Blog Tour: NIGHT CHILD by Lisa Kessler [Guest Post + giveaway!]

Hi everyone –

Thanks for having me back on the blog, Rhianna, and I love the topic you suggested!

Music was my first love before I discovered how much I enjoyed writing, so it’s not a huge surprise that music inspires me while I’m writing each book and often works its way into my plotlines. Now that we’re coming to the end of the Night Series, Rhianna suggested I might share some of the music behind the Night Series books.

I have a few songs that are on every Night Series book playlist. They inspire me to enter into the world of my immortals and help ground me right back into the mood of these books. One of those series songs is “Who Wants to Live Forever” by Queen. It forever makes me think of my Night Walkers.

“But touch my tears with your lips
Touch my world with your fingertips
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is ours today…”

Living forever is a fascinating concept, and I enjoy figuring out how each character deals with it, so that song really keeps me in the zone with my immortals.

Before I start a new book I build the playlist, songs that will help me keep the tone and theme of the book solid and inspire me to settle in and write. I’ve also discovered, most of my playlists end up with a love song for the couple, and sometimes a theme song for one or both of the main characters.

Night Walker’s playlist had lots of tracks from the Mask of Zorro soundtrack. Calisto was Spanish and the flamenco on the soundtrack helped me keep that flavor. Calisto and Kate had two love themes on the playlist. “I Want to Spend my Lifetime Loving You” from the Mask of Zorro and “Come What May” from Moulin Rouge.

“Save the night, save the day
Save the love, come what may
Love is worth everything we pay
I want to spend my lifetime loving you
If that is all in life I ever do.”

Night Thief took place in 1840 in France with Kane and Rita. He takes her to see La Fille du Regiment, an opera that opened in Paris that year, so I have a few songs from that opera, but there are two songs that stick out on the playlist. Rita’s theme song for Kane was “Seduces Me” by Celine Dion. I’m not a huge Celine fan, but this song is so sexy and it’s exactly how Rita felt about Kane.

“Your most innocent kiss
Or your sweetest caress
Seduces me.”
If you’ve read Night Thief, Kane had some immortal swagger for sure, and the seduction of Rita was big. But his theme song for her was “Living in the Shadows” by Linda Eder. Rita was a thief by night with trust issues. Every time this song played, I felt Kane’s love for her and his desire to show her that he was not a monster.

“Wandering in the darkness
Living every midnight
Doesn't ever rid night
Of nightmares as a love might.”

Night Demon took place mostly deep in the Yucatan jungle, so I had a few songs from the Apocalypto sound track. They had a lot of jungle noises and Mayan and Aztec chanting. It helped me keep Zafrina’s mystical Mayan magic going as I wrote.

But the main theme in this book was the undercurrent of Lukas’s torment. He couldn’t forgive himself for the past and as the book opens he’s still searching for a way to kill a Night Walker so that he can finally leave this world, but as he unravels that mystery he also finds himself falling in love with Gretchen. His torture was perfectly brought out and inspired by “If I Can’t Love Her” from Beauty & the Beast…

“No pain could be deeper
No life could be cheaper
No point anymore, if I can't love her
No spirit could win me
No hope left within me
Hope I could have loved her and that she'd set me free
But it's not to be
If I can't love her
Let the world be done with me.”

Gretchen on the other hand, refused to let Lukas fade away…  Her theme was “Falling Slowly” by Linda Eder.

“Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won.”

Night Angel brought us Colin and Juliana over in Ireland. I’m a HUGE fan of Celtic music so it was a treat to add some Gaelic songs and folk music from Ireland. But Colin was my first Night Walker that was ever permanently injured. This colored every move as his confidence in his abilities to protect others was shaken. Juliana became his angel, and the love song for them became “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan.

“In the arms of the angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear”
Since Colin’s spirit animal was a hawk, the lyrics meant even more to me as I wrote. And when Juliana struggled for life, “Remember Me” from Josh Groban inspired me and came to really represent their love.

When your dreams have ended
Time can be transcended
Just remember me
I am the one star that keeps burning
So brightly
It is the last light
To fade into the rising sun
I'm with you whenever you tell
My story
For I am all I've done
I will still be here
As long as you hold me
In your own memory
Remember me
I am that one voice in the cold wind
That whispers
And if you listen
You'll hear me call across the sky
As long as I still can reach out
And touch you
That I will never die.”

And finally we get to Night Child. If you’ve read the book than you already know this one was high emotion and high stakes. The final book. I can’t tell you how many times I cried while I wrote it. Issa and Muriah broke my heart and put it back together a few times while I wrote it, and the playlist reflected all the passion and heartbreak.

At the opening of the book, Muriah is a free-spirit, commitment-phobe. She finds herself on a dangerous mission to find a relic, and she gets paired with Issa who isn’t that great at communicating with lowly humans. He used to make her SO frustrated! LOL  So for the first half of the book this was her theme for Issa… “Who Made You King of Anything?” by Sara Bareilles.

“I hate to break it to you babe
But I'm not drowning
There's no one here to save
Who cares if you disagree? You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So, you dare tell me who to be
Who died and made you king of anything?”

As the book moved on and Muriah kept dragging Issa back into the world of the living, Issa’s theme song for Muriah became “I Will Love You” by Fisher. If you’ve never heard it before, run listen. It’s quiet and so powerful. Here’s the part that screamed the depth of Issa’s love.

“And I need to know
Will you stay for all time?
Forever and a day
Then I'll give my heart
'Til the end of all time
Forever and a day
'Til the storms fill my eyes
And we touch the last time
I will love you, love you.”

The Night Child playlist also has a few versions of Somewhere Over the Rainbow since Muriah was a Wizard of Oz junkie. If you’ve never heard Mandy Patinkin sing it, you should definitely go listen! SO beautiful and different!

Okay, so what was the love theme for Night Child? It a gorgeous song called “Lovers” from the House of Flying Daggers soundtrack. Kathleen Battle sings it and it’s haunting and EPIC just like I wanted Night Child to be. Here’s a piece…

“Oh, where are you?
I need to tell you I still love you
So I reach out for you
You fly around me like a butterfly
Your voice still echoes in my heart
You are my true love.”

So there are the highlights of the music behind the Night Series! I hope you’ll check out some of the songs and see what you think? Do they make you think of the characters like they do me? J

I hope you’ve enjoyed the series! Thanks SO much for telling your friends about it and helping the Night Walkers find an audience… Without you, they’d just be words on a page.
