Review: Mind the Gap Volume 1

Mind the Gap Volume 1: Intimate Strangers
Graphic Novel, Paranormal, Mystery
Print (168 pages, IMAGE COMICS)
Elle Peterssen is young, wealthy, and beautiful - and there is a reason someone tried to kill her! Only, Elle doesn't remember any of this. Mind the Gap, the new series by the Eisner Award-winning writer Jim McCann (Return of the Dapper Men), is a mystery with a paranormal twist. Elle, in a spirit form detached from her comatose body, must not only unravel the mystery of her attacker's identity and motive, but her entire life as well. Who can she trust, in both this word and in the gap she exists in that lies between life and death? Deceit, secrets, and hidden agendas are everywhere in a story where everyone is a suspect, and no one is innocent. Collects Mind the Gap #1-5.

Intense story, visually compelling! (4 stars)

This year I set out to expand my graphic novel reading and I couldn't resist the intriguing cover art of MIND THE GAP VOL. 1. Someone tried to kill Elle but she's trapped in a strange realm of coma patients somewhere between life and something beyond. Only... she doesn't remember who she is or how she got there.

It's a quick read and the concept isn't particularly original, but I still found it engrossing and enjoyable. There are plenty of potential perps and it seems like Elle herself might not have been a blameless victim but the mystery was no closer to resolution by volume's end.

If you're not usually a comic book reader and you've been looking for a place to jump in I think this has a storytelling style that makes for a great jumping off point. It's beautifully rendered visually but with a plot that stacks up soundly.

Review: Her Sexy Sentinel by Jenn Burke

Her Sexy Sentinel by Jenn Burke
Paranormal Romance
Ebook, Print (239 pages, COVET)
The most dangerous thing they could do is fall in love...
Callie Noble fled to Ottawa to escape danger. But she is far from safe. Overwhelmed by a strange new power she can't control, Callie is terrified and painfully incapacitated. Her only hope is to seek the help of the one man who broke her heart...
Derrick Llewellyn is one of the Sentinels charged with the protection of the city's mysterious secret. Seeing Callie again is a shock enough, but the electricity between them is stronger than ever. Still, loving another marked individual is forbidden, and Callie needs his help—not romantic complications.
But there are forces at work in the city, and Callie finds herself inexorably drawn into a world filled with danger and untold magics. A world where loving Derrick isn't just forbidden...it's the surest way to drive them both mad.

Didn't wow me but I think others are gonna love it. (3 stars)

Who doesn't love a paranormal romance where there's a secret group of guardians living among the rest of us? HER SEXY SENTINEL does a really interesting set-up of just this and I loved that it was set in Canada, which I always find a nice change of pace in the genre. I can't say a lot about it without spoiling the plot but this is a pretty cool mythology to read and I think it would appeal well to urban fantasy fans who have an interest in romances too.

In spite of at times feeling like Callie bordered on the dreaded too-stupid-to-live heroine trope I also found that I didn't dislike her... just her choices. She's been dealt a pretty tough hand to play and that she doesn't immediately run with what others are telling her. Derrick I found harder to like. I think I will be in the minority here but his Alphaness was a little obnoxious and he was making stupid choices as well. Together, their chemistry wasn't as energetic as I'd have expected considering the forbidden nature of their attraction.

If you tend to read a lot of paranormal romance this story is going to be pretty predictable but well executed. Even though I wasn't overly wowed by HSS I think if there were more stories with this world building I'd be inclined to pick up another. I liked Burke's voice and would probably be inclined to read more of her work if it was paranormal in nature.

Review: Vampire Vacation by C.J. Ellison [+ giveaway!]

Vampire Vacation (The V V Inn #1) by C.J. Ellison
Urban Fantasy, Vampires
Ebook, Print (313 pages, RED HOT PUBLISHING)
Meet Vivian. She's a 580-year-old vampire who exudes sex, has a talent for drama, and is passionate about two things: her human husband, Rafe, and their resort for the undead. Her ability to project physical illusions has created the perfect vacation spot—a dark, isolated Alaskan hideaway where visitors can have their wildest fantasies come true.
Vivian knows the best performance requires perfect timing, but the powerful vamp is put to the test when she discovers a corpse in a locked guestroom minutes before the next arrivals. Always cool-headed, Rafe hides the body, convinced he and Vivian can find the culprit without disturbing their guests.
Juggling the increasingly outrageous demands of their customers while tracking a killer isn't easy. Will their poking and prodding give them the answers they need, or will it uncover secrets Vivian would kill to protect?
Warning: This book contains adult content (violence, blood, and sex) and is not intended for readers under 18.

