Review: As Hard As It Gets by Laura Kaye

Hard As It Gets (Hard Ink #1) by Laura Kaye
Contemporary Romance, Military
Mass Market Paperback $5.99 (368 pages, AVON)
Ebook $4.74

Audiobook $26.45
Tall, dark, and lethal...
Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey's tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome--pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.
With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.
Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge...

A great series starter! (4 stars)

I'm quite certain I'll be the only reviewer who had a hard time reading this one that still liked it. This is one of those stories that somehow feels like everything but the kitchen sink has been tossed in and it's kind of cringe-inducing. But also fun.

Becca reminds me a lot of previous Kaye heroines I've read and in a good way. She's strong in some areas and needs help in others. If you loved Megan in NORTH OF NEED, you'll like Becca. In contrast, Nick's a little bit enigmatic, and holds back, with good reason. If you like a hero that's a little brooding without being a big downer he's a great one. I really liked that he had an artistic side and a warrior side, big kudos to Kaye for creating a well rounded hero.

Truth be told, it wasn't the romance that I really enjoyed in this one and if you're more interested in that aspect of the story you might find this a slow read. I tend to lean more toward the adventure aspects and Nick bringing his team back together to do a rescue mission was exciting. Strangely enough my favorite character wound up being Nick's younger brother whom I think I won't be alone in book boyfriending. There's a series arc that starts here that reminds me of the much beloved Black Dagger Brotherhood series so if you like a broad storyline to carry you from romance to romance make sure you check this out.

While it certainly had some slow points and the action was not as big of a part of the story as I'd have liked, there's plenty of snort-out-loud humor and a lot of between-the-sheets (and in front of a mirror and so on...) action to keep ya busy. This is definitely a read for fans of military romances and 'brotherhood' series. I'm definitely recommending a pre-order for the next Hard Ink novel.

The Awakening: Britton by Abby Niles
The Awakening #3

"I would lick that man up one side and down the other."

Half-shifter and lead SPAC agent, Val Calhoun, has listened to women gush over the Don Juan of the precinct for the last four years. Yeah, Detective Britton Townsend is hot and has stunning blue eyes, but that foul mouth he saves only for her? What a waste of good looks. And no way does Val want that mouth anywhere near hers.

When the shifter community is threatened, Val is assigned to the case…and fails. So the High Council turns to the rogue shifter they'd sentenced to twenty years as a human--that same obnoxiously sexy Detective Townsend. And sends the two arch-enemies deep into the North Carolina Mountains-—together, and alone.

Being stuck in a tiny honeymoon cabin with Miss Castration and only one bed is definitely not Britton's idea of a good time. But the High Council doesn’t take no for an answer. After his shifter abilities are restored, Brit is once again susceptible to the dreaded, irreversible bonding instinct, the Drall. Thankfully, all he’s ever felt for Val is intense loathing, no reason to worry. Right? All he has to do is solve this case pronto, and he can go back to his footloose Casanova ways. That is, if they don’t kill each other first. Or worse...fall in love.

Missed the first book in the Awakening series? While these books stand alone, it can be fun to go back and see how the other couple got together. And in celebration of book #3's release, book one, The Awakening: Aidan is on sale for just 99¢ as well, so grab it while you can!

The Awakening: Aidan by Abby Niles
The Awakening #1

Is the gift of eternal love a blessing or a curse? After years of counseling grieving shifters, psychiatrist and half-shifter, Dr. Jaylin Avgar has become jaded on shifter mating. She wants to marry a human and forget about the love for eternity crap. Then she meets Aidan O’Connell, an infuriatingly laid back shifter who represents everything she doesn’t want. Yet, the more he pursues her, the more she craves a future with him. Only one thing stands in her way: death. Can she overcome her fear of losing Aidan to the one guarantee in life? Millionaire consultant, Aidan O’Connell knows he’ll one day meet a woman who’ll awaken an unrelenting mating instinct. Unfortunately, that woman is Jaylin, who has no qualms about telling him that he and his so-called eternity can shove it. When she pushes him away, he takes a drastic step so she can no longer escape. The close proximity throws the instinct into overdrive. Can he control the need engrained in him until he’s certain she will reciprocate the bond, or will a moment of weakness doom him to hell on earth?

