what had happened with the last clip? Doubtful.
I palmed the parcel and waited until I got inside to open it, scurrying to my room and slamming the door before ditching my satchel and flopping into the bed. I loved surprises—bar the nasty one I’d got last night. Presents were a rarity in our household once Mom spiraled out of control, so when I received a gift I took my sweet time opening it and this one was no exception.
I turned over the plain white card: nothing but my name in large block letters, tied to the parcel with brown string. Typical of a no-frills guy with music on his mind rather than decoration.
I slipped a finger beneath the seal at one end, then the other, unfolding the stiff paper and peeking in the end. Yep, definitely a CD cover. I eased off the rest of the paper, eager to listen to my boyfriend’s latest masterpiece.
A flat black cardboard square resided beneath the plastic cover and I flipped it open.
It took me less than a second to realize there wasn’t a CD inside.
And another second to process what was.
Bile rose in my throat as I flung the packet away, my hands jerking so much I could barely grab the trash can as I heaved into it.
I retched until I had nothing left and still the waves of nausea rolled over me, exacerbating the dizziness.
I wished I could black out, that I didn’t have to look at proof of my madness lying on the floor like a coiled cobra ready to strike.
Seeing the dead body on the video, seeing Noah’s name spelled out at the séance, paled next to the enormity of this.
The necklace I’d given my ex, the one I’d buried alongside him for sentimental reasons, on the carpet at my feet.

Hades -cover

Excerpt:

The thought of living one more day the way he’d lived the last five thousand years made him want to throw up as he prowled the length of his crypt until he swore the soles of his boots cried out for mercy.
Azagoth had left him hours ago with all kinds of assurances that Cat wouldn’t be harshly punished for what she’d done. But Azagoth’s idea of “harsh” was a lot different from Hades’s. Well, not usually, but for Cat, definitely.
Hades just hoped Azagoth hadn’t suspected that anything had gone on between them. Technically, Hades hadn’t gone against Azagoth’s orders, but the Grim Reaper wasn’t a fan of technicalities. And if he did anything to punish Cat for what Hades had done, Hades would fight that bastard until he was too dead to fix.
Snarling, Hades threw his fist into the wall. Never, not in his entire life, had he felt this way about a female. Hell, he hadn’t felt this way about anything. Oh, he’d always been passionate about meting out justice, but this was a different kind of passion. This was an all-consuming desire to be with someone. To be something better for that someone.
He hadn’t known Cat for long, but in their brief time together, he’d shared things he’d always kept private. He’d given comfort and had been comforted. He’d wanted, and he’d been wanted back.
She wants to go back to Heaven, idiot.
Yeah, then there was that. The chances of going back were extremely slim, given that in all of angelic existence, only a handful of fallen angels had been offered the opportunity. But just the fact that she wanted to go was troubling.
Oh, he understood. Who would choose to live in the grim darkness of the underworld when they could flit around in light and luxury? But dammit, Cat was wanted down here. Could he make her see that?
Closing his eyes, he braced his forehead on the cool stone wall he’d just punched. Pain wracked him and not just because he’d broken bones in his hand and they were knitting together with agonizing speed. That pain was nothing compared to the ache in his heart.
He needed to be with Cat, but how? He supposed he could try reasoning with Azagoth. Sometimes the guy wasn’t completely unbending. Especially now that he had Lilliana. She’d leveled him out, had given him a new perspective on life and relationships.
But would it be enough?
Because one thing was certain. If Hades couldn’t have Cat in his life, then Azagoth had saved it for nothing.

It’s easy enough to quell an uprising, but for the first time, Hades is torn between delivering justice — or bestowing mercy — on the beautiful female who could be his salvation…or his undoing. Thanks to her unwitting participation in another angel’s plot to start Armageddon, Cataclysm was kicked out of Heaven and is now a fallen angel in service of Hades’s boss, Azagoth.
