He's not that kind of angel.
Jarrid is a “Bound One”: half angel, half human, trained from childhood to enforce Heaven’s laws on earth. An assassin with no remorse. And no choice. When he discovers an ancient ritual called Ascension, which might give him a shot at freedom, he can’t resist his lifelong dream. He only needs to find one last Renegade angel and take him down…using a certain woman to flush the angel out of hiding.
She's not what he's expecting.
News reporter Ionie Gifford has no clue an outlaw angel wants her dead, much less why, but she does know one thing: the enigmatic Jarrid, with his penetrating silver eyes and his worship-worthy body, is her ticket to the city's supernatural underworld, where she might finally be able to locate her mother's killer. For that kind of information, she's willing to risk everything...
They can't be together -- but can't keep apart...
Blindsided by Ionie's beauty and tenacity, Jarrid finds the millennia-old glacier around his heart melting. But when he's faced with a choice, will he sacrifice Ionie for freedom from his brutal servitude—or agree to be bound for eternity, to protect the life of the woman he's falling in love with?
From novelist Tricia Skinner comes a story that will have fans of action-packed love stories applauding. Seamlessly combining elements of paranormal romance and gritty urban fantasy, the Angel Assassins series is a heart-pounding spin on angel mythology.

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Angela will be awarding a the winners choice of one of the following prizes (international giveaway -- All photos used from Etsy shops that she plans to purchase the gifts from. Actual gift will be sourced from winner's country and will likely look different for international winners):

2. Potions master decal kit: Trick out your Kitchenaid with this decal kit! Ennara approved.

3. Emergency Potion Necklace: Potion/necklace dependent on winner's location. Ennara approved.

Or the winner may choose something from Ennara Swag (if they live in the US).

When strange accidents start happening around thirteen year-old necromancer Ennara and her friends, she must search for the mysterious stolen artifacts causing the attacks while learning the highest form of magic--the spells that could prevent the fruition of a terrible prophecy.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

“You haven’t much time,” Formult said, glancing again at the door. He crossed to the far edge of the dome and opened a huge glass panel. The winged horses enthusiastically trotted to the edge of the roof, and the griffins took up the rear.

The professor patted Snowflake’s neck. “I’m fairly certain I saw the book when I was in Dordonne. That is, I saw the Bishop of Dordonne with an odd-looking book in the Royal Court. It was my last clear memory before the spell… Anyway, when you find the bishop, I believe you’ll find that book.”

Ennara had heard of the Bishop of Dordonne once before, but where? She shook her head. Now they had two clues to look for—the crypts, and the bishop. Maybe hunting down the Book of Shadows was something they could do, after all.

Formult clapped Snowflake on the hindquarters and stepped aside. She leapt from the door and into the air effortlessly. Ferrus and the two griffins followed.

“Take good care and don’t worry about us,” Formult called after them. “We’ll have the school straight by the time you get back.”

The horses ascended as the door to the aviary burst open. The two druids from the hall tumbled forward. They quickly assessed the scene and raised their wands to the flying creatures. Smoos crouched to pounce and Formult unfurled his whip.

“Let’s get out of here!” Kithe yelled.

Without further instruction, the pegasii and griffins pounded their muscular wings and lifted them away. Galdurlan retreated, quickly becoming a tiny village, then a bay, and then an island alone in a cold, dark ocean. Ennara wrapped her cloak tightly and pulled her hood up as she settled into Snowflake’s rhythmic flight. The air grew icy, and she leaned into the horse to share its warmth. Beside her, Cinne did the same, resting her face against Ferrus’s dark mane.

Gevin and his griffin flew slightly above and behind the pegasii, to the left. His bright green eyes shone from behind his heavy black hood. He was enjoying the flight as much as she. Kithe rode his lion-eagle ahead of the other. He’d bundled himself up in his hunter green cloak and smiled as he gazed into the distance. The hilt of the Sword of Gisilfrid glinted on his shoulder.

From the tiny castle on the retreating island, a screech tore through the air, then another. Two tiny black objects rose in pursuit. Then another, larger object. Two larger objects. The tattoo on Ennara’s hand prickled. Her stomach grew queasy. They would not be let off the island without a fight. Long necks and massive wings pulled the large creatures into the sky. Dragons.

