Contemporary Romance, Military

Tall, dark, and lethal...
Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey's tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome--pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.
With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.
Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge...

A great series starter! (4 stars)
I'm quite certain I'll be the only reviewer who had a hard time reading this one that still liked it. This is one of those stories that somehow feels like everything but the kitchen sink has been tossed in and it's kind of cringe-inducing. But also fun.
Becca reminds me a lot of previous Kaye heroines I've read and in a good way. She's strong in some areas and needs help in others. If you loved Megan in NORTH OF NEED, you'll like Becca. In contrast, Nick's a little bit enigmatic, and holds back, with good reason. If you like a hero that's a little brooding without being a big downer he's a great one. I really liked that he had an artistic side and a warrior side, big kudos to Kaye for creating a well rounded hero.
Truth be told, it wasn't the romance that I really enjoyed in this one and if you're more interested in that aspect of the story you might find this a slow read. I tend to lean more toward the adventure aspects and Nick bringing his team back together to do a rescue mission was exciting. Strangely enough my favorite character wound up being Nick's younger brother whom I think I won't be alone in book boyfriending. There's a series arc that starts here that reminds me of the much beloved Black Dagger Brotherhood series so if you like a broad storyline to carry you from romance to romance make sure you check this out.
While it certainly had some slow points and the action was not as big of a part of the story as I'd have liked, there's plenty of snort-out-loud humor and a lot of between-the-sheets (and in front of a mirror and so on...) action to keep ya busy. This is definitely a read for fans of military romances and 'brotherhood' series. I'm definitely recommending a pre-order for the next Hard Ink novel.
Notes: ARC received via Edelweiss.
