Review: Marked (anthology)

Marked (anthology) by Kit Rocha, Lauren Dane, Vivian Arend
Anthology, Dystopian, Contemporary Romance, Erotica, Futuristic
Ebook $2.99 (414 pages, SELFPUBLISHED)
Three stories of passion, possession, and ink.
New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Lauren Dane takes you into a brand new world in ALL THAT REMAINS. Summer Killian falls fast and hard when Charlie arrives in Paradise Village. But the heat turns all the way up when she learns Charlie is also with Hatch -- the man she loved four years before. While she's not sure she's cut out for a triad, neither man is going to give her up. (Metamorphosis Series, #1)
Take a ROCKY RIDE with New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Vivian Arend as she leads you back to the Six Pack Ranch. Anna Coleman might be the law around Rocky Mountain House, but bad boy Mitch Thompson knows that under the stiff RCMP uniform is a woman with a passion for speed and pleasure that matches his own, and he's not giving up until she's his. (Thompson & Sons, #1 -- a Coleman Cowboys spin-off series)
Kit Rocha returns to Sector Four in BEYOND TEMPTATION. A promise to a dying friend backfires when Noah Lennox finds that the girl he was supposed to rescue is all grown up -- and wearing O'Kane ink. He wants to protect her from the secrets of their past, but she wants him. And an O'Kane woman always gets what she wants. (Beyond #3.5, set between Beyond Pain and Beyond Jealousy)

The trouble with anthologies... (2 stars)

It's been a long while since I sat down to read an anthology and unfortunately this one reminded me why I'm not a big fan of them. Of the three authors I've only regularly read Kit Rocha but had previously read a holiday themed short Vivian Arend had been in with Rocha's pseudonym, Moira Rogers. I figured I was going to be just fine since I'd been curious about Arend's further work and have heard Dane's is super sexy. Well, here's the rundown...

BEYOND TEMPTATION by Kit Rocha, finally tells us just where exactly Emma came from and what her relationship is with Noah. I'd been curious to see the lady as the O'Kane after the previous three stories but unfortunately I really disliked both Emma and Noah. That rarely happens to me! It also felt very removed from the O'Kane world for some reason—the short format might have had something to do with it. I was left feeling pretty blasĂ© about the entire story. Not one I would recommend as an introduction to the Beyond series. (3 stars)

ROCKY RIDE by Vivian Arend, felt really silly from the get-go. I got the impression immediately that the only way I was going to like Mitch or Anna was if I'd read the series this is supposed to be a spin-off of. Too much was left unexplained and I quickly found myself skimming to get through all the mentions of characters that you'd obviously have met if you were a regular reader of Arend's books. (1 star)

ALL THAT REMAINS by Lauren Dane, opens a new series and has a pretty cool set-up for a post-apocalyptic type world. I was definitely digging the world building but found myself quickly lost in the ridiculous melodrama of the menage between Hatch, Charlie, and Summer. I tried to like them, I really did. if you don't mind characters with zero chemistry getting their sexy times on you might enjoy it, but I found the lack of chemistry and wangst just grated my nerves. I might check out more from Dane because I think her world building was great but I was so glad to be rid of these characters when this story ended. (2 stars)

As sometimes happens with anthologies, I think this one is best read by readers who already like and are familiar with the work of all three authors. I think it's a MUST to have read Arend and Rocha's series these fall into to really appreciate them in particular. I hate myself for not liking this collection because I really wanted to. Instead, I'll just recommend coming to this one after you're a well established reader of these authors as a group.

Review: Hard As You Can by Laura Kaye

Hard As You Can (Hard Ink #2) by Laura Kaye
Contemporary Romance, Romantic Suspense, Military
Mass Market Paperback $5.99 (384 pages, AVON)
Ebook $4.54

Audiobook $44.99
Ever since hard-bodied, drop-dead-charming Shane McCallan strolled into the dance club where Crystal Dean works, he's shown a knack for getting beneath her defenses. For her little sister's sake, Crystal can't get too close. Until her job and Shane's mission intersect, and he reveals talents that go deeper than she could have guessed.
Shane would never turn his back on a friend in need, especially a former Special Forces teammate running a dangerous, off-the-books operation. Nor can he walk away from Crystal. The gorgeous waitress is hiding secrets she doesn't want him to uncover. Too bad. He's exactly the man she needs to protect her sister, her life, and her heart. All he has to do is convince her that when something feels this good, you hold on as hard as you can--and never let go.

