Review: The Crystal Slipper by Selena Fulton

The Crystal Slipper by Selena Fulton
Fantasy Romance, Fairytale Retelling
Ebook (222 pages, ENTANGLED COVET)
A paranormal category romance from Entangled's Covet imprint...
Sometimes you just have to believe...
A single crystal slipper. It was probably the weirdest gift librarian Celinda Branham ever received during a Christmas gift exchange. Who would even wear these in the real world? Not Celinda, wearer of sensible shoes and fairy tale naysayer. That said, she certainly has the requisite wicked stepmother, irritating stepsister, and empty bank account. Of course, if she actually believed in all that fantastical junk, she could wait for her Prince Charming...
Only Prince Charming doesn't exist.
But Preston Chandler believes in fairy tales. Oh, does he ever. All he did was spurn the advances of a certain witch, and now his sister is under a sleeping spell. And the only way to break it? Find the other glass slipper and give someone "Love's First Kiss." But when Preston finally tracks down Celinda, he's dismayed to discover that the shy librarian who owns the other shoe has no interest in anything remotely resembling magic—including love. Now he must find a way into his Cinderella's cynical heart, or lose his sister... and his only chance for true love.

A pleasant mishmash of Fairytale elements (4 stars)

When Preston Chandler spurned the love of a novice witch he found out the hard way that fairy tales are real. In pursuit of a pair of legendary glass shoes that will hopefully undo the curse placed on his sister he will go to any lengths to save her. Celinda Branham doesn't believe in fairy tales but when a gorgeous, wealthy man comes looking for the weird crystal slipper she got in a holiday white elephant gift exchange she might just change her mind.

While I'm usually a huge sucker for fairytale retellings I have to admit this one was a tough sell. Celinda has no backbone which never puts me on the right foot with a heroine but then Preston just kind of proves to be just as lunk-headed as every Disney hero, bulldozering over her constantly. Here have a gift, oh gee have another super expensive gift, I need you to fall in love with me so I'm gonna buy you... forget the gifts I'm just gonna buy you. I'm not a fan of that at all. But, beyond their character flaws that make them hard to like, it's actually an enjoyable story. I liked the twists on the classic, with the stepmother and stepsiblings. The witch part was a little meh because she felt too cartoony but it gave room for the riddles and time-sensitive pressure for Preston to break the spell.

While I didn't quite love it, I did like it enough that I feel confident recommending it. If you're a bit more old-fashioned in your taste in heroes and like them to shower the heroine with gifts you'll probably really enjoy it. It's not quite as solid as a retelling as many others I've read but I think retelling fans should still give it a read.