Something fresh for bored UF fans! (3 stars)

I have to preface this review by noting that I have read Ellisson's contemporary erotic romances before and gave them high ratings. Ellisson is also on of a small handful of authors whom I think interacts very well with her fans and writes some amazingly sex positive stuff. But I digress... I'm not sure why I've previously not taken the time to try the V V Inn series but I'm glad I finally did.

The Urban Fantasy genre tends to be filled with young, nubile women just coming into their stride as powerful supernatural beings so it was very refreshing to find Vivian is not only well established in her power as a vampire but also very, very married and happily so. Knowing Ellisson for her hot-monagamy-centric contemporary work I have to say that this is hands-down the reason I would recommend her over and over. The world building is pretty involved and I'll admit there were times I rolled my eyes at it. But if you want the strength and complexity of Anita Blake without the orgies I think that you'll really enjoy VAMPIRE VACATION.

I would be remiss, however, if I didn't mention that I actually hated Vivian. Like many an urban fantasy heroine before her she has strong Mary Sue trappings. Everyone wants her, she's uber powerful, and can pretty much do no wrong. Again, I'd have to compare her to Anita Blake there, Viv just doesn't get it on with everyone who wants her. Because I disliked her so strongly I'm not sure I will read more of the series since she's the central character but I would still recommend the book and series to others who are looking for something different in a genre that can get really stagnant.

Blog Tour: HUNTER REBORN by Katie Reus [Excerpt + giveaway!]

The thrilling new Moon Shifter novel from New York Times bestselling author Katie Reus.

Losing her was the hardest thing he’d ever endured....

Warrior shifter Aiden’s investigation of the trafficking of vampire blood leads to a startling discovery: the beautiful vampire bondmate he thought was dead. Decades ago, they’d defied their powerful families to be together, but then Larissa disappeared without a trace. When their mating link broke, it nearly destroyed Aiden. Now she’s back with no memory of where she’s been. Even more shattering—Larissa claims she has no idea who Aiden is.

Now she’s back....

It’s a race against time to bring down an operation more evil than his pack ever suspected, and Aiden finds himself working side by side with a mate who no longer trusts him—and she wants out. But he lost her once, and he won’t let her go again. Unfortunately, Larissa’s blood is the key to a powerful monster’s dangerous plan—and he’ll stop at nothing to destroy her, sparking off a war between the supernaturals and humans that no one will win.

Copyright © Katie Reus 2015

The vamp must have sensed his intent because he dropped Larissa and ran, sprinting through the club with a preternatural speed. The predator in Aiden wanted to give chase, to hunt him down, but he reined it in for the stronger impulse to protect what was his.

Using all the strength in his hind legs, he jumped from the table and landed right next to Larissa’s still form. Her chest rose and fell steadily and she appeared unharmed. But he wouldn’t be satisfied until he knew for sure.

“Aiden, look at me.” He heard Teresa’s soft voice nearby, but he couldn’t look at her. He refused. All his attention was on Larissa.

“You need to shift back,” Teresa whispered urgently.

Weekend Reading [01/23-01/25] :: Genre Variety & Food as the Enemy

It's weekend reading tiiiiiime! And I'm grumpy again. But I decided to talk about reading before I explain why so if you just wanna talk reads you can skip the bits and bobs about my life.

This weekend I'm juggling a handful of reads. The library notified me that Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was auto-checked-out to me because it became available and I fell asleep listening to it last night. I can see why everyone loves it. Very spooky and otherworldly so far. I'm also listening to Night Rising by Chris Marie Green but I can't seem to get into it so far. The characters aren't working for me, but the world building is really promising so I'm going to give it a full listen before I decide whether to continue with the series.

In ebooks I'm reading Broken Shadows, the third Shadowminds book, by A.J. Larrieu. It's pretty good so far but my copy's print is so tiny I'm having a tough time sitting through more than a few pages before I need a break. Anyone here read the series yet? Riding the Odds is my other read. I really don't have time for another read right now but the premise was just too cool to pass up. I'm definitely digging it so far.

So let's see that's a gothic/paranormal YA, two urban fantasies, and a scifi romance. Whatcha guys think? Am I diversifying enough? lol

And then there's my news about life...

This week my husband got results back on an allergy testing I finally got him to have done. He was allergic to none of the things we thought he might be like pet dander or dust. Instead he's allergic to almost every mold and pollen... and a TON of foods. Common foods. Wheat, rice, potatoes, corn, garlic, tomatoes, yeast, oranges, peanuts, walnuts, and shrimp. Over night we went from average American household to food insanity. Did you know that corn is in almost everything? Same for wheat and tomatoes.

So I've been extremely stressed out trying to find out how I can feed our family and not use garlic or tomatoes or any of the other things. Which means no pizza, no tacos, no mac n' cheese, no stir-fry... the list goes on and on. Many of them we'll eventually be able to have but I have to learn how to make everything using alternatives like coconut flour, tapioca starch, carrots, and other substitutes. It's a major challenge an if the $400+ I spent on groceries today are any indication it's going to be a spendy lifestyle change. I'm already missing spaghetti and cereal.

