Weekend Reading [08/30-09/02] :: Help me & reading gaps...

Find my last post for the chance to win this series!!!

TGIF! Did you guys have a crazy week? School started here so mine was pretty weird. I am far from a morning person so I've been running on coffee and enthusiasm.

I forgot this was a holiday weekend until I saw folks mentioning it on Facebook this morning. I'm kind of depressed about it. September is a month I really hate but guess what? In just over a month RhiReading is turning 5! Can you believe I've been doing this for that long? I'm still kind of wondering how I've managed to keep it going all by myself.

I had a couple of things I was going to feature today including a romance video game and a couple of products from my new Tastefully Simple product line but I'm so brain-dead this morning. I've got to write a grocery list, help my cousin start a blog, find time to workout, and fold a ton of laundry. There is one thing you can do for me though... go check out Influenster and if you're interested in joining let me know via email (always.and.never AT gmail DOT com) and I'll invite you. I need 3 friends to join and be active by next Friday!

This weekend I realized I have a tiny gap in my scheduled reading for reviews and tours. I think I'm going to try and finish Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead and try to finish Driven by Eve Silver, but I'm going to start The Clockwork Scarab: A Stoker & Holmes Novel by Colleen Gleason. I'm loving the concept and have been dying to finally read it. Check out the trailer for it:

And on that note I need to go write down "whole chicken, asparagus, potatoes" and a bunch of other things before I forget. Have a fabulous weekend and don't forget to leave a comment telling me what you're reading! -- Rhi

Review: Everlast by Aundria Buchannan

Everlast (The Chronicles of Nerissette #1) by Andria Buchanan
Young Adult, Fantasy
Ebook $5.69 (320 pages, ENTANGLED TEEN)
Paperback $9.99

Allie Munroe has only ever wanted to belong, maybe even be well liked. But even though she’s nice and smart and has a couple of friends, she’s still pretty much the invisible girl at school. So when the chance to work with her friends and some of the popular kids on an English project comes up, Allie jumps at the chance to be noticed.
And her plan would have worked out just fine…if they hadn’t been sucked into a magical realm through a dusty old book of fairy tales in the middle of the library.
Now, Allie and her classmates are stuck in Nerissette, a world where karma rules and your social status is determined by what you deserve. Which makes a misfit like Allie the Crown Princess, and her archrival the scullery maid. And the only way out is for Allie to rally and lead the people of Nerissette against the evil forces that threaten their very existence.

Author Site: website

A clean fantasy light for the middle school bunch. (2 stars)

When Allie Munroe sets off for the library to work on a project with her friends and a pair of popular kids she has no idea what a bad day she's in for. When the quintet get sucked into a magic book and deposited into the world of Nerissette their lives are forever changed. Allie finds out she's the princess of Nerissette and each of her companions' fate is changed. Told that Fate—a god of the magical realm—chose this new life for them the only thing to do is play along. But the longer they remain in Nerissette the more Allie realizes about the lies she was raised on.

The man who is supposed to have been the steward of the kingdom in the absence of its queen has been manipulating the people and it's up to Allie and her friends to save Nerissette. If they ever want to get home they are going to have to change Fate's design and fight for control of the kingdom.

Having read Buchanan's work under her other pen name I had high hopes for Everlast. Unfortunately, it was just not for me. From the start the pacing is choppy, the character development is minimal, and the story itself has plot holes that an adult reader is likely to pick apart quickly. With that in mind this is one YA title I won't recommend to adults but think is a great choice for the middle school age group. It's very clean (no cursing, kisses at most) and only mildly violent. If you're in that age group I think you might really enjoy this story.

The one thing I did love about Everlast was that Allie's friend/crush, Winston, isn't white. I love interracial relationships and feel that really set this one apart from others in the genre. Kudos for choosing diversity Andria! Now if only Allie wasn't so dull and clueless and everyone didn't repeat and rehash the same things over and over and over and over until I wanted to throw my ereader across the room.

To sum it up... this is one YA title that's suited to the target audience but will probably frustrate and annoy adult fans of the genre.