Blog Tour: SIX by Rachel Robinson [Excerpt & Giveaway]

Sundancer #1
Rachel Robinson

Emmalina is an immortal darkling. A half human, half dark witch. Though she was born with all six emotions, she has arrived at her eighteenth birthday and all but one miserable emotion has fled her body.
The mission of the dark witches who control the new, darker world is simple—eradicate weakness. Weakness is summed up in one word. Emotion. Or, the six. Anger, fear, sadness, joy, surprise, and love.
The dark witches want her. She wants something else more.
She wants six.

He just made a promise to protect me and he is already passing me off to another circle.
He notices the scowl on my face. “Don’t get angry. You’ll be protected,” he says smiling. “I’ll send Lana with you and Bec, too if you want, but I need to get away for a bit.” His jaw works at the mention of getting away.
“I feel safer with you.” I walk to stand in front of him. I like it when we are close. I can see his eyes better. I notice new things every time I study him. His dark eyebrows slant inward, his pink lips are never completely closed, the way his straight nose is angled perfectly between his eyes and mouth. I have no comparison, but I think Finn is probably a flawless specimen of a male darkling.
“Don’t look at me like that…or say things like that. It just makes our…arrangement even more difficult.” I know it has to do with the decree but I do not understand something.
“You cannot have sex, but can you not love?”

Review: Less Than Perfect by Kelly Jensen

Less Than Perfect by Kelly Jensen
Post-Apocalyptic, Romance, Aliens
Ebook $1.99 (120 pages, EVER AFTER)
Mikayla’s read every book in her collection of post-apocalyptic novels at least twice. She thinks she's prepared for aliens taking over Earth. She's not.
Nor is she prepared for the attention of a good-looking refugee named Reg.
All Mikayla and Reg want is a safe place to see out the end of the world, hidden away from the aliens that call themselves The People, but cities of the depopulated United States not infested with The People are rife with gangs, the detritus of civilization and disease.
On a mission to restock their supplies, Mikayla and Reg are captured by The People and prepared for the procedure that will make them perfect, but no longer quite human. In order to escape, they need to rely on each other...if Mikayla can trust a man who seems too good to be true.

Author Site: website

Flawed to the bones... (2 stars)

Aliens have taken over Earth. The human race must undergo a procedure to physically perfect them to join with The People, as they call themselves. But there are those who have fled and those who have resisted dwelling out in hiding places, sometimes fighting amongst one another for food and shelter. Mikayla has a good thing going with the tiny group she's part of until they're ousted by another group. She's a bookworm with a taste for post-apocalyptic fiction that really hasn't helped her out much now that the world really is ending. Then there's her crush on Reg.

When the pair get captured by The People while trying to gather supplies it's a race against time to find their companions, escape the procedure that would take away the flaws that make them human, and a chance to discover how they really feel about each other.

I am such a sucker for romance in PA stories that I couldn't resist reading LESS THAN PERFECT. Somehow though, it managed to just not quite wow me. I just never really felt any real danger from The People. There's was a lot of telling but never any showing. Without spoiling it for anyone let me just say that if you go in expecting to find out anything about them and why they took over Earth or why they're trying to make the humans into their kind... well, you're just not going to find any answers. Because of that, I never quite connected with Reg or Mikayla.

Reg is two-dimensional and while not an unlikable hero, he's just boring. Mikayla is overly fleshed out, obsessing over her books and the physical flaws that make her human. By the last few chapters I was aching for the story to end so she'd stop with the obsessing. I get it, you want to keep your freckles and glasses, but if I have to hear about them one more friggin' time...

Without anything to really gush about I had to shell out a two star review but I think readers who have personalities like Mikayla's will love it. When the narrative has me aching for the next page to be the last for more than a third of the book it's just not one I can recommend.

Rain's been washing blood off her hands for far too long. After five years, she accepts the fact that she"s still a little crazy but feels as if she's finally gotten it all under control.

Parties, drugs, and sex flood Jude's life, and music and scandal run through his veins. He's the son of a rock god and grandson of a jazz legend. It's no surprise that his own star is on the rise, and with so many groupies vying for his attention, his childhood best friend Rain keeps him anchored in reality.

She's nothing like him--an art student with no idea of her own beauty, who would rather curl up with a sci-fi novel than party in the spotlight. Meanwhile, intense feelings rise to the surface, ones neither Rain nor Jude are prepared to deal with.

When the smoke clears, will they find that sex between best friends was a good idea, or will they discover they had been Flirting With Chaos the entire time?

An intricate pattern of colorful tattoos decorated both of his arms. It was a mural of his life—stars that intertwined with musical notes; guitars interlocked into microphones; nude, big breasted angels riding hulky demons. Those arms and that face had adorned the covers of magazines for years. Now he represented a legend of rock history. To obtain his interview would mean lots of money and skilled maneuvering through his agent, publicist, bodyguards, entourage, and any of the other people that walled him away from society.

