Review: Beyond Jealousy by Kit Rocha

Beyond Jealousy (Beyond #4) by Kit Rocha
Dystopian, Erotica, Romance
Ebook $3.99 (301 pages, SELFPUBLISHED)
She’s been looking for the perfect man. She found two.
When Rachel Riley sacrificed a life in Eden to protect the O’Kanes, she earned her place in the powerful Sector Four gang. But the former crime princess is tired of being everyone’s sweet little sister . It’s time for her to get wild, to embrace her fantasies as only an O’Kane can—with a delicious exiled soldier and the gang’s wickedly sinful tattoo artist.
A saint...
Lorenzo Cruz is a warrior, taught by his commanding officers in Eden that involvement equals distraction. Emotion is a liability, and desire a sin. In Sector Four, he finds decadence, shameless sex—and his own dark urges. No battle strategy prepared him for how Rachel makes his heart race…or the way his rival for her affections sets his blood on fire.
...and a sinner.
Ace Santana has a dirty reputation and a mind to match, especially where his new lovers are concerned. He’s eager to help Cruz embrace his dominant side, and to explore the lines between pleasure and pain with Rachel. But corrupting them quickly becomes an obsession, a need he can’t deny—and a love he never imagined.
Three hearts on the line means a hundred ways their ménage a trois could go wrong. After all, even O’Kanes do forever two-by-two. One of them could be the missing piece that makes them all whole…or a temporary diversion destined for a broken heart.

Three to get ready... (3 stars)

Here it is, the one everyone has been waiting for... and maybe that's the problem. If there's a Beyond series reader who doesn't have a soft spot for Ace I'd like to meet them. Which is why I think I had such a tough time with this one. Like so many readers I had Ace on a pedestal up until BEYOND JEALOUSY and I was pretty excited to see what team Rocha could do with a menage romance but then I read it and found myself not digging it.

I think, as with any romance, my biggest problem was that I've never felt particularly fond of Cruz or Rachel. Both felt pretty personality-lacking and that didn't change in BJ. About halfway through the story I realized that unlike previous installments of the series, no amount of kinky sex was going to make this one work for me. Even Ace felt off. With good reason I suppose but the whole love triangle (a true triangle) felt forced. A lot of telling and not enough showing beyond the sex. I think that was the idea as it gets better toward the end but man was that a difficult thing to read.

What redeemed this from a lower star rating is that there was a lot going on with the O'Kane's and the overall series arc that was carefully slipped in. I love this world and I love the gang so keeping them fighting for their place in it keeps me reading. There are some confusing revelations about Eden and Cruz and Bren's pasts that I wish had been explained a bit more clearly and may well be important later in the series.

While I found BJ lacking in the love, it was pretty frickin' steamy. If you're into BDSM this one will definitely be for you (it's not my thing so that didn't help me much). The chemistry they lack emotionally they certainly have physically. I think I'm going to be the exception among the fans and the rest of you will love it. This one will certainly warm you up for book seven and has plenty of hints as to who that'll be about.