Author Site: website

Rushed Romance, Fluid Plot (4 stars)

After bumping into Shane McCallan in the pages of HARD AS IT GETS, Crystal Dean helps the men of Hard Ink. Twice. During the encounter the pair feel an attraction the becomes the root of the romance for HARD AS YOU CAN. But Shane has a lot of baggage from his past that makes him both a caring kind of guy and at times, a bit of a liability to the team. If he wants to continue the mission to uncover the link between the Church gang and Frank Merritt he's going to need Crystal's help but at what cost to her?

Crystal has spent the past four years enslaved to the Church gang and Bruno, the man who is supposed to protect her. Helping Shane could put her in danger and she has to think about her younger sister's safety before crossing Bruno and the gang. Shane makes her feel safe, makes her want more for herself, and helping him would be the right thing to do... but is the price for helping him too steep?

Man did I love these two! Shane and Crystal are wonderful characters that I think most of Kaye's fans will just eat up the way I did. He's a little tortured but the kind of man who would never hurt a woman. She's willing to sacrifice all of herself to protect her sister. They're the kind of people you'd want on your side in a crisis. But I had a hard time buying their romantic progression from strangers to saying "I love you". It was VERY rushed thanks to the timeline of a handful of days and they barely had any time to get to know each other really. Sometimes that works but in this case it felt forced. If you can get past that and love a suspense plot, then that element of the book will be excellent.

As a suspense story I really enjoyed HAUC. The continued search for answers kept me rivited even when there were a lot of talking and waiting scenes to get through. Kaye has a great grasp of dialog and it was easy to  guys as real people, I felt like I was back in my Army wife days reading the quips of the guys. As the story progresses we get to know the rest of the team much more and one of my favorites, Easy, gets set up for his story (which is next in the series). There's also a big break in the mission that kind of cliff-hangers the plot in a deliciously good way and the introduction of some allies in the Raven Riders MC. (Please, please, please let Kaye do a Raven Riders series next!!!)

If you enjoy the writing of J.R. Ward, where there's romance met equally by a solid series story arc, you definitely need to be reading this series. While HAUC was a little shaky on the romance side it was still a great read that kept me engrossed and lead into the next story very well. I can hardly stand the wait for HARD TO HOLD ON TO.

Guest Post: Pan's Conquest Author Aubrie Dionne [+ giveaway!]

Dear readers, If there's one thing you know I love, it's an author who shares the awesome trait of being a geek. Whenever the chance to have Aubrie by comes I can't help but beg she talk about something she geeks about because well... because we geeks tend to have great ideas inspired by the things we obsess over that wind up finding their way into our fiction. ;) Enjoy Aubrie's list and tell us what makes you get geeky! -- Rhi

How I Know I’m a Big Time Geek

#1. I can recite every word from the original three Star War’s movies. I used to reenact the scenes in my backyard with my sister. We would fight over who got to be Princess Leia. For example, the first movie starts out with a laser battle on Princess Leia’s rebel ship. C3PO turns to R2D2 and says. “Did you hear that? They’ve shut down the main reactor. We’ll be destroyed for sure. This is madness.” Oh yeah- I’m that good.

#2. I’ve been to a Star Trek convention to get Brent Spiner’s autograph (He played the character Data for those of you who are deprived of Star Trek) and take my picture with him. While I was there, I bought a Ressikan flute- used by Captain Picard in the episode “The Inner Light” on The Next Generation. I’m going to learn how to play the same song he did. Oh yeah, and I’m going to the convention again this year. In costume. Enough said.

#3. I’d rather learn Elvish than any real language spoke on Earth today. If I could visit anywhere I want, I’d go to Rivendell, home of the elves and ask Legolas to teach me how to use a bow. I also know a few words of Klignon.

#4. I totally identify with the two main characters of the Big Bang Theory. (Even though I’m not half as smart as they are. I can’t even do geometry.)  In fact, sometimes I’m jealous of what they have- like Luke Skywalker shampoo- how cool is that?

#5. I spend my free time writing science fiction and fantasy. Sure, there’s romance, but there’s also a good dose of spaceships, sandworms, castles, magic, flutes, or mythical gods to go along with it. My latest adventure in writing was Pan’s Conquest, written about the relationship between Pan and Syrinx. I was never happy with the way it ended in Greek Mythology- having Syrinx turn herself into a reed, and then having Pan CUT the reed and make his Pan flute. What kind of a HEA (Happily Ever After) is that?? Anyway, I’ve come up with a way better ending. check it out. It’s only $.99 for a limited time!

