Weekend Reading [06/28-06/30] :: The bad, the good, & the read...

How are y'all this weekend? I've had a rotten week and I'm just in a nasty old funk of a mood.

Some of the crappy highlights include canceling my dance party because only 2 people were coming, my workouts being interrupted on 3 of my 5 days, and the top of my reusable K-cup accidentally got munched in the garbage disposal. It's all just making me frowny and hermit-ish.

I have, however, had a couple of good things going on. I finished a recipe post I'd been really wanting to get up, I found a nicely distracting game called Hellfire that's addictive, and I've had great reads!

This weekend I get to start Lisa Kessler's MOONLIGHT! Now if only I could say I was doing it on a secluded tropical beach. *dreamy sigh*

What are you reading this weekend and where do you wish you were doing it? -- Rhi

Review: Baby & Bump by Brooke Moss

Baby & Bump (The This & That Series #1) by Brooke Moss
Contemporary Romance
Paperback $10.99 (294 pages, SELFPUBLISHED)
Ebook $2.99

At thirty years old, caterer Lexie Baump has a lot on her plate. With a business to run, she doesn’t have time for any added distractions. But one momentary indiscretion adds a little hiccup to Lexie’s plans. She’s pregnant. With no relationship prospects.
But if Lexie thought fighting morning sickness while running a catering business was hard, enter Dr. Fletcher Haybee. Their connection is instant, and their love of vintage rock tee shirts and Elvis music is enough to bond them for life. There are just two minor problems.
One: he’s dating her oversexed best friend. Two: he’s also her obstetrician.
With events to cater, awkward OB appointments to endure, and her ever-growing baby bump making it impossible to close her jeans, Lexie has to find a way to curb her undeniable attraction toward Fletcher and focus on her new role as a working mother. But it certainly isn’t easy when its clear Fletcher himself feels the same magnetic pull toward Lexie.
Can Lexie leave the gorgeous Fletcher for her best friend to chew up and spit out, or will she cave to her feelings and find love in the stirrups? Life is about to get messy, and we're not just talking about crumbs in the car seat...

Author Site: Brooke's Blog

Unconventional, sweet, and packed with LOL moments!  (5 stars)

Lexie Baump is thirty, successful, and after an epic indiscretion... pregnant. After a messy divorce she pulled herself up by the boot straps and started her catering company, Eats & Sweets, with her best frenemy, Marisol. Getting pregnant with no baby-daddy is a complication she really doesn't need. But this might be her one chance at motherhood and with the support of her cousin, Candace, she's determined to embrace it. First step, seeing her new obstetrician.

Dr. Fletcher Haybee, however, turns out to be everything Lexie could want in a guy. He's kind and quirky... and drop-dead gorgeous. With her mom trying to force a husband on her at every turn, morning sickness that lasts all day, and her busy catering schedule, it's only natural that she'd pretend no interest when Marisol decides she wants Fletcher. But the spark between them won't be denied as things grow ever more complicated right alongside her protruding baby bump.

It's no secret that I might just be Brooke Moss' number one fan. She's the author who pulled me from the paranormal shelves into more contemporary waters with her humorous and heartfelt, THE WHAT-IF GUY. Since then I've come to love her way of making people, not just characters, come to life on each page. They're funny and geeky, sexy and somber, thrust into situations that are relatable and emotional. And she's done it again with BABY & BUMP.

If you've ever had a surprise pregnancy you'll immediately empathize with Lexie. That's one of those really emotionally tumultuous things that blends fear and joy and anger and excitement into one big indescribable mess and I was feeling it right alongside Lexie. Quirky and responsible, it seems like a mistake she just wouldn't make and the mystery of just who the baby's father is and why she doesn't want to tell anyone is a nail-biting thread you'll want to unwind. In contrast, Fletcher is such an open book. I melted to mush right away with his Southern charm and how he's raising his daughter alone. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in finding a good dad to be one of the sexiest things on Earth.

