Reality is only an illusion.
Except for those who can control it…
Worst. Birthday. Ever.
My first boyfriend dumped me—happy birthday, Josie!—my dad is who knows where, I have some weird virus that makes me want to hurl, and now my ex is licking another girl’s tonsils. Oh, and I’m officially the same age as my brother was when he died. Yeah, today is about as fun-filled as the swamps of Dagobah. But then weird things start happening…
Like I make something materialize just by thinking about it.
When hottily-hot badass Reid Wentworth shows up on a motorcycle, everything changes. Like, everything. Who I am. My family. What really happened to my brother. Existence. I am Oculi, and I have the ability to change reality with my thoughts. Now Reid, in all his hotness, is charged with guiding and protecting me as I begin learning how to bend reality. And he’s the only thing standing between me and the secret organization that wants me dead…

Fandom humor & an excellent heroine make this a great read! (4 stars)
Josie is having a really, really bad 17th birthday when Reid Wentworth rolls up on his motorcycle. But things are about to get a heck of a lot worse as she finds out that she's not exactly normal... and neither are her family. She's an Oculi and can manipulate reality with her mind which puts her on a short list for a secret organization that wants to kill her. It's up to Reid to train her how to use her Oculi abilities before the bad guys find her.
Insert lots of fangirly squealing here because I think I just found a new favorite author! I loves me some scifi teen angst and Kuper has the foundation of what I hope is going to be a wild ride ready to go. That said, I kind of had some character issues that kept me from quite loving it. I didn't quite buy Reid and I think some of that was the alternating perspective narration (which I tend to dislike in romance) giving me a side of him I didn't like. Josie on the other hand is one of my favorite YA heroines yet! If you're a nerdy girl you will want to be her BFF as much as I did. I found her very relatable and likable.
The world building is pretty good but left me very much wanting more and more. So many questions left unanswered! If you enjoy books with pseudo-science hinged plots and worlds like Jus Accardo's Denizen or the X-Men you have to pick this up and devour it. The Star Wars and Big Bang Theory (and many other fandoms, too) humor were great touches and are sure to please your inner geek.
My little issues with Reid aside I really enjoyed ANOMALY and will definitely be all over anything else Kuper writes. If you like worlds with supernatural elements, geeky humor, and the kind of set-up that will have you anxious to find out when the next book is releasing please give this one a read!