Happy release day to HARD AS YOU CAN by Laura Kaye!

Release day is finally here! And I’m thrilled to share Hard As You Can, the second book in my Hard Ink series, with all of you here today! Hard As You Can follows the surviving members of a disgraced Army Special Forces team as they fight to regain their stolen honor, and finds their investigation crossing paths with a waitress willing to do whatever it takes to stay alive and protect her younger sister. For Shane McCallan, saving Crystal Dean is a mission he refuses to turn down.

Today, I’m super excited to share a sexy and emotional excerpt with you guys! Here we go:

“Don’t look at me like that, Crystal,” Shane said, his voice a raw scrape. It wasn’t a demand or a threat. It was a plea. And the thought that this big, strong, powerful man was begging her for anything was thrilling.
“Like what?” she asked, dragging her gaze up to his. In the diffuse light of the streetlamp, she could tell his eyes were absolutely blazing, and it only fueled the arousal rising up inside her.
“Like maybe you want me the way I want you.” Tilting his head, he nuzzled his face against hers, the tip of his nose trailing over her cheek, his breath ghosting over her lips. “Like maybe you’d let me kiss you and touch you.” A quick brush of his lips against her temple and ear. “Like maybe you’d let me in.
Crystal could barely breathe for the way her heart was pounding and her pulse was racing. She slid a hand up his chest to his neck, wanting, needing, just absolutely yearning to have this. Just this once.
Leaning into him, Crystal held his gaze and adored the way his expression filled with such expectant satisfaction, like she’d surprised him. Pleased him. She pressed her lips to his.

Excerpt:
Much to her horror, Elena felt tiny pinpricks in the corners of her eyes as they started to water up. “Why are you doing this, Gage? What do you want from me?”
He studied her a moment, watching her so intently that she felt naked from the inside out. “You.”
“Me?” she squeaked back.
“You,” he answered again with an unwavering gaze.
Trying to bolster her courage back up, Elena snapped, “I’m not an item you pick up at the store or a whore to be bought off the street. You can’t just go dragging me around where you want me, snarling ‘mine’ whenever you feel like! I’m a human being, Gage; you can’t own me!”
She expected the ornery tiger to get mad and snarl at her, instead he did something much worse. One side of his lips curled up in smug satisfaction, and the bastard smirked at her.

If music takes you on journeys of the heart... (5 stars)

Megan Miller grew up crushing on 70's rock star, Davy Morgan. Her interest in the rock scene of his era has lead her to England to attend a rock festival where she can do research for her doctoral thesis. No sooner does she arrive in Glastonbury than she winds up in an accidental confrontation with the sexy, but rude Davy Morgan look-alike in the cabin next door.

Legendarily reclusive rocker, Davy Morgan, has found a way to hide from the dark side of the music business by traveling to the future. When he meets his temporary new neighbor he has to be extra careful about keeping his true identity a secret. But when Megan incidentally follows him into the past a new path is laid before them, one that can be made or broken by the tests of time.

HOT ROCK is actually my first read from Annie Seaton. After hearing lots of good stuff about her contemporary romances I knew I was game for seeing what she could do with something a little more in the fantasy vein and she delivered very nicely. It probably helps that HOT ROCK blends two genres I love, rock star romances and time travel romances, if you like either you MUST pick this up. I was a little flummoxed on the actual mechanics of the time travel but if you can suspend disbelief well and dig seeing characters from different times finding love it's well worth a look.

Davy is kind of a jerk at first but not without a certain charm, he's got his reasons for being secretive and not wanting to live a rock star life. Megan is actually very likable though I'll admit I found the idea of her thesis to be really flimsy as her excuse for traveling halfway around the world and then not returning when her career was being threatened. They had great chemistry from the get-go though and I was really eager to see where it would lead them. I was not disappointed at all.

If you've ever thought it would be cool to travel back in time and see your favorite band perform at the height of their career or you love a great music festival I think you'll really enjoy HOT ROCK. I'm really hoping to see more Covet titles from Seaton in the future because, pardon the pun, this one rocked!

