Review: Wish Upon a Star by Michelle McLean

Wish Upon a Star by Michelle McLean
Romance, Zombies, Re-telling
Ebook $1.99 (77 pages, ENTANGLED EVER AFTER)
Ceri McKinley never stopped wishing that her ex-fiancé Jason Crickett would come back into her life. But when he finally does, he comes with a request that puts them both—and all of humanity—into jeopardy.
Jason only wants two things: to bury his brother properly and to convince Ceri to trust him again after he jilted her. But when Ceri agrees to help him get his brother back, they end up fighting for their lives as the second zombie uprising threatens them all.

Too much mish-mash warps a good one. (3 stars)

Read the blurb and imagine a gigantic Las Vegas resort filled with zombies as the outcome. Picture something really important at risk and a clock counting down just a couple of hours for the hero and heroine to get to it in. Now pepper it with the tension of long lost love and a chance at it being reborn. That's the basic jist of this short from Michelle McLean.

I love a good zombie story. I love a great fairy tale retelling. And obviously I enjoy romances. The trouble with WISH UPON A STAR is that I'm not sure which McLean really wanted it to be. The blurb doesn't hint at the possible retelling aspect in an overt way so I went in expecting a zombie romance. On that it certainly delivers. Ceri's ex-husband is an absolute psychopath and Jason asking for her help in convincing him to help their family quickly proves to be a bad situation for them both. I quickly took a dislike to him when he got mad that Ceri had moved on, so not a cool move when the hero is the one who jilted the heroine.

Once the story gets set up the mentions of Pinocchio thematic elements quickly becomes notable but never really manages to give WISH UPON A STAR a proper retelling. Instead, it just feels disjointed and distracting. The Pinocchio weirdness and Jason being less-then-likable aside, it's a nail-biting race against a clock with zombies to escape and a love to rekindle.

Review: One Thousand and One Nights by Ruth Browne

One Thousand and One Nights by Ruth Browne
Romance, Retelling, Zombies
Ebook $1.99 (50 pages, ENTANGLED EVER AFTER)
Sheri spends her days fighting zombies and her nights chained to a wall, earning her every breath by telling stories to her captor Aleksy—stories that make them both forget the ruined world. Sheri could put up with the conditions—at least she knows her sister is safe in the community Aleksy leads—until she realizes she’s falling for him...even though he wants her dead.
When Aleksy allowed Sheri and her sister into his compound, he didn’t know about the zombie bite on her back. It's only a matter of time before she turns into one of the rising dead and threatens their existence, but Aleksy has a secret need for Sheri and her stories. For everyone’s safety, he chains her to his bedroom wall, hoping for just one more day. But how long will the community allow Aleksy to ignore his own rule: always kill the infected. Always.

One for the weirdos, like me. (5 stars)

If you were a bookish kid like I was you probably know who Scheherazade is, if you don't you probably won't follow the story enough to really enjoy the coolness of it. So look her up if you don't and give this one a whirl.

In this delightfully dark retelling of One Thousand and One Nights, suitably titled the very same, our heroine is not the clever girl of the original but rather a victim of a new world filled with monsters. Many times bitten and scarred by zombies but unturned she remains a liability to the compound's "king", Aleksy. He knows it undermines his own authority not to have killed her, yet her lack of turning poses a dilemma only heightened by his attraction to her. Because wanting to get in a possible zombie's pants is pretty messed up.

Every night Sheri reads to Aleksy from where she is chained to his bedroom wall. Her only real concern is keeping her younger sister protected within the compound. If that means being treated like an animal she is willing. As you can imagine, Sheri and Aleksy have their own sad back stories, and it's only a matter of time before they give in to their desire for one another.

I may be the only reader who thought this was awesome. I saw a few early reviews and I think the biggest problem other had was not finding it relatable, which may be a big deal with romance readers who want to put themselves in the place of the heroine. I do agree, if that's your preference Sheri is not a relatable character and Aleksy is kind of difficult to like. If you like zombie stories more than romance this is a really different and enjoyable take on one of my favorite "fairy tales".

I recommend this one for the geeks who obsess over The Walking Dead and Once Upon a Time on Sunday nights. This is definitely a darker romance than I think many readers are used to and if you enjoy dabbling into something less-then-sweet from time to time it's a twisted and imagination-bending tweak on a lesser-known tale of a woman's wisdom. I loved it!

