Author Site: website

Whet your appetite for more Kessler! (4 stars)

Tegan Ashton is a young woman trying to move past a terrifying attack that left her scarred. When a chance encounter with her attacker leaves her with no other options she hires a private investigator. Gabe isn't just any P.I., he's got generations of demon slayer heritage in his blood. If they're going to hunt down Tegan's attacker they've got to work together, learning from one another. But it's hard to keep their relationship strictly business when their chemistry draws them together like a moth and a flame. As long as it's nothing more than physical they can make it work... until emotions cloud their judgment and it all goes to hell.

If you're one of my followers you're probably sick of hearing me gush about how much I adore Kessler and her work. Well guess what... if you are then stop reading this review. ;)

While BEG ME TO SLAY isn't my favorite of her novels it's the one I'm going to tell all newbies to try first. There's luscious chemistry between Tegan and Gabe, I loved the push and pull they had with one another. That she became a fighter after she was attacked made me have instant liking for her. Nothing wrong with a character being brought down by something like that but I loved that Tegan decided to be so proactive. Gabe is classic Kessler, strong but not a bulldozer, romantic but not in a cheesy way.

The only thing I didn't like about BMTS was that it was at category length. As a fan of her longer work it was hard not having all of the intricate details of the world and a mythology to chew on. If you've read her other series consider this one the appetizer version. It's a page turner and had a great world, it's just not as intricate as her full length work. Covet addicts—like myself—should definitely pick this one up not only to sample the latest authorial inductee to the Covet club but because this is the first slayer story we've really had.

A RhiReading recommended read for Covet lovers, Kessler fans, and as a perfect starting point for newbies to both the author and the imprint.

And on that note... RhiReading is on hiatus until February!

Dear readers,

I know, I know. You guys can't live without me. You're stricken with terror at the thought I won't be here for a whole 6 weeks. You're already opening another tab so you can start a petition against blogger vacations...

I had to get sarcastic, it's in my nature. ;)

But seriously my dear readers, for several months now I've been having to drag myself out of a funk almost daily just to get any kind of content up. I love blogging and reading and interacting with everyone, I'm just in need of a break.

That image above—if you switched reading and dishes—has been my life of late.

The pressure on book bloggers is far more intense than we show. Most of us make no money blogging, work jobs and/or are raising families, have relationships and homes and pets and responsibilities to them. And yet we blog out of a sheer passion for fiction and connecting to others who share that. Even so, daily emails from publishers and authors and tour organizers, keeping an organized schedule, formatting and preparing posts, writing thoughtful and insightful reviews (not to mention reposting those everywhere), planning and delivering on giveaways, building an audience through social media and commenting on other blogs and such can take a toll. It is a full time job with lots of over-time. We try to fit in everyone and everything, or at least I try to fit as much as I can, and saying no is so hard when you want to do it all. So after a little coaching from a fellow blogger I decided that my original plan of a 10 day break wasn't nearly enough.

I will still be around on social media a bit and will try and answer any reader emails but aside from maybe a review here or there I will not be posting any new content to RhiReading until February 1st. Reading has felt like a chore lately and once I slay my to-be-read-for-review list I want to read something I didn't sign up for. Maybe I'll even take one whole week away from books and marathon one of my fandoms... or two... or three. Anyone for a LOTR marathon with me?

I hope you have a wonderful holiday and send you my very best wishes for the new year, may you resolve to read lots of great books!

With love and warm wishes,

-- Rhi

Review: Black Widow Demon by Paula Altenburg

Black Widow Demon (Demon Outlaws #2) by Paula Altenburg
Urban Fantasy, Western, Romance
Ebook $5.45 (336 pages, ENTANGLED EDGE)
Paperback $14.99

Passionate and headstrong, half-demon Raven is nearly executed on the orders of her fundamentalist stepfather. She escapes from the burning stake using the gifts of her otherworldly heritage and the help of a mortal stranger named Blade. Now she’s set on revenge, and only quiet, intense Blade stands in her way.
A retired assassin weary of the weight of his past, Blade has crossed the desert to seek out a new life. His journey is interrupted when his conscience demands he help Raven find an old friend who can help her. Saving her from her need for revenge and delivering her into the hands of loved ones means he’s one step closer to redemption.
But as Blade’s sense of duty becomes something more and threats, both mortal and immortal, stalk the woman he can’t abandon, he could very well fall back into the life he’s trying so hard to escape.

Author Site: website

A meaty, highly conceptual read. (4 stars)

If you loved THE DEMON'S DAUGHTER as much as I did, you don't need to read reviews, just go buy this book. The world of the Demon Outlaws series is phenomenally built and threaded with both elements of urban fantasy and westerns while packing a romantic core. Only one other series that I know of has done this and I love the blend, it allows for some interesting concepts.

In the previously mentioned title, Blade was a secondary character with a shadowy past but the qualities of a hero in the making. I was thrilled to discover he was indeed, the hero of BLACK WIDOW DEMON, but really nervous his heroine wouldn't meet my standards since I liked him so well. Raven is one worthy heroine and her own complicated storyline makes her a strong, motivated woman with a compassionate edge I found enjoyable. As a couple they had great push-pull chemistry and their steamy scenes were almost hard to read without feeling like I was intruding because of how believable they are as a match.

What stalled me a little on quite loving the book as a whole was the many new twists and turns of the world. They weren't bad, I just had a difficult time keeping up with how everything had changed after TDD and then continued to find new changes in BWD. It is a highly conceptual world and throwing a lot more irons into the fire just distracted me for some reason. If you're a Meljean Brook fan who devours complicated world building this will be familiar to you and you'll love it.