Blog Tour: LOVE ME TO DEATH by Marissa Clarke [Review + giveaway!]

Synopsis:

Medical research scientist Elena Arcos has always lived her life under the radar. When she is shot in a convenience store robbery, Elena finds herself rocketed into supernatural insanity courtesy of a sexy immortal law enforcer. He’s convinced she’s some kind of freaky half-vampire thing and that her deceased dad was the real deal: a blood sucking monster. Yeah, right.

Nikolai Itzov never anticipated battling the urge to kiss the offspring of his father’s murderer. As a Slayer, an elite law enforcer descended from Azrael himself, his orders from the Underveil General are clear: Kill her or die.

Nikolai and Elena find themselves in a life and death battle to stop a plot designed to lift the Underveil and enslave humans. With her analytical mind and his centuries of training, they might be able to foil the plot with their lives and maybe their hearts intact. But in order to succeed, he must help her become the very thing he hates the most: an Undead.

My review:

Blurred UF/PNR lines make for an awesome read! (5 stars)

When I started reading LOVE ME TO DEATH I went in thinking I'd love it. The blurb sounded great but didn't prepare me for what an Alpha a-hole Nikolai would be. I'm well known in reader circles for hating on Alphas so I knew right away I was going to hate him. Once Elena started getting all hot-and-bothered for him even as he was threatening to kill her over and over I was done. So very, very done. But I had promised a review for the blog tour and by the gods of paranormal romance I was going to stick it out... if you saw the star rating you know that Clarke worked some magic.

While I still kinda disliked Nikolai even at the end it was Elena who changed my mind. Sure, she was getting turned-on my him when he was being so wretched but once she decided she wasn't putting up with his domineering crap she dug her heels in and didn't let him bulldoze her. She was awesome and I loved her for it. Elena even gets a moment where he tells her she can't go somewhere and she lays down the law. The genre needs more heroines who do this! So I really think Alpha lovers will dig Nik and urban fantasy fans who are used to stronger heroines will love Elena for her backbone. As a couple their chemistry is very push-pull and oh-so smoldering.

What made me excited to review this and rave about it to my fellow PNR fans is the amazing world building Clarke pulls off. It's not every day I really want to enter a fictional world but this one is exciting. There are vampires and slayers, wood elves and light elves, dog and cat shifters, and even a race called Time Folders (Whovians you need this book). The secondary characters are excellent and really help sustain the action and intrigue when it could easily have been plodding. If you're a reader who tends to prefer urban fantasy over paranormal romances I think you might really find this a great cross-over experience.

I'm very excited for more Underveil series books and made sure I asked Clarke if my favorite secondary character will be getting his own book... and she said yes, that's the plan. If you like books by Larissa Ione, Jeaniene Frost, or Cece Robson definitely check out LOVE ME TO DEATH.

Nashville is the newest breeding ground for the darkest creatures of the occult. Huntress Josie Hawk will protect her streets—whatever it takes.

Bar owner and paranormal ass-kicker, Josie Hawk, is dealing with the stress of how to introduce her vampire-lover, Keller, to her vampire-hunting father. Meanwhile, the streets are buzzing with excitement over the announcement of a masquerade themed celebration with the up-and-coming stars of country music.

Josie and Keller are forced to abandon their trip into the secret world of hunters when a mysterious crew of cloaked beings emerge from the shadows and threaten to crash the biggest party of the year.

With the supernatural activity escalating to code red, Josie must find a way to stop the insidious evil hidden behind the array of masks. If she doesn’t, the masquerade party could turn into a mass funeral.

Elle J Rossi grew up in rural Indiana surrounded by great people, a huge family and more animals than she could count. Sadly, there were no vampires or shape shifters lurking about in the woods behind her house. What's a girl to do? Seek them out, that's what! The sights and sounds of the world beckoned, so she left her small town to escape into a creative world full of music - and hopefully rendezvous with a vampire or two. As a full time singer she was able to lose herself in a thousand different songs in a hundred different places, all the while scanning the crowds for those ever-elusive beings of the occult.

After meeting the love of her life and settling down, she yearned to find a new and fulfilling creative outlet. Overly fond of the happily ever after, she wondered what it would be like to have her own characters lead her down dark and twisted paths. The very first word on the very first page sealed her fate. She'd found a new love. She'd found her escape.