Review: Haunted Chemistry by Lindsey Loucks

Haunted Chemistry by Lindsey R. Loucks
Romance, Ghosts
Ebook 99¢ (120 pages, ENTANGLED EVER AFTER)

Kind of ridiculous, but entertaining. (4 stars)

Crushing chem partners, Alexis and Ian, stumble upon one another at the apartment building laundry room. Awkwardness over the date he stood her up for last semester ensues but the sparks of interest between them haven't totally fizzled. Now if only there weren't a murderous ghost making the already spooky laundry room into the heart of horror flick shenanigans. If Alexis and Ian want another chance at that first date they've got to get rid of the resident evil haunting their home.

HAUNTED CHEMISTRY is exactly the kind of seasonally fun read you will enjoy if you like some hilarity in your horror. Think Scary Movie or Gremlins with a hint of The Ring. It's kind of silly and cringe-inducingly ridiculous but in a hard-not-to-enjoy kind of way. It'll make your skin crawl if you've ever had to venture into a poorly lit basement on any errand but isn't so terrifying you won't be able to sleep after finishing.

A good one for younger romance readers looking for something a little thematic this October that's moody without getting too dark. A tongue-in-cheek fun-poking good time for readers who like seeing the hero and heroine overcome personal missteps to get their love on.

Gage Ivanov was in no mood to be fucked with by the woman looking blankly back at him from the other side of the desk that separated them. One would think since he’d finally caught some desperately needed zzz’s after being awake for 48 hours straight while on a mission, he’d be in a better mood. This was not the case. If anything, he felt as if he was approximately 3.2 seconds from flipping his shit. Which would involve tearing the door off of the Fort Bragg Military Police’s inner sanctum, stalking past the annoying female with a tantalizing scent that was starting to drive him insane, and collecting his Heckler & Koch MK 23 his damn self from the evidence room. Screw the harpy for saying he couldn’t have his issued side arm back.

Now, to meet the men competing in the #MrSeptember Throwdown!

Whew! Hot, hot, hot - these men have definitely turned up the heat!

Ian: Wicked Games by Samanthe Beck  (part of the anthology)
Grayson: Seducing Mr. Right by Katee Robert  (part of the anthology)
Landon: Tempted by His Best Friend by Cari Quinn  (part of the anthology)
Derek: Protecting What's Theirs by Tessa Bailey  (part of the anthology)
Jett: Wicked Heat by Nicola Marsh
Trick: Dirty Trick by Christine Bell

Here are today’s questions for the men

Question #1: Favorite ice cream flavor?

Ian: Bourbon or whiskey, hold the ice cream.

Grayson: Chocolate

Trick: Cherry Garcia

Derek: I don't do sweet…not unless I'm licking it off Ginger's belly. So I guess you could say my favorite ice cream flavor is Ginger.

Jett: Rum and Raisin (though don’t believe the cliché Aussie stereotype that we need alcohol to have a good time. We don’t. We just like having a good time period.)

Landon: Vanilla bean. I'm anything but vanilla behind closed doors but when it comes to dessert? Can't do better than that.

Question #2: Steamiest place you’ve ever seduced a lady?

Ian: Private room at a club called Deuces, but “seduction” is too tame a word for what went down. I still have bruises…

Grayson: My office. I bent her over my desk and… Well, a true gentleman never tells the dirty details.

Trick: Funny you should phrase it that way. It was in a sauna, pretty recently and was definitely steamy.

Derek: While operating a motor vehicle through Chicago traffic in evening attire. Not as complicated as it sounds, if you know the right words to say. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.

Jett: First class cabin on a jet. Ask Allegra. She’ll vouch for me.

Landon: Hmm, I distinctly remember having some fun on the receptionist's counter at my law firm with my favorite leading lady...but I don't kiss and tell, so read my novella to find out for sure.

Now cast your vote for your pick for #MrSeptember for a chance at some awesome prizes!