If you happen to know any great resources for folks with major food allergies let me know. We're flailing a lot right now... my husband is pretty picky and he's missing beer a lot. lol

And now I'm off to sort out something for dinner and to try and figure out how I'm going to find time to experiment with all these new flours and bread making! ♥ -- Rhi

Cover Reveal: THE VAMPIRE OF VANCOUVER by Liz Meldon

The Vamp of Vancouver - Liz Meldon

Title: The Vampire of Vancouver (Lovers and Liars #2)
Author: Liz Meldon
Series: Lovers and Liars
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Cover by: Humble Nation
Release Date: February 10, 2015
~ Synopsis ~
The Vampire of Vancouver (Lovers and Liars, #2)

Aphrodite, goddess of love and lust, is not impressed. After giving up her penthouse suite in trendy Manhattan to go monster hunting around the world, she finds herself in a sad hotel room in Vancouver with a decidedly distracted Loki. She hadn't expected this job to be so serious, and her Norse partner isn't exactly bowing to her whims these days. What was the point in coming with him if they weren’t beneath the sheets all hours of the day? It seems like such a waste of sexual compatibility. Humph.

Meanwhile, Loki, Norse trickster, is equally unimpressed. He hadn't thought taking a beautiful partner along would make his work so difficult. Her unfocused energy grates on his nerves, and his lust for her is only surpassed by his desire for more godly power. He will complete this job, whether she likes it or not, and he’ll walk away one step closer to regaining his old abilities. Now, if only he can get his partner to focus on the task at hand, not seduction. Ridiculous woman.

Aphrodite and Loki, an unlikely team if there ever was one, find themselves in the City of Vancouver hunting vampires. The job is pretty straightforward: rescue the damsel, kill the monster. Unfortunately, even the easiest of jobs hardly ever go according to plan.

One Night of Trouble

No More Mr. Nice Guy...

The moment AJ Walsh sees the sexy, tattooed pixie walk up to his bar, it's lust at first sight. He's always been labeled the "nice" guy―opening doors, buying flowers, and never, ever having one-night stands. But with this wicked little angel with red lips and unfathomably dark eyes? Oh, yeah. Tonight, "nice" has nothing to do with it...

Brett Conlon is trying to convince her family that she's put away her reckless wild girl side for good. Nothing―and no one―could be better for her reputation than golden boy AJ Walsh. So they make a deal: if he plays The Good Boyfriend for her family, he can be a very, very bad boy with her. Now their one naughty night is about to turn into a whole lot of trouble...

He flashed that boyish smile she was growing accustomed to. “All right. Ask me.”

She knit her brows. “Ask you what?”

“To be your pretend boyfriend. Isn’t that what this heart-to-heart has been leading to?”

Brett faltered. “Actually, I was only going to invite you to the barbecue. I figured a few days after that, I can just tell them I dumped you.”

Cover Reveal: Hearts on Fire by Alison Packard

Country music star Jessie Grant has it all. An amazing voice, a string of multi-platinum albums, and a sold-out concert tour. But just before her Hearts on Fire tour rolls into Las Vegas, her lead guitarist is badly injured and is unable to play. Desperate to find a replacement before the night of a televised live show, Jessie is forced to accept help from the last person on earth she wants to see again.

Drew Carmichael has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the best up-and-coming musicians in Nashville, without cashing in on his renowned father’s name. When Jessie’s manager calls and asks him to fill in for her band’s injured guitar player, he agrees to help Jessie out even though she cut him out of her life four months ago.

In Sin City, sparks fly between Jessie and Drew, and it isn’t long before they give in to their mutual attraction. But when the dark past Jessie has successfully hidden for ten years explodes in the media, their tenuous bond is put to the test, and both Jessie and Drew must learn to trust each other if they don’t want their newfound romantic relationship to go up in flames.

Enjoy an excerpt:

As if sensing she was being watched, she turned and their gazes collided across the stage. Her smile faltered as the seconds ticked by. She remained rooted to the spot, so he moved forward. One of them had to make the first move; it looked like it would be him.

“Hey,” he said as he halted in front of her.

She thanked the roadie, who smiled and left them to attend to Tara and Renee.

Blog Tour: LEATHER AND LACE by Jessie Evans [FREEBIE!]

leather and lace tour banner

A sexy, swoony romance from New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Jessie Evans. Cowboy bikers, fireworks, and romance, oh my...