The supporting cast is where a lot of the funnies come in and I just felt at home with them. Lexie's BFF cousin and her husband are adorable. Patsy, her mom, both annoys and yet is endearing in her own odd way. Her brothers and sister-in-law provide an added depth that makes the story strong. Then there's Marisol. I can't resist referring to her as the frenemy because she does and says things that if she were my friend I'd probably lose my cool over. I disliked her intensely and that eventually grew into hate. But then Moss did something... showed a side of Marisol that was unexpected and gave her some depth that I was anticipating. It made me cry and realize that I had been judging her only on what I was 'seeing' and that maybe there was so much more to her than I knew.

While it's definitely a romance, BABY & BUMP, is very much about the relationships that define us as family, specifically as parents. I just loved it. I laughed and cried and had to resist the urge to skip to the end. If you love quirky characters, single parent romances, lots of humor, and a heartfelt happy ending you have to read this book!

Review: Suddenly Beautiful by Boone Brux [Blog Tour + giveaway!]

But the next morning, Tor pretends like nothing happened, leaving Nikki with an emerging drive for combat—after all, turns out she is the daughter of Ares and she's about to make her mama proud.

Everything I expect from a COVET! (5 stars)

Toraos Stephanos just wants to launch his new cosmetics line without the interference of the pantheon and their demi-god offspring mucking it up. His assistant, Nikki, has no idea of her demi-goddess status until a bottle of Ambrosia leads the pair to a passionate night between them. But when Tor acts like nothing happened, hurting Nikki, who has longed to catch his eye for so long the simple business plan he had in mind becomes anything but. When Nikki's parental secret is revealed it's only natural that the daughter of the god of war fight for what she wants.

Oh dear readers, this is the story that the Covet imprint has been waiting for. A perfect blend of contemporary romance that could stand on its own without the paranormal elements... but made all the better for them. Even though I really get my geek on for any twist on mythology, I'm admittedly excruciatingly bored with the Greeks getting all the action. Yet, SUDDENLY BEAUTIFUL managed to make it interesting again. Tor is just so darned likable, he's handsome and wealthy, but well adjusted and confident without being a jerk. It's a rare thing for me to be rooting more for the hero to finally get the girl than the other way around and that was really refreshing.

Maybe it's just me but... (1 stars)

I don't give a lot of single star reviews because I'm usually pretty sure going in that I'll probably like the story at least a little. FAMOUSLY ENGAGED sounded like a fun concept, who doesn't like chefs and rock stars as protagonists? Alas, the plot is so contrived and the relationship so forced and lacking in chemistry I almost didn't read beyond the first few chapters.

Beth is of the romance heroine type known as the too-stupid-to-live heroine. She, quite literally, just welcomes a stranger into her home without immediately recognizing that he's pretty much the most famous rock star in the world. Seriously? Jake, on the other hand, goes halfway around the world on some hare-brained scheme because he's heard so much about Beth and thinks his secret half-sister is possibly being cheated on. In the blurb it's vague enough to be passable but in execution it's really bad.

There is no chemistry between Beth and Jake. Every thought they have about the other feels like it was placed there to further the plot, not the organic flow of real-ish characters. Add in ridiculously cheesy secondary characters, Beth getting bowled over by everyone around her, and the fact that her mother just died... yet she can move right on with a stranger within 24 hours of the funeral? No. Just no. The only thing I wound up liking about FAMOUSLY ENGAGED is the cover. Looking for a great read featuring a chef or a rock star? Try Gina Gordon's A TASTE OF TROUBLE or RECIPE FOR SATISFACTION for chefs (which both earned high ratings from me) and Olivia Cunning's Sinners or Sole Regret series (which, in full disclosure, I haven't read but have great reviews from my blogger friends) for rock stars.

Weekend Reading [06/21-06/23] :: Street Teamin', Fandom/Friendships, & the #CovetBash!

