The Lost Love of a Soldier
This novella tells the story of secondary characters from The
Illicit Love of a Courtesan
Rupert Stanforth, Earl of Morton, is exasperated by his sister's choice
of friend. Meredith Divine, clings, using Rowena's plain appearance as a foil for
her auburn curls and fuller figure. He would break the friendship, but the more
he complains the more time the girls spend together. Ceasing his disagreement,
he hopes the friendship will die, believing Meredith will take a wrong-step
soon...

Meredith clings to her only friend, Lady Rowena Stanforth,
despite the disgusted looks thrown by Rowena's proud, judgemental brother. Lord
Morton cannot abide Meredith because of her low standing but Meredith's heart favours
him... then in his single act of kindness, Meredith grasps an opportunity she
cannot resist...

Capturing the Earl’s Love Excerpt

Lord Rupert Stanforth, Earl of Morton, watched his sister, Rowena, approach.

She was smiling, and her friend, Meredith Divine, clung to her arm.

His gaze briefly passed over the other girl. He was increasingly convinced Miss Divine only kept Rowena as a friend because Rowena was the perfect foil to show off Miss Divine’s more striking looks. Her auburn curls glowed in the candlelight beside Rowena’s lacklustre, light-brown locks.

Miss Divine was also slightly taller, and a little fuller in the bust.

While they crossed the room, she appeared to press as close as she could to Rowena’s side, letting Rowena’s less impressionable looks make Miss Divine’s stand out among the white-clad debutantes in the ballroom.

“Rupert...”

His eyes focused on his sister once more. She was out of breath, having just completed a country dance, and her cheeks were flushed, while her eyes glowed, expressing the fun she was having.

“I want to introduce Meredith to Ellen. Will you escort us and do the honours? Meredith is dying to meet her.”

Mmm, now what is this little game? He glanced at Miss Divine only to receive a very bright but subtly restrained smile.

She was trying to win his approval.

He was not interested. He wished nothing to do with the little schemer. Her father was in some sort of trade. Rupert had not even wished Rowena to befriend Miss Divine, let alone become so thick with her. The two of them were inseparable; or rather, Miss Divine hung about Rowena like a moth around a flame. Except Miss Divine was no moth. Her beauty was far too vibrant.

Rupert was Rowena’s guardian. Their father had passed on long ago, so Rupert was responsible for keeping his sister safe. It fell to him to help her choose her friends wisely. Yet the more he disparaged Miss Divine, the more Rowena favoured the girl. He’d ceased his complaints. Their friendship had still blossomed. He’d hoped it would wither and die back. It had not—yet.

He expected Miss Divine to make a wrong step soon though, one which would open his sister’s eyes, and end this arm-in-arm behavior.

A rush of pain and longing spilled from Katherine's heart into her limbs. It was so long since she'd seen John but her reaction was the same as it had been more than half-a-dozen years before. She loved him, secretly, without hope, but a chasm of years and status stood between them.

About the Author

Jane is a writer of authentic, passionate and emotional Historical and New Adult Romance, and a Kindle top 25 bestselling author.

She began her first historical novel at sixteen, but a life full of adversity derailed her as she lives with the restrictions of Ankylosing Spondylitis.

When she finally completed a novel it was because she was determined not to reach forty still saying, I want to write.

Now Jane is writing a Regency series and contemporary, new adult, stories and she is thrilled to be giving her characters life in others' imaginations at last.

You might think that Jane was inspired to write by Jane Austen, especially as she lives near Bath in the United Kingdom, but you would be wrong. Jane's favourite author is Anya Seton, and the book which drew her into the bliss of falling into historical imagination was 'Katherine' a story crafted from reality.

Jane has drawn on this inspiration to discover other real-life love stories, reading memoirs and letters to capture elements of the past, and she uses them to create more realistic plots.

'Basically I love history and I am sucker for a love story. I love the feeling of falling in love; it's wonderful being able to do it time and time again in fiction.'

Double Cover Reveal: ONE RIDE and FOREVER RIDE by Chelsea Camaron

We are so excited to share with you not one, but two new covers from author Chelsea Camaron's Hellions Ride contemporary romance series!

Guest Post: RECIPE FOR SEDUCTION author, Gina Gordon [Blog Tour + giveaway!]

Dear readers,

I'm an idiot. When I signed up for this tour I said something along the lines of "I'm Rhianna and I'm awesome and I know Gina and I'll get with her and ask her about topics because we're such great pals"... and then I didn't do it right after I signed up. I was probably distracted by a cat video or one of those bulgey man photos that my author pals are filling FB up with all day long. The good news is the book fricking rocked. So much I'm in book hangover mode still.

So I sat down with Gina at the last minute and suggested another recipe post and holy vibrating panties (read the book to get the joke) she delivered. A thousand thank-you's Gina, you are a goddess and I am a Madewood tart for life!

-- Rhi

I’m here to share a secret. A secret recipe that is.

In my latest release, Recipe for Seduction, my hero is shocked to find my heroine's fridge completely bare except for cream cheese and carrots. Like any good chef, what comes to mind when thinking of cream cheese and carrots?? Carrot cake, of course.