W.R. [09/20-09/22] :: Spooky Shorts & Unmasking Hot Heroes

TGIF guys! Anyone else have the kind of week where Monday felt like it was a Thursday? All week I was dying for it to be over. I tend to be goal oriented as long as I have some kind of plan on how I'm getting there and my October is going to be exhausting so I'm in this mode of just wanting it to happen and be over. But look! Today is the final workout day on my workout calendar! I kind of had a bad week last week and crapped out for 3 days—which was probably good since I was having heel pain—and was left feeling bad about it. But all of those X's are paying off. I got to tighten my belt last night.

Just like setting fitness goals we've all got reading goals right? I had a big open month this month and then blam all at once I got a bunch of offers. Love when that happens but it can be tough being realistic about what I have time for. The big difference between reading as a blogger and being just a reader (aside from not paying for as many books) is time management. The good news is I had some great reads this week!

These 6 short romances featuring ghosts and zombies are all perfect for getting in the Halloween spirit. I've finished all of them save for Northern Light which I had to force myself to put down at 2:30-something in the morning. I don't read a lot of GLBT romances and this one is making me think I should, really, really good. I also hope that E.J. Russell writes more stories, she's a fabulous story weaver.

Once I finish Northern Light I'm going to try and finish up the Lovers Unmasked anthology because on Monday I'll have up the Brazen #MrSeptember Throwdown. The prizes are freaking awesome and it's going to be a fun week! Be sure you're following me on Twitter and Facebook so you see reminders.

On that note guys, I'm off to get my yoga pants on for my final workout on the calendar before enjoying my rest day (of reading) tomorrow. Hope you have a great book you're working on this weekend, leave a comment letting me know what it is if you are. :) TTFN! -- Rhi

Review: The Clockwork Scarab by Colleen Gleason

The Clockwork Scarab (Stoker & Holmes #1) by Colleen Gleason
Young Adult, Steampunk, Time Travel
Hardcover $17.99 (356 pages, CHRONICLE)
Ebook $13.99

Evaline Stoker and Mina Holmes never meant to get into the family business. But when you're the sister of Bram and the niece of Sherlock, vampire hunting and mystery solving are in your blood. And when two society girls go missing, there's no one more qualified to investigate. Now fierce Evaline and logical Mina must resolve their rivalry, navigate the advances of not just one but three mysterious gentlemen, and solve murder with only one clue: a strange Egyptian scarab. The stakes are high. If Stoker and Holmes don't unravel why the belles of London society are in such danger, they'll become the next victims.
Author Site: website

Lots of issues but great conceptually (3 stars)

The sister of Bram Stoker—Oh, and guess what? They're Gardella descendants!—and the niece of Sherlock Holmes teaming up. Yep, a concept any female reader is sure to find intriguing. Throw in a mystery threatening the young ladies of London and a dash of time travel and the story starts off with a decent premise. Non-consecutive chapters with Mina Holmes and Evaline Stoker as the focus give a deeper look at each individually and yet somehow make them feel less like a team. While Evaline's status as a Venator makes her a bit more physical, Mina is rather cerebral which is far from surprising. What is surprising is how minimal scenes with Mina really deducing anything are only sprinkled in, I expected her to be just a bit more on her famous Uncle's level.

The plot itself is painfully slow, something I always struggle with when I read Gleason's work. It's interesting with elements of time-travel and steampunk flavoring the mystery and I was eager to see our young heroines unmask the villain. Alas, the mystery is unresolved! Great if you want to slog through a series to find out all of the answers, bad if you went in expecting each novel would have its own mystery that strengthens the friendship of the heroines. Bah! So much potential that just didn't get reached.

What did work for me was the somewhat romantic subplot. Three different gentlemen become enmeshed in the adventure, each unique and fun to read. I do enjoy a good love interest to keep things interesting and these guys serve that purpose very well. I also enjoyed the cameos from Bram, Sherlock and Dr. Watson, they definitely make it worth the read.

Sadly, there was a lot I didn't like about THE CLOCKWORK SCARAB, largest of all the inclusion of the Gardellas. Some fans of Gleason's might love that aspect but I felt like it cheapened the story. The ending left pretty much everything unresolved and if that kind of thing drives you as batty as it does me you'll want to throw the book at the wall. While I could only rate this as an okay read the target young adult audience will probably like it much more unless they have similar woes to those I mentioned. I'll probably give the series one more book to win me over since I still adore the concept and want to see if it can rise from the issues I had with this opener.