Now along with weaving haunting tales about the journey to love, she's creating cover art for authors around the world and loving every second of it. For fun, she cranks country music to take her back to her roots, and sings karaoke anytime she gets a chance. Her husband, two children, and three cats that rule the roost keep her company along the way and guarantee she doesn't get lost in the enchanted forest. She wouldn't have it any other way. And, yes, she is still on the lookout for real-life vampires.

About APHRODITE'S CHARMS

From New York Times, USA Today and international bestselling author Julie Kenner (aka J. Kenner) -- Aphrodite's Charms contains all four full-length novels in the bestselling Protector (Superhero) series of paranormal romances.

This bundle contains the full text of Aphrodite's Kiss, Aphrodite's Passion, Aphrodite's Secret, Aphrodite's Flame (each book is available for purchase individually as well as in this bundle)

Aphrodite's Kiss:

Zoe Smith might look like your average, ordinary elementary school librarian, but she’s about as far from normal as a girl can get. Because Zoe is descended from a line of superheroes … and as her twenty-fifth birthday approaches, she has to decide if she’s going to embrace her heritage (including the X-ray vision and her extraordinary senses) or submit herself for mortalization and be that average, ordinary girl.

Considering how lousy she’s done so far on all the Council-imposed tests, chucking the whole superhero thing might be very best thing … especially when she realizes that sexy, private investigator George Bailey Taylor is convinced that Zoe is one-hundred percent “the girl next-door”.

An ex-cop turned PI, George Bailey Taylor’s had one hell of a life being bounced around from foster home to foster home. All he wants now is a normal life with a normal wife in a normal neighborhood. And when he meets Zoe Smith, he’s certain she’s the typical American girl.

Except she does have an overprotective brother who seems able to appear and disappear at will. And a creepy cousin who’s always lurking about. And why does everyone in her family pretend to actually talk to the pet ferret? With her super powers, Zoe can do just about anything … except make Taylor fall in love with her.

For that, they’re both going to need a different kind of magic …

Aphrodite's Passion:

Mortal Tracy Tannin has always felt like the most ordinary girl in the world, especially since she’s lived her whole life in the shadow of her Hollywood superstar grandmother. But when she finds an antique belt in her grandmother’s attic, everything changes. Suddenly everyone wants Tracy—or maybe they just want the belt.

Superhero Hale is more than happy to do his job protecting mortals. But get emotionally close to one? Absolutely no way. Which is why he’s thrown a bit off his game when he suddenly finds himself craving the mortal woman he’s been assigned to protect. But that must just be the effect of the magical belt he’s supposed to retrieve, right?

Because there’s no way that a guy like Hale can fall for a girl like Tracy.
Or is there?

Aphrodite's Secret:

Shapeshifter Jason Murphy spent six years captive to the most notorious Outcast in the Protector world—Hieronymous Black, who also happens to be Jason’s father. Worse than his is the distrust that his absence put between him and the love of his life, Lane.

Lane knows only that the father of her child disappeared just moments after she told him she was pregnant, and she’s spent the last few years struggling as a single mom. Now Jason’s determined to win back his family.

But to do that, he’s going to have to face his father one last time. And he’s going to have to tell Lane the truth—and hope that this time she’ll see him as a hero.

Aphrodite's Flame:

Mordichai grew up under the shadow of the baddest bad guy out there—Hieronymous Black—and he’s used his power to conjure fire to help Daddy Dearest in numerous nefarious plots. But he’s reformed now—and just in time to meet the woman of his dreams.

Isole Frost believes Mordichai when he says he’s truly reformed. Trouble is, she also believes that Hieronymous truly wants to give up his dark ways and join the good guys.

He may be the man of her dreams, but she’s sure that he’s wrong. And when they’re forced to work together, they’re either going to prove that fire won’t mesh with ice—or that the inevitable result is a whole lotta steam!