TGIF! What a busy week I've had. So much going on online this week. Tons of blog tours, hops, scavenger hunts, contests, twitter parties... I feel like I'm just coming out of a haze of socialization of epic proportions. On top of that I had some non-blog related reading to finish and review, a sort of social media class to work on for my direct sales business, planning a big pre-independence-day dance party, and I started up an attempt at getting my fitness and eating back on a healthy level with some inspiration from the kick-ass ladies of the Maxwell Mob. Seriously, I'm the quiet street teamer most of the time and these guys are so much fun!
But before I jump into what I'm reading this weekend I have a favor to ask... one of my longest online friends and I met through our mutual Star Wars obsession about 10 years ago. Now she's in a contest of sorts at Geek and Sundry. Drop by and give her a vote but then make sure you actually watch and comment on her video. See... back in the days before I realized Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance existed I read pretty much nothing but Star Wars expanded universe books. What the hell is an expanded universe? Think officially licensed fanfiction, sort of. lol I even have friends who've named their kids after SWEU characters!

Anywho, this was part of how we met and after kind of being out of touch beyond status updates this video got us chatting again. ☺
Speaking of fun and awesome things... did you attend the #CovetBash on twitter last night? Absolutely hilarious and fun with so many great authors and bloggers attending. Haven't read any Covet books yet? I've read all of them so far and I'm about to start the one that releases next week. I haven't loved them all but there is something for every kind of PNR fan, check out my reviews of them.
So whatcha reading this weekend? I'm working on Brooke Moss' BABY & BUMP which comes out on July 2nd. So far it is really fabulous. I sometimes worry I love Brooke's books because they're set in the Pacific Northwest but really it's just her great sense of humor and a certain realism that grabs my heart and gives it a yank. I'm hoping to get it done and start on LUCK OF THE DRAGON. Here's hoping my weekend is slow and quiet so I can read like mad.

Guestpost: Author Rebecca Zanetti [UNDER THE COVERS Blog Tour]

Thank you to RhiReading for having me over!  It’s so nice to be here celebrating the release of Under the Covers, which is the second book in the Maverick Montana series.  So, I was asked ten reasons Montana (and Idaho) men trump the rest.  It was difficult, but I’ve narrowed down ten reasons (out of a lot more!)
  1. They wear chaps.  You haven’t lived until you’ve seen an actual man in actual chaps.  (Not the kind with bare butts that you see as jokes on television).  The real, leather, dusty, cowboy stalking toward you in chaps.  Trust me.  You’ll never be the same.

  1. Long, slow, devastating kisses.  Men who live in the wild country know a good thing when they see it, and know where to spend time.  Kissing is one of those things, and these guys love to practice and get it right.

  1. They’re comfortable in the wild.  Montana is wide, open, and wild.  This is a man who braves the elements, the wildlife, and the land itself…and wins.

  1. They’re survivors.  Again, if the world goes to crap, these guys survive…and will make sure you survive, too.  They hunt, they fish, and they endure.

  1. A life full of contrasts.  Ever see a tough guy break a bronc?  Yeah?  How about the same guy picking wild flowers on the way to a date?  Sure, he might have to fight off bear and wild moose, but he’ll win, and hand over that bouquet.  How can you not love that?

  1. They’re protective.  How can they not be?  They know what’s out there—hungry bear, rampaging moose, and even tulip-eating deer.  This guy will jump in front of you and a snarling wolf…in a second.

  1. Hard bodies.  This is not to be ignored.  Working outside, riding stallions…it leads to some very impressive muscles.  Ripped abs are okay to love.  Honest!

  1. They appreciate femininity…and strength.  Hey, it’s not easy living somewhere the weather can be out to get you.  This is a guy that’ll appreciate your strong side…and be just as happy with your heels and pearls.  Unless your car breaks down in the snowstorm.  Then you should wear boots, which I’m sure he will have already made sure were in your car…just in case.

  1. Right and wrong matter.  Justice and honor still have a place in a lot of hearts, and especially in a real cowboy’s heart.

  1. They love completely.  There’s no half-way for a guy who fights nature on a daily basis, so when he give his heart, it’s the total deal.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my top ten list today.  Ever meet a real cowboy?  Just curious.  I have, and all of these things are true.
 Opposites don’t attract. They ignite.

The small Montana town near the Kooskia reserve seemed like the perfect place for Juliet Montgomery to hide from her not-so-law-abiding family. But when her peace is shattered by a break-in and threatening phone calls, it’s clear someone back in New York knows where she is. It’s time to plan her getaway, and fast—but first, she needs to tie up a few loose ends and find out exactly what the town’s sexy cowboy sheriff is hiding.