The carrot cake in Recipe for Seduction is inspired by my grandmother. Her carrot cake is famous. Well, at least within my family and in certain circles at my workplace. ☺

It’s yummy and light and let’s face it, anything is good when smothered in cream cheese icing.

So here it is. There recipe for Grandma Gordon’s Famous Carrot Cake. Enjoy!

From the carrot cake scene... now I'm hungry... ☺
Cake Ingredients:
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1teaspon baking soda
I teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 ½ cup of vegetable oil
4 eggs
2 cups carrot (shredded)
½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Cream Cheese Icing:
1 package of cream cheese- softened
¼ cup of butter, melted
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
2 cups icing sugar
Directions
 1.      Heat oven to 350 degrees.
2.      Whisk eggs and oil in a bowl until blended. Gradually beat in sugar until well blended.
3.      Add dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon) and carrots and mix well.
4.      Pour into a greased pan and bake 50 minutes or until toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
5.      Beat cream cheese, vanilla, and butter in a bowl with a mixer until well blended.
6.      Gradually beat in icing sugar and mix until blended.
7.      Spread icing onto cooled cake.
8.      Sprinkle chopped walnuts over the icing.

Blog Tour: Queen of Swords by Katee Robert [Excerpt + giveaway!]

Dear readers, I loves me some scifi romance. There's just something about alien races, space travel, and that kind of thing that takes me away like no other genre does. It's PNR on steroids. Which is one reason I think you guys will LOVE Katee Robert's Sanctify series. It takes elements you already love—like strong Alpha heroes and psychic abilities—and sends them out into the galaxy! As you can tell by my review from the original release of QUEEN OF SWORDS it's a combo that rocks. Check it out and be sure to watch for the next book in the series, THE HIGH PRIESTESS, releasing next month. -- Rhi

EXCERPT:
The Evarven caught sight of her and grinned. “Oy, man, look at her. No wonder you couldn’t keep it in your pants.”
Anger coiled its way through her stomach and up her throat, choking off the words she wanted to say. He’d told people about being with her? If the crew knew, then there was a decent chance the prince would know as well. She wasn’t ashamed of her choices, but telling people to pop off and mind their own business got old fast.
The man reached over, almost casually, and smacked the back of the Evarven’s head. “Do we have to talk about your mouth again, Gee?”
The Evarven didn’t look the least bit sorry. “Nah, Cap’n. I’ll do one last check before we space.” He ambled out of the hub as if he hadn’t a care in the world, leaving her alone with the object of her rage. In an effort to rein in her temper, Ophelia looked around. The deck itself wasn’t fancy by any means, just a hub with five seats on each wall and a deflector that protected the crew during jumps. On the other side of the room was a door leading to the cockpit. It took her all of five seconds to see everything there was to see. Then there was only him, pulling at her attention like some sort of freaky magnet.
He crossed his arms over his chest. “Took you long enough to find your way in here.”

Bring READING RAINBOW Back!!!

Dear readers,

Not sure if you guys saw this yet but it made me smile so much. I grew up poor and moved a lot. Reading was my escape and still is. One of my favorite things at school that stayed consistent from school to school was getting to watch Reading Rainbow. So it was the closest thing I had to a friend who followed me when I moved.

Anyway, because it's been such a special part of my life I can't help but want to see it be there for my kids and the kids out there who are like I was... in need of books and a place to build a passion for them. If you can spare some $$ please do. If not please help by spreading the word!

Review: The Last Policeman by Ben H. Winters

The Last Policeman: A Novel by Ben. H. Winters
Mystery, Apocalyptic
Ebook, Paperback, Audio (322 pages, QUIRK)
What’s the point in solving murders if we’re all going to die soon, anyway?
Detective Hank Palace has faced this question ever since asteroid 2011GV1 hovered into view. There’s no chance left. No hope. Just six precious months until impact.
The Last Policeman presents a fascinating portrait of a pre-apocalyptic United States. The economy spirals downward while crops rot in the fields. Churches and synagogues are packed. People all over the world are walking off the job—but not Hank Palace. He’s investigating a death by hanging in a city that sees a dozen suicides every week—except this one feels suspicious, and Palace is the only cop who cares.
The first in a trilogy, The Last Policeman offers a mystery set on the brink of an apocalypse. As Palace’s investigation plays out under the shadow of 2011GV1, we’re confronted by hard questions way beyond “whodunit.” What basis does civilization rest upon? What is life worth? What would any of us do, what would we really do, if our days were numbered?
Author Site: website

'Til death do us part... (4 stars)

When I was approached about getting my hands on review copies for this trilogy I hesitated. I just don't read a lot of mysteries and if you're familiar with my blog you're probably scratching your head as to why I would accept it. But I am so glad I did! I'm a big fan of end-of-days storylines but so very few tread into this kind of territory. What would people really do if they knew they only had a short amount of time to live... and everyone else was going out with them?