Review: Ghosts of the Falls by Sarah Gilman

Ghosts of the Falls by Sarah Gilman
Romance, Ghosts
Ebook $1.99 (54 pages, EVER AFTER)
Determined to prove she’s fit for the family business, exorcist Jade Clarence knows the assignment waiting in Maine is her last chance. Born into a family of exorcists, Jade’s unorthodox ideas have gotten her into trouble in the past...and cost the life of a client.
After haunting a Maine state park for more than a century, Dutch Hutchinson will do whatever it takes to bring an end to his unfulfilling existence. When an act of arson brings a beautiful exorcist to town, Dutch takes corporeal form in order to spend his last hours in her company.
Jade quickly uncovers Dutch’s true identity and finds herself falling for the man behind the spirit. But when Jade’s legacy threatens their future, they will have to overcome the greatest of odds—life and death.

Author Site: website

I wanted more background but do recommend GOTF! (4 stars)

Even before a certain 90's movie featuring a murdered hero put ghosts as romantic figures on the map I was a fan of the idea. I'm not sure just what the allure for me was as a child but the idea of love beyond death seems universally appealing. I wasn't quite sure how Gilman could pull two characters together romantically in such a short story and if I'm totally honest, I'd have probably given this one a five star rating if it had been a full length novel.

Jade comes from a family of exorcists but has questioned the foundational rules of the trade to the point she's become an outsider. When she arrives at a state park to meet with a client who wants a ghost removed from the area she does so without the family's approval. Proving that not all spirits need to be destroyed, that not all ghosts are murderous and violent, would be a game changer. Unbeknownst to Jade, the client giving her the tour is in fact the very ghost whom she has been asked to exorcise. Dutch has grown weary of his ghostly afterlife but in Jade he finds a renewed interest in existing. When she discovers his true identity everything they know about life and death and love is changed.

I really enjoyed GHOSTS OF THE FALLS. It was such a great concept though, that I was a bit disappointed to not get more backstory on Jade's family. I felt a bit cheated to not know what truly motivated her desire to change how the family conducted their business with the spirit world. Having a little more connection to her in that way would have given the outcome a stronger, more satisfying finish. I loved that Jade was standing up against her brothers, fighting not only for what she thought was right, what was worth changing, but also for the love she wanted.

GHOSTS OF THE FALLS is a terrific read for the romantic who loves an ethereal feel, steamy intimacy between the hero and heroine, and the sort of story that not only has a great ending but leaves your imagination churning. Highly recommended to fill a chilly day with the warmth of a happy ending.

Review: Bad Cop by Angela McAllister

Bad Cop (Bad #2) by Angela McCallister
Category Romance, Paranormal Romance, Vampires
Ebook $2.99 (171 pages, COVET)
A cop who tosses the rulebooks to get his way…
Vampire Ian McCready doesn’t care for Alice Capshaw’s opinions about his version of justice. Her humanity makes her off-limits, but that does nothing to lessen his overwhelming desire for her. To Alice, Ian is just another bad cop as detestable as the one who destroyed her family. She’s attracted to him, yes, but he threatened his way into her agency’s murder case and has too many secrets.
When a new case resurrects ghosts Ian believed long dead and buried, his law-bending ways might result in his execution. The second Alice becomes a target, his cold heart flares into blinding existence. But following the law for her sake may end with devastating results.

Author Site: website

My new favorite couple! (5 stars)

Every once in a while a book comes along that I enjoy so much I struggle to review it. Where I sit in front of the computer screen and squish my face up in concentration only to gasp a bit and splutter in frustration. BAD COP is one of those.

I really liked BAD MOUTH because it had a great world set up, a world worthy of urban fantasy. The world is the kind you want to dive into for hours and meet every major player in it. While I enjoyed Kade and Valerie a lot, they just weren't quite a perfect fit for my tastes as a reader. The hints at Alice and Ian had me really interested in what BAD COP would deliver and let me tell you... McCallister knocked it out of the ballpark. If you enjoy characters with ridiculously thick chemistry you will love Alice and Ian.

I don't often love heroines, I just have a weird tendency not to relate to them as much as I relate to heroes, but Alice was an instant favorite for me. I loved that she was such a fighter, so capable and likable. Killian and Alice's back and forth of calling one another "wench" and "hick" was one of my favorite parts of their courtship, it made their relationship feel real to me. They definitely have a playful and passionate relationship that I think most readers will love.