Review: Talon by Julie Kagawa

Talon (Talon Saga #1) by Julie Kagawa
Young Adult, Dragons, Romance
Ebook/Hardcover/Audio (464 pages, HARLEQUIN TEEN)
In Julie Kagawa's groundbreaking modern fantasy series, dragons walk among us in human form.
Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they're positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.
Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.
Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon's newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey—and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him—and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.
Author Site: website

Worth the wait! (4 stars)

Hatchling dragons, Ember and her brother Dante, have been assigned to Crescent Beach, California for the summer. For three months all they have to do is obey curfew and check in with their human caretakers as they try to assimilate with humans. But it's not long into their trial when their 'vacation' gets cramped by daily training sessions. As young members of Talon they are being prepared for their roles in both hunting down rogue dragons for retraining and for protecting their kind from the infamous Order of St. George.

When Garret and his partner take an assignment to try and root out a rumored dragon sleeper in Crescent Beach he's known among his peers within the Order of St. George as the perfect soldier. His whole life revolves around training to slay dragons not socializing with teenage girls in hopes of outing a dragon. Meeting Ember brings out new feelings that make him question if everything he's been trained to know about dragons is true, even as Ember begins to see her own organization might not be everything she thought it was either.

I'm usually a huge Kagawa fan but I have to admit from the start I'm not a big fan of alternating first-person narratives and that really bogged this book down for me. It gets worst in the latter chapters as the characters rehash the same events from their own perspective. I also found myself never quite warming up to Garret. He wasn't unlikable, I just found his characterization did a little too much telling and not enough organic story was happening to really peel back his layers so I could feel attached to him. Cobalt on the other hand had personality that came out well in his dialog but then his thoughts about Ember went randomly lovey and it felt awkward, almost uncomfortable.

While I had a little trouble with her love interests I liked Ember a lot. Not as much as other Kagawa heroines but still, she's one readers are going to be eager to follow. I very much enjoyed her evolution from the beginning of the book and fortunately the story is fairly smooth paced before it gets mega-dramatic toward the climax. It was overall pretty predictable as far as plots go but Kagawa manages to make the journey enjoyable enough it's okay to know what's going to happen to each character in the end.

Definitely not my favorite book from this author but a creative new world of dragons and dragon slayers I will be eager to revisit as soon as the next installment hits shelves.

Spotlight: The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse [Recipe + giveaway!]

Dear Rhireaders, I know you're not all zombie fans but if you're even the tiniest bit concerned you may one day find yourself in a post-apocalyptic situation you gotta get this book! I have been loving it when I sit down to read it and will be reviewing it next week. It is so much more than just recipes, I've been learning all kinds of useful skills for feeding yourself from how to find food to how to cook when ovens and stoves are a thing of the past. I had a lot of cool choices to share with you today but I went with one you could try right now so you'll have a feel for it when the zombies rise! Be sure and check it out and then find out how to win your own copy below! -- Rhi

Eating Out of Your Cupboard
Alas, it’s been days since the initial outbreak started, and those damn zombies are still picking at what’s left of the living hors d’oeuvre platter beyond the four walls of your safe and well-fortified domicile. Plus, the power has been out for a while now—all the fresh food is long gone save for some onion, garlic, and a couple of sad potatoes.
Welcome to carb country. Unless you have a locavore’s personal stash of preserved or canned summer bounty, chances are you’re going to be surviving on a lot of starchy fare until it’s safe to go outside again.
As you will see in the following pages, there is quite a lot that can be done with the common North American pantry staples like flour, dried pastas, rice, canned proteins, beans, vegetables, and fruits. These recipes are simple and easy to prepare (some of them ludicrously so), and focus on very simple ingredients that most people keep kicking around in the cupboard—meaning there is lots of room to add or amend based on your own pantry stash.

No-Knead to Panic Bread
1 x 1 ½ -lb. loaf, or enough for 2–3 Hungry Survivors

It’s another day of being completely consumed by the rise of the undead, so why not soothe your troubled soul with the rise of a dead easy and absolutely delicious bread?
Bless Jim Lahey’s hopefully-still-living soul for developing this recipe. You may know Lahey, owner of New York’s Sullivan Street Bakery, for the no-knead bread revolution he kicked off via food journalist and author Mark Bittman in the early aughts— it took the home-cooking scene by storm and spread almost as quickly as an undead plague. His approach makes use of a long rising time and a very wet dough where gluten molecules are mobile and free to align themselves naturally (rather than relying on kneading). Translation: it takes a while, but requires no bread-making skill or specialized knowledge and virtually zero work.
The versatility of bread goes without saying. It makes a mean companion to Mental Fruit Lentil Soup (page 86), but can be schmeared, topped, dipped, or sandwichized in any number of ways—raid your cupboard and experiment.
This recipe is adapted from “No-Knead Bread” in Jim Lahey’s My Bread: The Revolutionary No-Work, No-Knead Method, an excellent book to have on hand for a variety of zpoc-friendly no-knead breads.