Review: Beyond Pain by Kit Rocha

Beyond Pain (Beyond #3) by Kit Rocha
Erotica, Romance, Dystopian
Ebook $4.99 (SELFPUBLISHED)
A woman with no future…
Live fast, die young--anything else is a fantasy for Six. She’s endured the worst the sectors had to throw at her, but falling in with Dallas O’Kane’s Sector Four gang lands her in a whole new world of danger. They’re completely open about everything, including their sexuality--but she hasn’t survived this long by making herself vulnerable. Especially not to men as dominant as Brendan Donnelly.
A man without a past…
Bren is a killer, trained in Eden and thrown to the sectors. His one outlet is pain, in the cage and in the bedroom, and emotion is a luxury he can’t afford--until he meets Six. Protecting her soothes him, but it isn’t enough. Her hunger for touch sparks a journey of erotic discovery where anything goes--voyeurism, flogging, rough sex. He has only one rule: he won’t share her.
In Bren’s arms, Six is finally free to let go. But his obsession with the man who made him a monster could destroy the fragile connection they’ve forged, and cost him the one thing that makes him feel human--her love.

The series that should have a cold shower required warning... (4 stars)

No sense summarizing this one for you because if you're reading this review you're probably a fan of the series already. You pretty much know what (and whom) is coming. Yep. I went there.

From the beginning of the series I've been dying to know more about Bren. When Six came into the picture I immediately felt a sort of kinship with her that I hadn't felt with any of the O'Kane girls. I wanted her to prove herself and become a part of the gang. If you relate to outsiders who've had to fend for themselves in bad situations you'll appreciate her back story. Alas, I found Bren's was a bit anticlimactic.

As much as I had looked forward to Bren and Six's story it just wasn't quite what I'd expected. We all love how graphic (and creative!) these books are but with Six's issues I liked that their erotic scenes were more private and less group oriented. Then there was the final scene and I was admittedly disappointed. I won't spoil anything and maybe I just missed some kind of special meaning to it but I just wasn't happy with where that went. I was also expecting there to be more to Bren's need for pain.

I know I sound really negative and this is probably a case of expecting one thing and getting another, or just having expectations too large to meet. lol Keeping that in mind I did enjoy it, just wasn't as in love with it as I'd hoped. What did really ruin a bit of it was Ace. That man is a scene stealing, is-there-anything-he-isn't-into pain in my fiction. As my other favorite O'Kane he has a way of slipping in there and distracting everyone, if you've been dying for a tease of his story... holy crap you are going to be writhing after one of his chapters. Trust me and be ready for a cold shower afterwards.

While I didn't quite love BEYOND PAIN, it was a nice change of pace from the heavily group oriented eroticism with Jas/Noelle and Dallas/Lex. There's a plot beyond the coupling that's good and plenty of scenes with other characters to even it out. If you've loved the series so far move this bad boy up your TBR list.

The Demon's Desire by Kendra Leigh Castle
Hearts of the Fallen #2

He’s as dark and dangerous as the storms he once commanded…and she can’t get him out of her heart.

Dru has spent two thousand years fighting to keep the people of Terra Noctem safe. In all that time, she's only opened her heart to one man, with disastrous results. But when her city takes in a group of renegade Fallen, she finds herself drawn to the brooding and tormented Meresin, despite the fact that he seems to be the least redeemable of them all. When his instability hits a breaking point, Meresin’s only chance at survival is a perilous journey into a place from which few ever return. What he never expected was that confronting his demons would mean risking not only his future, but Dru's as well...and that one stubborn vampire might give him back not just hope…but his heart.

About Abby:

Ever since Abby Niles picked up her first Sweet Valley High book in sixth grade and fell in love with Elizabeth and Todd, she’s been hooked on romance. By the time she reached high school, she was devouring meatier romances with pirates, cowboys and knights. She never imagined that those years of reading would one day lead to her becoming a published author.

In her late twenties, after having twins and becoming a stay-at-home mom, she started doodling stories to keep her sanity. Next thing she knew, she was actually submitting to publishing houses. And was immediately rejected. That didn’t stop her though. She found herself some kickass critique partners, honed her craft, and continued submitting.

And eventually sold a short story, then a novella, then a novel, and now a series.

Today, she juggles work, home life, and writing. It’s not always easy, but hey, who said life was easy?

In her downtime, which isn’t often, you can find her playing ‘Just Dance’ with her kids or trying to catch up on her never-ending to-be-read list. She also loves Zumba, and refuses to admit she looks more like Animal doing his Muppet flail than a sensual Latin dancer.

About Kendra:

Kendra Leigh Castle was born and raised in the far and frozen reaches of Northern New York, where there was plenty of time to cultivate her love of reading thanks to the six-month-long winters. Sneaking off with selections from her mother’s vast collection of romance novels came naturally and fairly early, and a lifelong love of the Happily Ever After was born. After graduating from SUNY Oswego (where it also snowed a lot) with a teaching degree, Kendra ran off with a handsome young Navy fighter pilot and has somehow accumulated three children, three dogs, and one enormous cat during their many moves.