While their romance is the heart of the storyline there's also a mystery to be unraveled and it was one area I was eager to figure out. It's a rare thing when an author can pull a fast one on me and surprise me, especially in a category romance (I mean, the genre thrives on predictable tropes). To have a shocking moment was like finding a nice suitcase and then opening it up to find it was full of money. lol

Suffice it to say that if I'd found any flaws in this one I'd have had the review up much sooner. I gave it some time in hopes I'd find something negative to say about it and I got nothing. If you enjoy paranormal romances and in particular couples who have a lot of sensual tension and banter that's amusing you should give it a read. One of my favorite romance couples to date and a series I am eager to force on my friends. ;)

Piers, the Head of the Order and an ancient vampire, is intrigued by the woman who comes to him for help. She’s beautiful and seemingly kind, but she’s hiding something. And he’ll find out who she is and what she really wants once he uses his power to get inside her head. But Piers has no idea that Roz is immune to his mind-control...or that he is simply a pawn in her dangerous mission for freedom.

Trouble Comes Knocking by Mary Duncanson

A girl who can’t forget…

Twenty-two-year-old Lucy Carver is like Sherlock Holmes in ballet flats, but her eidetic memory is more albatross than asset, and something she usually keeps hidden. When she notices that something’s amiss at her dead-end job, she jumps at the chance to finally use her ability for good. That is, until, a man is murdered, and she becomes the target of the killer.

A detective on his first case…

Detective Eli Reyes is overbearing, pompous, way too hot for Lucy’s own good, and seems as determined to ruin her relationship with her boyfriend, John, as finding the murderer. He brings Lucy in on the case, thinking she can help him get to the truth, only to cut her loose when he realizes he’s gotten far more than he ever bargained for.

A past that won’t go away…

When memories from her childhood invade her present, Lucy discovers a mystery bigger than she could have imagined. With the killer still after her, and Eli nowhere to be found, she takes things into her own hands, determined to expose the truth no matter what—before trouble comes knocking…again.

Hushed by Kelley York

Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn't protect his best friend, Vivian, from what happened when they were kids, so he's never stopped trying to protect her from everything else. It doesn't matter that Vivian only uses him when hopping from one toxic relationship to another. Archer is always there, waiting to be noticed.

Then along comes Evan, the only person who's ever cared about Archer without a single string attached. The harder he falls for Evan, the more Archer sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.

But Viv has her hooks in deep, and when she finds out about the murders Archer's committed and his relationship with Evan, she threatens to turn him in if she doesn't get what she wants...

And what she wants is Evan's death, and for Archer to forfeit his last chance at redemption.

Blog Tour: Hunter's Moon by Lisa Kessler [+ giveaway]

The Art of Villainy
Hi everyone!
I’m excited to be visiting today!
I’m Lisa Kessler, and I love a good villain.  I’m also a huge Disney fan. The Evil Queen has always been my favorite Disney villain. If you think about the movie, Snow White, there would be no story without the Queen and her twisted relationship with the magic mirror. Another element that endears her to me is that moment when she realizes the Huntsman has failed to follow her orders, and she is willing to do the dirty work herself.
A good villain becomes the hero of their own story.
Another favorite around my house is Jareth, the Goblin King from Labyrinth. Although he’s kidnapped the heroine’s baby brother, placed her in a magical maze, and often cheats in order to slow her down, you’re drawn to him because he’s going after what he believes is right.  The heroine asked for the goblins to take her baby brother away. It wasn’t his fault she changed her mind… Or that’s what Jareth believes.
I enjoy writing villains too because it’s almost like staring into a mirror and seeing the book from a completely different, backwards angle. The villain believes in his cause, regardless of the cost.
And then there is the anti-hero. A character who has maybe played the villain, believed in his cause, but something happens that changes his reflection in the mirror. Sebastian in my new Moon Series has experienced this. When the series began with MOONLIGHT, Sebastian believed in Nero’s mission completely.
But everything changes when he’s sent to Reno bring back a female jaguar who was never bitten, and had no knowledge of Nero. As the series unfolds and Sebastian realizes he’s been deceived, he’s playing a dangerous game of cat and mouse, dancing over the line between right and wrong as his carefully constructed world breaks apart.
In HUNTER’S MOON, his world continues to tilt as he struggles to remain loyal and we as readers discover how deeply he is entangled in the workings of Nero.