Weekend Reading [02/21-02/23] :: Friendship & Insanity

It's the weekend again. Whuuuut? Hate when it creeps up on me so fast. It's been a busy few weeks between special occasions and everyday stuff. I'm beginning to realize that as much as I like to think I'm not... I am very, very much an introvert. I'm also far more easily hurt by the things people say than I want them to know. This week an old friend made a comment that basically said that a trait I felt was becoming a bit noticeable (in a negative way) that I had made a generalized apology about, was pretty much how I had always been. And it hurt. A lot. I don't know why the friend would say it unless she didn't mean it as an insult but it certainly didn't feel like it was intended as teasing in a friendly way. :/

But this week I also received a text from a friend that thanked me for something I had said, for being supportive when she really needed it. It makes me wonder if sometimes we just need to step back and think about how someone might feel about the things we say. That same friend once owned the book featured in this photo. When she and her sibling outgrew their books from childhood their mom packed them up and sent them to my son. Now, when I read them to my daughter I get this warm fuzzy feeling because I know that these were stories once loved by someone I call my friend with the utmost sincerity.

This upcoming week is going to be insanely busy here at RhiReading and all over the web. Lots of books release next week. Goooood ones! Which means I have a lot of cramming to do this weekend even though I have a conference to attend—and teach at!—tomorrow. What hijinks are on your weekend agenda?

I've got PAN'S CONQUEST and HARD AS YOU CAN to work on. Here's hoping between my conference, a party, and life I'll get them both chowed down. :) Have a good one! -- Rhi

Review: The Art of Being Indifferent by Brooke Moss

The Art of Being Indifferent (The Twisted Family Tree #1) by Brooke Moss
Young Adult, Social Issues, Romance
Ebook $2.99 (278 pages, SELFPUBLISHED)
Posey's not the kind of girl who has a lot of friends. After bouncing from foster home to foster home she's only formed an attachment to her iPod, and the music that takes her away from the ugliness that surrounds her.
Drew Baxter's got life on a string, or so everyone thinks. Son of the town mayor, swim team champion, and the hottest guy on campus. Little does everyone know that life at Drew's home is dark, dangerous, and only getting worse.
When partnered together in a tutoring assignment from hell, Posey and Drew are surprised to find how much they have in common. Despite their need to keep what's going on under the surface a secret from the world, it becomes clear they know each other better than anyone else in the world can. Now Posey and Drew have to find a way to exist in a town that wants to keep them apart, and in a circle of classmates that wants them to stop blurring the social lines.
Above all, Drew and Posey need to escape the madness of their abusive parents, before they drag them down forever.

Cry all the tears, both sad and happy ones!  (5 stars)

I have to preface this review by noting that I've begun to feel like I might be the wrong reviewer for Moss' work. Sometimes you find an author whose work continually speaks to you, even across genres, and Moss has very much become one of those for me. I won't say I'm partial by any means, but calling myself a fangirl wouldn't be overstating my love of her books either.

THE ART OF BEING INDIFFERENT is told from the perspectives of Posey and Drew, two young adults who seem about as opposite as they could possibly be. He's the handsome jock with a rich dad, she's the unwanted teenager bouncing around the foster system waiting to "age out". But when a teacher steps in and pushes them to work together to make their Lit grades passable, they evolve from hating one another to realizing they have a lot in common. The rest is a jumble of relationship struggles as they try to make their feelings work under pressure from their peers and the adults who make their lives a living hell.

When I first began reading I was really nervous about Posey. She's angry and almost venomous and for very good reasons. She and Drew seem like they'll be impossible to bring together because they're both very set in who they are. But as the story goes on they slowly warm to one another finding common ground and ultimately romance. I did feel like there was a bit of a jump from pure hate to a well-maybe-they're-okay attitude, as if there were a missing chapter early in the story but aside from that I found the romance to be an enjoyable aspect of the plot.

What mattered more to me than the romance though, was Posey's growth from the volatile foster kid she is at the start of the book. Having experience with abusive and neglectful parents and some knowledge of the foster system I was moved to tears more than once as Posey's issues were laid bare. But my empathy for her hurts was joined by hope and longing as she struggled with her feelings about being adopted by her foster family. I fell in love with the Coulters who reminded me very much of families I had known in my childhood and there were tears for them too because of their unconditional love.

TAOBI isn't without a few flaws but it's raw and emotive and for those of us lucky enough to have ties to the state it takes place in, very, very real. There were some chuckles to temper the moments I was choked up and a visceral need for Posey to find the love—both familial and romantic—she deserves. And if you're reading this review I beg one favor of you, should you choose to read TAOBI... please read the acknowledgements. As a fan I was aware of the author's own experience but was even more moved by the story (stupid tears, stop already!) having that glimpse into the roots, nay... the heart... of this one.

And each more than capable of standing on her own two feet.
None are looking for a man. But whether because of lust, greed or duty, each woman finds herself in a forbidden bed with the one man
capable of crashing through her defenses and taking her—both physically and emotionally—to her breaking point and beyond.
It’s a dangerous game—and what’s at stake is everything.