While stationed in a remote corner of the Nevada desert, Kendra penned her first romance, and a career often spent working in fuzzy slippers and pajamas was born. Her work has garnered both critical praise and award nominations, but the best part has been connecting with readers who share her love of dark romance (not to mention heroes with sharp, pointed teeth). Kendra currently lives in Maryland, and can usually be found curled up with her laptop and yet another cup of coffee working on her next book. She loves to hear from her readers, and can be contacted via email or her Facebook page.

Should have called it The Vampire's Desire... (4 stars)

The biggest misfortune of this series is how intertwined the books are. When I read THE DEMON'S SONG I spent much of the time being confused by mentions of characters and events that you don't usually get in a first of the series. As it happens, some digging helped me discover that Castle has written about some of the secondary characters and this world in a series for another publisher. It's my humble opinion that if you want to enjoy the Hearts of the Fallen you really need to have read the others. I was still pretty confused about some of what goes on in THE DEMON'S DESIRE thanks to the same trouble with references.

If you can get past the confusing bits this is a really good story. I am very fond of romances where the heroine does more of the pursuing than the hero but they are few and far between. If you enjoy that role reversal this is one great example. Meresin has a lot of issues that make him think he's not worthy of acceptance, let alone love. Dru is pretty much the only person who has any positive effect on him and no one else gets why she'd have anything to do with him. It makes for a nice change from the usual romance tropes.

The plot itself is pretty straight forward, very predictable, yet still manages to be well executed. I'm a fan of virgin heroes so if you are too make sure you give this one a read!

I didn't care for TDS so I was admittedly very hesitant to give the series another chance. I really enjoy Castle's writing style but I never read a second in a series if I gave the first only 2 stars. I'm very glad I took the chance and think if you had a similar feeling about TDS you might want to give the series a second chance with TDD.

Sympathy for the devil... (3 stars)

In the previous installment in The Awakening series, Liam's mate refusing the bond was what brought the hero and heroine together. As they worked to help him get his life to a manageable place they fell in love. When Ava rejected Liam it was much more complicated than he knew and when he suddenly feels her die his world is flipped upside down.

Liam and Ava find themselves at the mercy of a masked mad-man who claims that he owes Liam the torment he puts them through. But with no clue as to whom he has made an enemy there's only so much he can do to protect his mate. As they struggle with their deep secrets and the unlost feelings between them they'll have to find some way to unmask the predator without anyone else getting hurt. Especially avoiding more heartbreak of their own.

Hmmm, I'm finding this one a tough one to review. Generally, I'm not a huge fan of fated mates but Niles has given it a fresh and interesting twist that makes the world intriguing. The plot of this one wasn't very original, yet managed to be a tense read. I think most readers will find the villain's plot twist to be a surprise and that's always good. One thing that really killed it for me though was the lack of sympathy shown to the villain. I honestly felt like everything he had been doing was a little too understandable once it was revealed why he was doing it. It all felt very brushed under the rug and discounted when I'm pretty sure Liam and most heroes would have done the same thing.

As much as I wanted to really like Ava and Liam—and I did to a point—their lack of communication and secret keeping was just plain stupid. Sure, without it there wouldn't have been much of a story, but if you get frustrated when characters are very stubborn about something this important you might find yourself disliking them for it. That said, if you love steamy scenes, they might make up for it there. ;)

Overall, I was just very meh on this one. Didn't dislike it but wasn't super thrilled with it either. I think a lot of fated mates fans will absolutely love it if they can get past the frustrating 'just tell him already' moments. I said it with the previous installment and it bears noting again... I'm not loving this series but I think I'll keep giving it a read because it's a different take on a trope I don't usually enjoy.

Marisol Vargas had life all figured out. Having fun without strings attached was good. Commitment and monogamy was bad. That is, until both of her best friends got married and had kids. Laughter & Tears (5 stars)

Readers are going to think I've developed a bit of a partiality toward Moss after the streak of reviews she's earned from me this year. If I have, it's been hard earned, as she is the author who managed to drag this paranormal preferring reader over to the contemporary shelf. Let me tell ya that was no easy feat.

What's made Moss' work such a treasure is what she brings once more to her work in APPLES & ORANGES. Authentic human beings with flaws and feelings spill right off the pages and you forget you're not watching a movie. After reading BABY & BUMP I thought there was no way Marisol would win me over as a heroine. She has a transparent moment in B&B that brought me to tears but I just couldn't imagine her giving up her Samantha Jones-esque ways to find a happily-ever-after. I should have known Moss would prove me wrong!