Requires:
1 small bowl
1 large mixing bowl
1 mixing spoon
Plastic wrap
2 clean cotton kitchen towels or other clean breathable cloths
1 large, heavy pot or other oven-proof vessel, with lid

Heat Source:
Indirect, Ammo Can Oven or other Oven Hack (page 44)

Time:
5 minutes prep
14–20 hours mostly unattended rising time
45 minutes baking time
30 minutes cooling time

Ingredients:
¼ tsp. active dry yeast
1 ¾ c. plus 2 tbsp. warm water
Pinch of sugar
3 c. all-purpose or bread flour, more for dusting
1 ¼ tsp. salt

Method:
1.      Proof the yeast by mixing it with 2 tablespoons of warm water (not hot!) and a pinch of sugar in a small bowl—it is ready to use when the top is foamy, about 5 minutes.
2.      Mix together the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl until blended. Add water and any wet flavorings (like honey) and mix until well combined. Your dough will be wet and sticky.
3.      Cover the bowl with plastic wrap if available (you can write the time down on the plastic with a marker), and one of the kitchen towels and pop it in a now nearly useless microwave or other dark spot to rest at least 12 hours, preferably 18 hours. The dough is ready for the next stage when the surface is bubbly.
4.       Lightly sprinkle a work surface with flour and fold your dough out onto it. If using any add-ins (see Variations), sprinkle them on top of the dough now. Sprinkle the dough with a small amount of flour, then fold it over on itself two times. Loosely cover with plastic wrap and let it sit for 15 minutes.
5.      Cover a kitchen towel with a generous amount of flour. Dust your hands with flour, and sprinkle just enough flour on the dough to prevent it from sticking to you, then shape it quickly into a ball. An imperfect zombies-are-breaking-down-my-defenses ball is just fine.
6.      Place your ball seam side down onto the prepared cloth and generously dust the top with more flour. Cover the ball with a second towel and let rest for 2 hours.
7.      Half an hour before the 2-hour mark of the second rise, set up your Ammo Can Oven for 450°F (see Judging Temperature, page 47), then place the oven-proof dish with the lid inside to preheat.
8.      After the two-hour rise is complete, carefully remove the hot pot or other vessel from the Ammo Can Oven and, after removing the lid, plop your ball of dough into it, seam side up.
9.      Bake, with the lid on, for 30 minutes. Remove the lid carefully, then bake another 15–30 minutes until nicely browned. Let cool for about 30 minutes before eating.

Variations:
·         2 tbsp. honey (added at beginning with water), 1 tbsp. of fennel seeds, ½ c. of raisins, and cornmeal for dusting
·         1 small potato (peeled, diced, sautéed until browned), ½ small onion (minced and sautéed until soft), and ½ tsp. dried dill
·         ½ c. olives, preferably jarred but canned work too

·         1 medium apple (peeled and diced), 1 tsp. cinnamon combined with 1 tbsp. sugar

Sara Daniels needs to change her life, so she sets out to run her late grandmother’s farm. With no man at her side, and deserted by friends who can’t abide her obsession with mythology, it’s the perfect time to escape.

Hermes, favored son of Zeus, has been framed by his hateful stepmother, Hera. Fleeing Olympus with his life, he finds himself in an abandoned farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. It’s the ideal place to hide from Zeus that is until the owner— a woman with long, flaming red hair and the darkest blue eyes he’s ever seen — decides to move in.

Sara’s family has divine secrets that even she’s not privy to. Hermes’ secrets, however, have the power to shatter their lives. And with a god as your farmhand, it’s only a matter of time before those secrets are revealed in all their destructive glory.

But the wild attraction that blazes between these two souls will not be denied…even if the outcome threatens to doom them both.