Book One - Wanted-
He is everything I crave, all I desperately want—and he is everything I can’t have.
Evan Black embodies my every fantasy. He is brilliant, fierce, and devastatingly handsome. But he is also headstrong, dangerous, and burdened with secrets.
My family warned me to stay away, that I could never handle Evan’s dark dealings or scarred past. Maybe I should have listened. Maybe I should have run. But our desire is undeniable, and some temptations you just can’t fight.
And from the moment we touch—the passion between us consuming us both—I know that I will never be the same.

                                     Book Two- Heated -
I know better than to trust him, that I should never risk my heart.
But fierce passion comes at a high price.
I grew up believing in right and wrong, good and evil, black and white—that there were some boundaries that could never be crossed. And then I met Tyler Sharp.
Bold, charming, and dangerously sexy, Tyler always gets what he wants. But his smile can be deceiving, his dealings sordid, his ambitions ruthless. I thought I was the one woman strong enough to resist him, but our need for each other is too urgent to deny.
One look and I’m in trouble. One touch and I’m hooked. One night and I’m his. And once I fall, there’s no going back.

Blog Tour: Review of Such Sweet Sorrow by Jenny Trout [+ giveaway!]

Dear readers, If you've followed me for very long you know I have a tiny soft spot for retellings of classic tales. You may have also read my review of American Vampire which I might be the lone lover of. So when I found out that Jenny Trout was in fact Jennifer Armintrout—not to be confused with Jennifer Armentrout!!!—I was very eager to read SUCH SWEET SORROW. I really hate posting reviews as part of a blog tour because it messes up my default review format but for this one I caved a little... please check it out and let me know in the comments if you love or hate Shakespeare! -- Rhi

Such Sweet Sorrow by Jenny Trout
Young Adult, Classic Retelling, Fantasy
Paperback $8.99 (304 pages, ENTANGLED TEEN)
Ebook 99¢

Never was there a tale of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo...
But true love never dies. Though they're parted by the veil between the world of mortals and the land of the dead, Romeo believes he can restore Juliet to life, but he'll have to travel to the underworld with a thoroughly infuriating guide.
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, may not have inherited his father's crown, but the murdered king left his son a much more important responsibility---a portal to the Afterjord, where the souls of the dead reside. When the determined Romeo asks for help traversing the treacherous Afterjord, Hamlet sees an opportunity for adventure and the chance to avenge his father's death.
In an underworld filled with leviathan monsters, ghoulish shades, fire giants, and fierce Valkyrie warriors, Hamlet and Romeo must battle their way through jealousy, despair, and their darkest fears to rescue the fair damsel. Yet finding Juliet is only the beginning, and the Afterjord doesn't surrender souls without a price...

Parting is... (4 stars)

What if...? Complete that sentence with a game changing idea for one of your favorite classics... or two. That's a bit of what Jenny Trout has done with Romeo & Juliet and Hamlet in SUCH SWEET SORROW. Imagine the poison hadn't actually killed Romeo and he woke to find that Juliet was truly dead and beyond his reach. What would he do? Well, I certainly wouldn't anticipate this particular chain of events but it makes for one heck of a story!

After the death of his father, Hamlet is aggrieved to discover that the specters he has seen his whole life have been seen for a reason. Tasked with protecting a portal to the Afterjord, the Dane prince has more than revenging his father's murder on his mind. But when Hamlet crosses paths with an Italian who seeks the place the seat of a murdered king he realizes there's so much more at work. Together they will brave the mythological underworld to find Romeo's Juliet only to discover that finding her is the easiest part of their journey.

I'm never a big fan of stories that gloss over (or change) the fact that Romeo and Juliet were very, very young but if you're going to do it, make it for a good reason. For SSS it works enough I could let it slide, I'm not the target audience after all. Being less familiar with Hamlet I can't make much commentary regarding elements of it that may bug readers. I did, however, really enjoy seeing these iconic characters being matched up to take on a quest. It's very original and well paced.

The only major issue I had with the story that continually bothered me was Juliet. I just felt like her characterization was a bit all over the place. One minute she's kind of pathetic and mopey, then she's fierce. I never really felt like she was consistent and ultimately was really meh with where the story leads her.

If you enjoy retellings and mythology you will very likely find SSS an interesting and fun read. If you're an adult and not the target audience I think you'd also enjoy it if you're a fan of Trout's adult romance work under her other penname.