Wild girl, Mia Sherman, has a secret--she isn't as fearless as she pretends. Descended from Lonesome Point, Texas's founding family, Mia grew up hearing tales of an old Irish curse that had followed the Shermans to America. At age twenty-four, Mia is still terrified of the stories, because they aren't stories. They are a warning about what will happen if Mia allows love and romance into her life. The curse struck Mia's grandmother and her great-great-whatever grandmother, and Mia knows she could be next. The first-born daughter of every generation is cursed to lose her husband on her wedding night, which is one of the many reasons Mia has sworn off relationships.

Until the fateful day Sawyer Kane rides his Harley into her life...

Rancher turned restoration expert, Sawyer Kane, can't believe his luck when the feisty owner of the lingerie shop next to his hotel turns out to be the curator of his latest project, a ghost town he's been sent to restore. He's looking forward to long, hot days talking history, and hotter nights with Mia, but the redhead with the killer smile seems determined to keep him at a friendly distance. But when a dangerous man from Mia's past arrives in town, Sawyer finds himself drawn into her inner circle, and into the legend of Lonesome Point itself.

Can true love conquer all, even a centuries-old curse? Mia and Sawyer may be the first to find out.

Look for the entire Lonesome Point series:

The 12 Dates of Christmas: A Lonesome Point Holiday Novella

Fans of Brenda Novak, Lori Wilde, and hot, alpha cowboys will love the Lonesome Point Texas series!

“I take my time before telling you about my past,” Sawyer said, continuing their game of twenty questions. “Not because I want to hide from you, but because it’s not something I share with many people, even people I care about. Do you resent me for keeping a few secrets, or do you understand?”
Mia reached out, covering his hand with hers. The familiar electricity leapt between them, but this time there were softer emotions there, too. “I understand. It was like you said the other day, sometimes the past needs to stay in the past.”
He turned his hand over, until his palm kissed hers and his fingers curled around her hand. “Your turn.”

Weekend Reading [01/16-01/18] :: In which sleeplessness makes me a rage monster...

It's Friday and I just can't even...

My 5-year-old has been on-again-off-again sick since mid-December. This week it came roaring back with this wicked snot-factory thing. She can't sleep without medicine to make it so she can breath but then as soon as the drowsiness wears off from the meds she wakes up and is UP for the day. This morning's wake-up was at 3:41AM. Nothing I tried got her back to sleep so I'm running on coffee fumes and rage. Pray for me. I might murder someone this weekend. :P

The good news is I'm starting to get my feet back under me after last week's bad news. I'm not over it but I'm better than I was. I bought myself a bottle of wine and I plan to scrub the tub, drop in one of my Fandom Cupcakes I got for Christmas, and relax in some scalding water... tomorrow night.

Friday which is usually our Nerd Night with friends but the menfolk abandoned the lady nerds for some video gaming tonight. Which means it's lady's night and I have no idea what shenanigans we plan on getting up to. I'm so boring I imagine we'll wind up eating dinner at a restaurant and all heading home for sleep... or in my case a book. ;)

So what book(s) are you winding your way through this weekend? I've had some really good reads lately and I'm almost done with PAPER OR PLASTIC by Vivi Barnes. I wasn't planning on reading it but sometimes you just need a romantic contemporary YA and it was perfect timing. I am loving Noah, if I was 16 I'd have a total crush.

On audio I've been listening to THE RIFT WALKER and I kind of wish James Marsters did more narrations because I love his narration on this. I think I might take a break from it and start NIGHT RISING though. I've wanted to read the Vampire Babylon series for years and had an opp to review it on audio I could not pass up.

Who are some of your favorite audio book narrators and why? I've been wanting to find this out but dunno how many of you are audio readers.

*yawn* and on that note I'm going to go make a cup of coffee so I can survive dinner with friends. May your weekend be filled with relaxation or fun with friends or whatever positive, good stuff you need right now! ♥ -- Rhi

What I Love to Write by Chris Myers

I love to write multi-genre stories that cross barriers and spark the imagination. I read everything from non-fiction to sci-fi from romance to political thrillers. I love to write stories that keep the readers guessing. Learning from good mysteries, suspense, and thrillers allows me to inject those elements into romance and my young adult series. Stories that make readers care about the characters and keep them turning the pages are what I strive to achieve.

Unlike many authors, I try to read every written review and often find some really easy fixes to make my fiction better. I don’t agree with everything, but for the most part, I find many of the reviewers are thoughtful and considerate. Sometimes I get a laugh when someone says something couldn’t possibly be true when it is. Let’s face it; truth really is stranger than fiction. Though my work is fiction, I pull from my life and others’ experiences to add in salient details. I research whatever I’m unsure about or where I want more depth. It’s probably not possible to get every detail completely accurate, but I work hard at putting on the characters’ shoes and walking around in them. It’s not what I would do, but what my characters would do.

What do you love to read? Please respond in the comments.
