Weekend Reading [08/29-09/01] :: In which I rag on genre division... and gender division too.

I know a lot of you readers who visit are pretty much romance-only readers and that's cool but if you ever read something else what genre do you go to?

See... I've always thought romance shouldn't be its own genre. To me it should be a sub-genre of others. Yeah, I hear your outraged gasps but hear me out, please.

While fiction is certainly an escape I feel like romance is only a part of a broader story IRL and that when I get into the shelves at a book store or library that's what I would rather see. I think romance as a its own genre is just stupid because it takes something that's a part of other things and just forces it to be something separate. (I hope that makes sense). I think if it was just a sub-genre of other genres it wouldn't get looked down on as much.

"Oh hey I was just reading a great epic fantasy last weekend you should totally try it. The sister mages are trying to find a portal to the underworld."
"Yeah? I'm working on a fantasy romance and the characters are on this quest that's really bringing them together when they started off as enemies. Loving it!"

That's the kind of conversations I want to be having when I'm an old lady. Don't see it happening but it's just like the reason I feel like the term 'women's fiction' is wretched. I hate the idea of things (and books in this discussion) being forced into pigeon-holes that claim a gender bias.

Yeah, my mind has been on gender and feminism a lot this week. Sorry for going there for this weekend's weekend reading but it ties into the book I'm starting this weekend.

You see... I hate the way gender plays into the marketing of scifi and fantasy stuff. I've always been super girly-girl and yet very boyish at the same time so it should come as no surprise that my own daughter is the same. So I'm perfectly okay to wear ripped jeans and beat up sneakers with a super girly top and makeup. Which is one reason I get so frustrated when it's nearly impossible to find Star Wars stuff geared toward girls. I want shit to reflect my nerdy passions without sacrificing my feminine side's craving for pretty things. (I know I'm not the only one either).

Even the marketing for Tuesday's A NEW DAWN has felt pretty dude focused. I was honestly surprised I got approved for the ARC. In fact, if I'm completely honest I wouldn't even be a romance reader or blogger or probably even a mom if I hadn't been loaned a Star Wars book when I was a teenager. My love of SW grew out of what's known as the Expanded Universe and lead to me connecting with the people I'm closest to in my life, including Mr. Rhi. So here's hoping that with a new trilogy of films in the works, the new cartoon series, and so on... maybe they'll start marketing smarter and giving female fans merchandise that features female characters.

Anywho, I had best be off if I plan on brushing my hair before I go hang with our Friday night nerd bunch. I've been juggling RL stuff and blog stuff for the next week and somehow the evening has crept up on me, darnit. I'll be looking to see what you're reading over the weekend (a long one if you're a fellow US reader) so please leave me a comment on what you're reading and feel free to trash my thoughts according to your own opinion on romance as a stand-alone genre. ;) -- Rhi

In this dazzling, sensual novel, Dianne Duvall beckons readers into a world of vampires, immortals, and humans with extraordinary gifts . . . where passion can last forever, if you're willing to pay the price . . .

Once, Sarah Bingham’s biggest challenge was making her students pay attention in class. Now, after rescuing a wounded stranger, she’s landed in the middle of a battle between corrupt vampires and powerful immortals who also need blood to survive. Roland Warbrook is the most compelling man Sarah has ever laid hands on. But his desire for her is mingled with a hunger he can barely control . . .

In his nine centuries of immortal existence, no woman has tempted Roland as much as Sarah. But asking her to love him is impossible -- when it mean forfeiting the world she’s always known, and the life he would do anything to protect.

Dianne Duvall portrays a world of temptation, loyalty, and heartbreak . . . a world where danger and desire walk hand in hand . . .

Ami isn't much for trusting strangers. She has a hard time trusting anyone. But she's no coward, and she's no pushover in the protection department either. So when she comes across a mysterious warrior taking on eight deranged vampires on his own, she doesn't hesitate to save his bacon. Of course, that was before she realized what one little rescue would get her into . . .

Marcus Grayden has been an immortal protector of humanity for eight hundred years, and at the moment he's not interested in backup. From the moment Ami arrives in his life, he can't deny that she's strong, smart, and extremely skilled at watching his back. But she's also destroying his protective solitude and stirring desires he can't bear to awaken. After all, whatever her secrets — how can she defeat death itself?

Dianne Duvall lures readers into a world of romance and suspense, where love can mean the difference between life and death . . .

Dr. Melanie Lipton is no stranger to the supernatural. She knows immortals better than they know themselves, right down to their stubborn little genes. So although a handsome rogue immortal seems suspicious to her colleagues, Sebastien Newcombe intrigues Melanie. His history is checkered, his scars are impressive, and his ideas are daring. But it's not his ideas that have Melanie fighting off surges of desire . . .

Bastien is used to being the bad guy. In fact, he can't remember the last time he had an ally he could trust. But Melanie is different — and under her calm, professional exterior he senses a passion beyond anything in his centuries of experience. Giving in to temptation is out of the question — he can't put her in danger. But she isn't asking him . . .

Dianne Duvall returns to the world of the Immortal Guardians, where danger — and desire — make every decision count . . .

Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires. Her "special abilities" aren't much, but the plan is simple — she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in. Then her shoto swords come out and it's bye-bye, bloodsucker. Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally. He’s a vampire, all right, but different. Mysterious. Handsome. And more interested in saving her skin than draining it.

Étienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years — long enough to know that Krysta is special. He can't stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords. Then he discovers the vamps she's exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger, too. He'll have to accept Krysta's help to save them. The stakes for a mortal are high. But the cost to his heart might be higher . . .

GUARDIAN Synopsis:

Sometimes, things that go bump in the night are real.

My name is Whitney Lane. I’m sixteen years old and at first, I thought I was crazy. I kept seeing shadows move along walls, and hearing whispers around corners, but whenever I looked, there was never anything there. Until one day, there was. Our world isn’t what we think. There are things around us, good things, bad things, scary things. Things that we tell ourselves aren’t real, but they are. They’re very real, and they’re terrifying. I’ve been swept up now, in a battle of good and evil, confused about love and what is supposed to be love, but isn’t. I don’t know what to think anymore. I can’t trust my emotions and I don’t know what is true. There’s only one thing I know for sure. Nothing is what it seems.

  Guardian Available now

Sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real.
Happy birthday to me.
I close my eyes and burrow into my pillow as I try to sleep, as I try to escape this life.
It’s a life I never thought I’d have, a life I most certainly don’t want.
I’m still feeling sorry for myself as the blackness of sleep finally overtakes me.
I don’t know what time it is when I shoot straight upward like a rocket.  Something had yanked me from the oblivion of sleep, something loud and shrill scraping my window.
My room is completely dark and I glanceat my clock in confusion.
3:00 a.m.
As my heart pounds hard against my ribcage, I quickly scan every corner of the room.
In the last few hours, dark shadows had migrated onto my pink walls, but they’re familiar, nothing out of the ordinary, although in the night, they seem twisted and scary.
I remain motionless as I allow the sleep-induced fog to clear from my brain.
As I sit, I feel common sense and logic slowly returning.
Of course nothing had touched my window because my bedroom is on the second floor. Nothing can reach it.  And there are no trees near enough to brush against it.  It was just a dream.
It was only a dream.
I chant it silently to myself like a mantra as I consciously slow my breathing down, hoping that my racing pulse will soon follow. It was only a dream.
But just as I’m calming down, I hear it again.
A high-pitched shrill shriek, reminiscent of fingernails on a chalkboard, scraping down my window. I gasp and pull my feet up to my chest, which is when I notice the temperature.
I notice because I can see my breath.
Timidly, I blow a puff out again, watching the way my breath turns white in the air.
Holy crap.  Oh my God.
What the hell?
The sound stops and stillness surrounds me once again, the silence so loud that it echoes in my ear.
Nothing moves around me, the shadows are perfectly still as they twist across my wall.  They look like mangled fingers and arms and legs, but they don’t move.
My legs are weak and shaking, but I know I have to move.   I have to move off my bed because it feels like something is under it.  Something terrifying.
With a leap, I bound across the room, my feet hitting the floor several feet away from the edge of my bed.
The floor is ice cold, as though it had been covered in a blanket of snow.
I’m trembling as I race to the far wall and check the thermostat.  Because that’s the only explanation.  I must’ve bumped it earlier, I must’ve turned the AC way down.
But the luminous numbers stare at me in contradiction.
74 degrees.
It must be broken.  It has to be broken.
My breath is coming in pants now, terrified, anxious pants.
My fear isn’t logical.  I know there’s nothing here.  I’m the only one in this room.
Or am I?
The air seems to push at me from all around, something dark, something heavy, something real.  Something unseen.
My fingers shake, my legs tremble, and then all of a sudden, they can no longer support my weight.  I go down like a pile of bricks, collapsing onto the floor.  I lie still because I can’t move, because something seems to sit on my chest, holding me down.
The shadows start to move, to slither across the walls, to reach and pull and dance.
I struggle to focus, to see what it is.
But all I can see are the numbers on the thermostat suddenly moving, rapidly counting down from 74 to 20.
Twenty degrees?
The air is frigid as I suck it in, as I try to pull the ice crystals into my mouth so I can breathe.
All of a sudden, there’s a blackness in front of me.  It hovers over me, a shapeless mass, sucking in the cells of the air, the atoms and the molecules.  It’s darker than the blackness of my room, blacker than the blackest black.
Something is here.
With me.
“Dad?” I whisper in a white puff.  Because what else could it be?
I reach out a finger to touch it, and then I can’t see anything else, because the darkness of it surrounds me, bleeding into everything else, even my vision.   The shriek is back, screaming into my ears, bleeding into my brain.
Then there’s nothing.

If you like an element of suspense... (4 stars)

I like to call myself Covet's biggest fan. Since the imprint launched I have read them all. But LONE WOLFE PROTECTOR is the first one that had me head-scratching whether it really belonged under the imprint. Romantic suspense is so not my genre but I do enjoy a good mystery element which LWP really delivers on. I honestly can't elaborate on what ultimately made me decide it wasn't well suited to the imprint without spoiling the story but if you're not usually into paranormal romance this might be a good one to check out.