Sheriff Quinn Lodge has enough demons of his own to know when someone’s hiding something, and he’s determined to uncover what’s beneath Juliet’s uptight, city-girl exterior—preferably one piece of clothing at a time. But when their chemistry goes from fizzy to full-on explosive, things start getting complicated.

How can Juliet stay beneath the covers with Quinn, when doing so means blowing her cover?

I have Rhi-turned!

I'm Cheering for Flash!
Hey guys! I'm back from my vacation... which really wasn't one but was a somewhat spirit rebuilding break from emails and deadlines. Alas, I'm exhausted from working my butt off doing garage cleaning, helping the hubs build a weathering yard for bad bird (I'll explain that some other time), and all of the last-week-of-school hulla-bullooh. Oh and I didn't even mention the stepkid being in the hospital, teaching a class on how to hold a Facebook party, or the joys of having to rewatch the entire season of GoT before being allowed to watch the now infamous episode while avoiding spoilers. That last one was HARD.
But anywho, I'm back and wading through about 1.5k emails, getting started on a couple of books that need reviewing, and praying I can get this month's schedule sorted out before July comes! In the meantime you HAVE to run over to join in the Fight Night fun with our fellow Kit Rocha fans. This week is Jasper vs. Flash.
Since we all know Jas really well I decided to go with the underdog and cheer on Flash... besides look at that freaking awesome pic Bree and Donna chose for him. I love it... I seriously make that same face and fist at my teenager at least five times a day... and maybe at the dog about the same... and everytime an Alpha hero does something boorish... and everytime the cashiers at Walmart give me grief about coupons... and... okay, I could go on and on 'cause I make that same face a lot. So Flash it is! Disagree? Run on over (click my cheering squad button) and give Jas some love and enter to win a freaking kick-ass O'Kane flask.
See you guys more tomorrow! -- Rhi

If you're a Covet reader, but aren't a LUX reader... (4 stars)

Sooo... I kind of wanted to be the black sheep of the bunch and read OBSESSION without having read any of the LUX series yet. It's one of those series I realllly want to read but haven't gotten to yet. Since it's a Young Adult series and this is an adult spin-off of sorts I really wanted to be the reader/reviewer who could help other Covet imprint addicts decide if they wanted to jump in now or if they'd be completely lost.

Good news Covet fans, OBSESSION does a great job of giving you the world building without mind-numbing info dumps, brand new to the world I had no problem picking up what I needed to understand who the Arum were and their Luxen enemies. While this really doesn't work for me as a category romance which makes the release of it as a Covet kinda shaky, it is a serious steal at the category price point. If you like paranormals but are getting a little bored with vamps and shifters this is definitely one to pick up.

Because this is an adult spin-off of a YA series, OBSESSION, is seriously sexy. Almost to the point of being gratuitous. Almost. I really wasn't able to buy into the pairing of Serena and Hunter as an emotionally bound couple but the sexual chemistry is scorching. If you dig Alpha and Gamma males in romance you will enjoy Hunter a lot. I will say, however, that I was really unhappy to see a misogynistic reference flying around his thoughts twice. If a real life dude used it I'd be annoyed so I really hate it when a fictional dude (they're supposed to be better than that darnit!) uses the V word in a derogatory manner. With how the story starts off the only thing I didn't dig about Serena was how quickly she seemed to move on from her friend's murder to getting freaky with Hunter. Otherwise, she's smart, determined, and very likable.

Overall, if you've enjoyed the more action-packed and steamy releases from Covet, over the goofy ones you will find OBSESSION a great read. I wouldn't go quite so far as to say that young adult readers of the LUX series shouldn't read it but just know there's a lot of sexy sex generally considered suitable for the 18 and up audience. I think this is actually an awesome place to get started reading these intertwined series for readers like myself who love a good 'romp and stomp' to fill a weekend. Highly recommended to adult LUX readers and Covet imprint fans who enjoy darker paranormal romances.