From their first meeting Demo is surly and rude making him a terrific foil for Marisol. Men fall at her feet, how could he resist her? Well, he has his reasons and before you know it their hate-on for one another snowballs into a complicated and fun romance. It wouldn't be a Moss story without some fun family and background characters spicing up the mix and I just adored Demo's wily grandmother.

Now, I want you to go buy this book and read it because it's a great romance but dear reader I am warning you... do not begin chapter 16 without a box of tissues. I won't spoil it for ya but if you get even the littlest bit invested in characters and cry when something bad happens... just trust me on this one. Bring the tissues.

Belly laughs, dreamy sighs, alligator tears, and fantasies about baklava are in store for you in A&O! If you love a story that can do all that to you and more I highly recommend adding this one to your personal library.

Weekend Reading [08/16-08/18] :: Fruit Salad Tears & Covet Boys

Hello readers! Every once in a while my husband has to go out of town for his job. Having done the Army thing earlier in our marriage I've had plenty of experience with being a 'single parent' for months at a time so a few days is never a big deal. (It's kind of rotten of me but I love having the bed to myself!) So what's with the photo of one of my cats?

I was lying there reading and I heard a snore. The hubs is a big time snorer and sleep talker so I kind of did this WTF face—he wasn't there, of course—and looked over... yep, the kitty was so sleepy he had fallen asleep and facepalmed. Isn't he precious? lol

I didn't get as much reading done this week as I had hoped. But what I did get read was really damned good.  APPLES & ORANGES by Brooke Moss was surprisingly emotional and she pulled one hell of a shocker... when you read it make sure you've got tissues when you start Chapter 16. Consider that your warning.

Going into the weekend I realized I'm back to being swamped with review reading. Which is actually okay, because the books I have on my plate are ones I've been eager to read. I wasn't super impressed with their series starters (if you've been here long you probably have noticed a trend there) so I wanted to see if it was just the series or those particular stories. THE AWAKENING: LIAM by Abby Niles and THE DEMON'S DESIRE by Kendra Leigh Castle are my reads for the weekend. Demons and shapeshifters always make for a fun weekend.

What are you guys working on? Got any recommendations for tear-jerker romances? Have a great weekend! -- Rhi

Review: Fake Fiance, Real Revenge by Roxanne Snopek

Fake Fiance, Real Revenge (Three River Ranch #3) by Roxanne Snopek
Category Romance, Contemporary Romance
Ebook $2.99 (191 pages, BLISS)
This cowboy doesn't know what he's in for...
Real-estate tycoon Mitchell Granger has a problem. In order to secure a lucrative deal with an eccentric client, he told the teeny white lie that he was engaged…and now he needs to prove it. Even worse? The only name that came to mind was Sabrina Becker, the girl he was never good enough for growing up, and who still lives near his family ranch.
Sabrina doesn’t mind posing as Mitch’s fake fiancée—no, she doesn’t mind at all. One, she’ll make him pay with new construction for her business. And two, Sabrina’s got a plan to exact revenge on her first love, the boy who left her and Three River Ranch behind. She’ll pretend so well, he’ll fall in love with her…and then he’ll get a taste of what true heartbreak feels like.
But as Mitch sheds his corporate skin and picks up his dusty jeans and cowboy hat, will both his and Sabrina’s grand plans get derailed by love?

Author Site: www.roxannesnopek.ca

If you love a revenge plot... (4 stars)

I'd be lying if I said I'd been looking forward to FAKE FIANCE, REAL REVENGE. Mitch Granger hadn't exactly been set up as a guy you want as a hero. He'd been a pain in the butt to his brother Carson and run out on Sabrina when things were tough. But I hadn't exactly thought I'd like Zach Gamble and I loved the heck out of HER RELUCTANT RANCHER so I figured I'd give it a shot. If you read the blurb, you'll know what you're getting yourself into.

I really liked Sabrina from the get go. She's a good woman and she cares about her community, something that rings very true if you're going to set your romance here in Montana, where I live. But she lost points with me as soon as she decided that getting revenge against Mitch was worth pretending to be his fiance. It might be a trope other readers love—and if you do I think you'll love this one—but I just couldn't get it to set right with me. Mitch, meanwhile, isn't very likable. I honestly never warmed up to him, not even at the end.