In spite of this not really satisfying my PNR hankering I did enjoy it. Wolfe Creek is one creepy place and the mystery, while I had it figured out pretty quick, makes for an anxious read. Koda and his brother Zane are rather opposite figures but I really liked them and was kinda wishing for more of a love-triangle element. Not to be though, as a possible love interest for Zane gets involved in the plot and I like her too.

While it wasn't a mind-blowing read, I liked it as a series starter and am looking forward to diving into more of the Wolfe Creek mysteries and hopefully finding out about the mysterious family curse. If you're in the mood for a transition read to carry you from one genre to another I think this one will be a satisfying place to get started.

5 Sexiest Things romance heroes can say or do.

We all have what we classify as sexy. I’m no different. Things that make me go “whew!” in a book are things that also make me go “whew!” in real life. A heated glance, instinctive behavior and manly activities all set the heart racing. Here are some of my favorites.

1) A Protective Instinct. This can range from stepping in front of the heroine to put himself between her and danger to simply taking her hand without thought while crossing the road. Any time that protective streak comes out in the hero I love it! I’ve been known to go back and re-read these scenes over and over again.

2) Domination. When a hero suddenly scoops up the heroine, or presses her against the wall, or snatches her around the neck and kisses her or…or…or…yeah, you get my drift. More please.

3) Cooking. I love a well-written cooking scene. The image it brings to mind is hot-as-hell too. Think about it…a sinfully sexy man standing behind a stove, cooking YOU dinner. Hot. Hot. Hot.

4) Fixing Something. Especially if his shirt is OFF and he’s hammering something. Muscles flexing. Sweat glistening. That look of concentration on his face. Whew, doggie! One reason I love scenes like this is because the hero is usually completely unaware of the sexiness he is exuding at the time. I mean he’s in man mode. He’s fixing stuff. We are completely in the heroine’s point-of-view and the eye-candy that is described is so yummy.

5) “You’re mine.” I love reading it. I love hearing it. The possessive phrase sends goosebumps everywhere.
What is your favorite?

Book Blitz: SEVEN SONS by Lili St. Germain [Excerpt + giveaway!]

Title: Seven Sons
Series: Gypsy Brothers #1
Author: Lili St. Germain
Release Date: January 2, 2014

My father was most certainly NOT an innocent man. As the leader of the Gypsy Brothers MC, he was guilty of many things. But he died for a crime that he didn’t commit, framed by an enemy within who then stole his club and everything he had ever worked to protect.

Including my innocence.

When Dornan Ross framed my father, he set into motion a series of events that could never be undone. My father was murdered by Dornan Ross and his sons when I was fifteen years old.

Before my father died, Dornan Ross and his seven sons stole my innocence, branded my skin and in doing so, ensured that their lives would be prematurely cut short. That they would suffer.

I’ve just turned twenty-one, and I’m out for blood. I'm out for revenge.

But I didn't expect to fall for Jase, the youngest brother in the club.

I didn't expect that he would turn my world upside down, yank my heart out of my chest and ride away into the sunset with it.

Now, I'm faced with an impossible choice - Jase, or avenging my fathers death?

The first time I tried to kill myself, I swallowed a bottle of pain pills from his grandmother’s bathroom cupboard. It didn’t work. I woke up and I was still alive.
Elliot begged me to promise I’d never do it again. I did, and then the next day, I hooked up a hose to the exhaust of his car, locked the garage, and waited for sweet release.
Of course, he found me. Cut through the garage door with an ax and saved my sorry ass.
The third time, I was so pathetically obvious that he found me in the bath before I’d even had a chance to drag the razor blade down my wrists.
After the third time, he left. Because I was darkness, and he was sinking inside that darkness, and every time he tried to pull me out, I’d hold him under with me.
I understood. His life had revolved around saving my life for three whole years, and he couldn’t save me anymore.
“I have nothing left to give you,” is what he said, before he climbed into his car and drove away.
It was only after he’d left me that I realized I had been going about things all wrong.
That it wasn’t forgiveness and forgetting that my soul truly craved.
Once I set my sights on vengeance, life made perfect sense.
But by then, it was too late for Elliot and me. Our time was up. He was already with another girl, his baby in her belly.
So I stayed in Nebraska and learned to dance, and dreamed of my revenge.

Lili writes dark, disturbing romance. Her #1 bestselling Gypsy Brothers series was created in a serial format - quick, intense episodes released frequently with some wicked cliffhangers. The Gypsy Brothers series focuses on a morally bankrupt biker gang and the girl who seeks her vengeance upon them. The Cartel series is a prequel trilogy of full-length novels that explores the beginnings of the club, to be released in 2015 by HarperCollins.
Lili quit corporate life to focus on writing and so far is loving every minute of it. Her other loves in life include her gorgeous husband and beautiful daughter, good coffee, Tarantino movies and spending hours on Pinterest.
She loves to read almost as much as she loves to write.
