Review: Forbidden Kiss by Shannon Leigh

Forbidden Kiss by Shannon Leigh
Paranormal Romance, Classic Retelling
Ebook (200 pages, COVET)
Jule Casale is the perfect daughter. Obedient. Trustworthy. Loyal. With her high profile Italian family, her public image must be impeccable. And now to gain the respect and position she's desired in the academic world, she hopes to discover the unknown artist behind a masterpiece of Renaissance art.
Rom Montgomery seeks the unobtainable: forgiveness. Those who could grant him relief are dead. Instead, he wanders across continents and through time searching for salvation and the means to right an ancient wrong. But when Jule comes knocking on his door, it's the closest he's ever come to finally finding redemption.
The closer Rom draws to correcting his past mistakes, the more his secrets threaten to destroy the woman who might hold the key to his future.

While this would usually be my thing... (2 stars)

When I think of Covet titles I usually know what to expect. A solid romance with a paranormal element that plays second fiddle but still manages to hold its own. So naturally, when I read the blurb for FORBIDDEN KISS I went in expecting to find something a little more paranormal about it and I'm almost embarrassed to admit I did not catch the allusion to Shakespeare off of it. While I feel like that is a bit of a spoiler so many other reviewers are saying it enough I think it's just my own oversight.

Alas, as much as I wanted to like it as a fan of Romeo and Juliet retellings I just could not connect with the story. Rom and Jule were interesting on the surface but went about as deep as the original infamous duo. Leigh plays a bit fast and loose with this one making Rom immortal and Jule his Juliet reincarnated. I've seen this type of story done really well in the past and yet this one felt flat and one dimensional.

Perhaps FORBIDDEN KISS just wasn't for me, I think most of us can admit that happens to us from time to time and I almost DNF'd this one. I think this will appeal more to romantic suspense fans who like the idea of chasing down artifacts to reunite lovers. The bits with Jule and Rom trying to find the paintings were the only parts that managed to hold my interest I just found it draggy and—I can't believe I'm saying this in a review—boring.