So how could I wind up liking it without liking the hero and not loving the trope? Snopek is just a great writer. She brings her worlds to life and peppers them with memorable characters and a realism that's tangible. If you've read the previous entries in the series there's just enough of our old friends to keep it warm and inviting in spite of you possibly wanting to give Mitch a what-for every few pages. I might not have loved Mitch and Sabrina's story but it was a good one and introduced some new characters. I'm excited to see who the hero and heroine of the next Three River ranch series entry, THE FORBIDDEN RANCHER, will be.

If revenge is a trope you enjoy in romance I highly recommend FFRR and if you're a fan of the series it's one you probably shouldn't miss even though I don't think it's the best of the bunch.

Cover Reveal: Hard As You Can by Laura Kaye

Avon is proud to announce the publication of Laura Kaye’s second book in her hot Hard Ink series, HARD AS YOU CAN (On Sale: February 25, 2014).

Ever since hard-bodied, drop-dead-charming Shane McCallan strolled into the dance club where Crystal Dean works, he’s shown a knack for getting beneath her defenses. For her little sister’s sake, Crystal can’t get too close. Until her job and Shane’s mission intersect, and he reveals talents that go deeper than she could have guessed.
Shane would never turn his back on a friend in need, especially a former Special Forces teammate running a dangerous, off-the-books operation. Nor can he walk away from Crystal. The gorgeous waitress is hiding secrets she doesn't want him to uncover. Too bad. He’s exactly the man she needs to protect her sister, her life, and her heart. All he has to do is convince her that when something feels this good, you hold on as hard as you can-and never let go.

Entangled Teen Launch Party

Welcome to the Entangled Teen August 6 launch party!

Today, we're celebrating the release of Out of Play by Nyrae Dawn and Jolene Perry, A Tale of Two Centuries by Rachel Harris, and Hover by Melissa West (coming August 13th).

Out of Play by Nyrae Dawn and Jolene Perry

Rock star drummer Bishop Riley doesn’t
have a drug problem. Celebrities—especially ones suffering from
anxiety—just need a little help taking the edge off sometimes.
After downing a few too many pills, Bishop wakes up in the hospital
facing an intervention. If he wants to stay in the band, he’ll have
to detox while under house arrest in Seldon, Alaska.

Hockey player Penny Jones can’t
imagine a life outside of Seldon. Though she has tons of scholarship
offers to all the best schools, the last thing she wants is to leave.
Who’ll take care of her absentminded gramps? Not her mother, who
can’t even be bothered to come home from work, let alone deal with
their new tenants next door.

Penny’s not interested in dealing
with Bishop’s crappy attitude, and Bishop’s too busy sneaking
pills to care. Until he starts hanging out with Gramps and begins to
see what he’s been missing. If Bishop wants a chance with the fiery
girl next door, he’ll have to admit he has a problem and kick it.
Too bad addiction is hard to kick…and Bishop’s about to run out
of time.

A Tale of Two Centuries by Rachel Harris

Alessandra D’Angeli is in need of an
adventure. Tired of her sixteenth-century life in Italy and homesick
for her time-traveling cousin, Cat, who visited her for a magical
week and dazzled her with tales of the future, Alessandra is lost.
Until the stars hear her plea.

One mystical spell later, Alessandra
appears on Cat’s Beverly Hills doorstep five hundred years in the
future. Surrounded by confusing gadgets, scary transportation, and
scandalous clothing, Less is hesitant to live the life of a
twenty-first century teen…until she meets the infuriating—and
infuriatingly handsome—surfer Austin Michaels. Austin challenges
everything she believes in…and introduces her to a world filled
with possibility.

With the clock ticking, Less knows she
must live every moment of her modern life while she still can. But
how will she return to the drab life of her past when the future is
what holds everything she’s come to love?

Hover by Melissa West

On Earth, seventeen-year-old Ari
Alexander was taught to never peek, but if she hopes to survive life
on her new planet, Loge, her eyes must never shut.

Because in this world, pleasure is
everything, held up by a ruling body that keeps their people in check
by giving them what they want and closing their eyes to what’s
really happening around them. The only hope Loge has is to move its
people to Earth, and they have a plan.

Thousands of humans crossed over to
Loge after a poisonous neurotoxin released into Earth’s atmosphere,
nearly killing them. They sought refuge in hopes of finding a new
life, but what they became were slaves, built to wage war against
their home planet. That is, unless Ari and Jackson can stop them.

But on Loge, nothing is as it seems…and
no one can be trusted.