The mystery itself is slowly built and paced and Hank is actually a pretty dull character and yet I found THE LAST POLICEMAN impossible to put down. It's one of those stories that just begs to be finished in one sitting. With so many people committing suicide why would you bother killing someone? It's finding this motive that insists you keep turning the pages. It's sad and ugly and thoughtful and though Hank is far from the most interesting protagonist its his desire to know the truth that makes him a great character.

I enjoyed it so much I've been waiting to start the second book, COUNTDOWN CITY until right before the third book, WORLD OF TROUBLE, comes out so I'll be fresh. Not sure if it's for you? Think meets Seeking a Friend For the End of the World meets Melancholia with a detective who just won't quit trying to find the truth.

Review: The Demon Creed by Paula Altenburg

The Demon Creed (Demon Outlaws #3) by Paula Altenburg
Fantasy, Romance, Western, Demons
Ebook  (350 pages, ENTANGLED SELECT)
When the Godseeker assassin Creed investigates stories of children gone missing, the trail leads him to an isolated ranch that is rumored to be involved in the slave trade. The owner of the ranch orders the enslaved Nieve to find any weakness in Creed that can be used against him to stop his investigation.
But Creed's secrets are buried deep. Or so he believes.
Nieve, who knows the intensity of an immortal's allure firsthand, recognizes the demon in Creed at once. Fun-loving and irresistible to most women, Creed tries to keep his identity hidden, ease her fears and get to the truth the best way he knows how. Seduction.
But Nieve has her own secret—a demon who once tricked her and their half demon son who was sold into slavery.
In a race against the clock, she'll do whatever it takes to get her child back, even if it means putting her trust in Creed.

Author Site: website

My favorite couple of the trilogy! (4 stars)

In the conclusion of Altenburg's Demon Outlaws series we finally get to dig deep into Creed. He's been a bit of an enigmatic figure up to this point and I know I wasn't the only reader really excited to see what was under his layers. When his path crosses with Nieve the pair seem completely unlikely to wind up together. She's been a slave to a man who has ties to the slave trade, the man who sold her half demon son. Nieve has had enough experience with demons to distrust and recognize Creed for what he is but when their paths lead them on the path to finding her son the pair begin to warm to each other.

While THE DEMON CREED is the final novel in the Demon Outlaws trilogy and it does focus on tying up the world's overall story I'll admit that part of the story didn't draw me in much which was unexpected. I was kind of rushing to get through it because the romance between Nieve and Creed was so good. I liked that she seemed timid and weak but that she had a unique strength, one I personally found very relatable. Creed was a great match for her and I loved seeing him in action.

I don't want to give away the plot revolving around Nieve's son but if you've been reading the series I think you are going to be really satisfied with that part of the story. I was so thrilled with it I got all misty eyed. Hunter and Airie are back for part of the story as well and make a great contrast to Creed and Nieve.

I'm hesitant to suggest a reader pick this one up without having already read the rest of the series but there's a certain stand-alone quality to it that I think almost makes it good to read first and go back to the rest later. I guess that depends on you as a reader, if you've ever tried a late entry in a series and loved it enough to go back it might be worth a try.

Ten Books Every Writer Should Read*

By
Jamie K. Schmidt

I am a writing book junkie. If there is a craft book out there, I want to read it. If there’s a crazy new theory on how I can write faster, better, smarter, I don’t want to take the chance and miss out. So I’ve been collecting writing books for almost thirty years. I started writing before the Internet, when information about publishing was hard to come by and the newest edition of Writer’s Market was my reference library staple. To my inexperienced eye, publishing fiction was as veiled and secretive as any sheik’s harem. But I was able to take an insider’s glance and wrote my novel The Queen’s Wings, with the help of the following books:

1. Stephen King’s DANSE MACABRE. Before he wrote ON WRITING, DANSE MACABRE was a great non-fiction book about the horror genre. But it was also about storytelling and how to build tension. If you can get your hands on a copy – even if you’re not a horror aficionado – it’s a nice behind the scenes look.
2. Anne Lamott’s BIRD BY BIRD – Some Instructions on Writing and Life. The title comes from something the author’s father had said to her when she had to write a report on ornithology. She lamented how was she ever going to get all the information down and her father said, “Bird by bird, Annie.” This collection of essays is funny and honest and had me nodding my head when I recognized myself in them. More of a writing theory book, than an actual “how do I do it” book, it’s still worth a read – if only to realize you are not alone in your writerly thoughts.

Book Synopsis:
Let the game of seduction begin…
Veronica Whitfield feels like a frumpy old maid. After ten years of raising her younger siblings, she’s desperate to get her sexy back. And why not find it with the man she’s been in lust with since she was twelve years old—her brother’s best friend, Finn O’Reilly?
Finn is looking for love. And not any love—true love. Complete with the white picket fence, two children, and a dog. He’s just been a little unlucky finding it, and he sure as hell isn’t about to consider his best friend’s little sister for the job, no matter how badly he wants her in his bed.
But then Veronica propositions him with a game of dark, delicious seduction. Finn is tempted to indulge his hidden need for kink, but at what cost? Following through could very well ruin their friendship, but maybe—just maybe—helping Veronica rediscover her sexy side is exactly what he needs to find love at last…