If thorough and intricate world building, flawless hero/heroine chemistry, and passionate love scenes are your cup of tea you should most definitely get your copy of BLACK WIDOW DEMON. It can't stand alone though, so I recommend starting with THE DEMON'S DAUGHTER and be sure to pre-order the third book in the series, THE DEMON CREED (currently set for a May 2014 release).

Review: Christmas Past by Susanna Fraser

Christmas Past by Susanna Fraser
Romance, Time Travel
Ebook $1.99 (39 pages, EVER AFTER)
Time-traveling PhD student Sydney Dahlquist’s first mission sounded simple enough—spend two weeks in December 1810 collecting blood samples from the sick and wounded of Wellington’s army, then go home to modern-day Seattle and Christmas with her family. But when her time machine breaks, stranding her in the past, she must decide whether to sacrifice herself to protect the timeline or to build a new life—and embrace a new love—two centuries before her time.
Rifle captain Miles Griffin has been fascinated by the tall, beautiful "Mrs. Sydney" from the day he met her caring for wounded soldiers. When he stumbles upon her time travel secret on Christmas Eve, he vows to do whatever it takes to seduce her into making her home in his present—by his side.

Love time-travel romance & the holiday season? (4 stars)

When it comes to time travel romances there are a lot of places and times I'm just not interested. That almost kept me from reading CHRISTMAS PAST but I'm really glad it didn't. While simplistic and plenty easy to pick apart when it comes to the pseudo-science of it, CHRISTMAS PAST is one of those short and sweet stories I thrive on this time of year.

Sydney is a modern woman trapped in the past when her time machine stops working. She was only there to observe and take samples, time travelers are scientists with a strict code to follow should anything prevent them from returning. Set on following the code to prevent making changes to the past by being there beyond her mission she is discovered by the handsome captain, Miles Griffin. She's been very attracted to Miles and finds that the feeling is mutual. Could sharing one night—a lonely Christmas Eve—destroy the future as she knew it?

Yep, a simple and short story of love discovered under impossible circumstances, on Christmas Eve. It's terrific in that Fraser doesn't dwell too much on the details of the time, nor the details of the science of time travel. She covers just what we need to know in order to understand the situation then focuses the tale on Miles and Sydney. While he's not as well developed as I'd have liked it suits the short format and would make for a nice got-the-shopping-and-wrapping done treat to get you in the holiday spirit.

Blog Tour: Guest Post w/ author Gina Gordon [+ giveaways!]

Dear readers, I am so excited to have Gina Gordon on the blog today! Not only is she a fellow foodie, she writes delicious romances too. She was sweet enough to give us a mouth-watering recipe to try this holiday season and an EXCLUSIVE giveaway just for my readers! So read on and be sure and ask Santa for a copy of RECIPE FOR ATTRACTION if you've been nice this year... and if you've been naughty... well you deserve to treat yourself to it. ;) -- Rhi

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is going to my Nona’s house on Christmas Eve for an extravaganza of fish and seafood. And when I say extravaganza, I mean an 8-foot table full of so much food that there is hardly any room to put your dinner plate.

One of my favorite things to eat is my dad’s famous shrimp with breadcrumbs. It’s so simple and so delicious. Of course, when making it, he always ends up with oil splattered all over his dress shirt. He never learns J

Since dad would probably tell me the recipe is “just cook the shrimp and breadcrumbs together and add lemon”, I thought I would supply you with a real recipe, or at least a play on a recipe I found from the Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives guru, Guy Fieri.

While I don’t know if they will be as good as dad’s…..they look pretty damn good and I will be trying the recipe!

Shrimp With Breadcrumbs

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
4 tablespoons butter
2 cups breadcrumbs (fresh breadcrumbs are best)
8 large cloves of garlic, finely minced
1 pound uncooked, peeled , deveined shrimp (any size you like)
⅓ cup fresh Italian parsley, chopped
Finely grated zest of 1 large lemon
Juice of lemon

Directions:
1. Heat 4 tbsp olive oil and 2 tbsp butter in a large non stick skillet over medium heat. Add the breadcrumbs and half the minced garlic. Saute until the crumbs are golden and crisp (8-10 minutes). Transfer to a bowl and set aside.
2. Heat the remaining oil and butter in the same skillet over medium high heat and add the shrimps (seasoned with salt and pepper) and the rest of the garlic. Sauté until the shrimp are opaque in the middle (3-4 minutes).
4. Stir in the parsley, all the lemon zest and juice and the breadcrumb mix.
5. Toss and taste for seasonings.
This real recipe actually includes pasta, so you may want to tweak the amount of ingredients. For the full recipe follow the link below.

Review: Spring Moon by HRH Princess Sophie Audouin-Mamikonian

Spring Moon (Indiana Teller #1) by HRH Princess Sophie Audouin-Mamikonian
Young Adult, Werewolves
Ebook $3.63 (338 pages, ENTANGLED TEEN)
Amid the expansive plains of Montana, the Lykos Ranch stretches for miles. The inhabitants who live in near isolation from the outside world are members of the most powerful clan of werewolves in North America. Among them lives just one human: Indiana Teller.
Grandson of the clan’s leader and offspring of a werewolf father and a mysterious yet human mother, Indiana is rejected by his peers and heads to the University of Montana to find a normal life. Despite warnings from his grandparents, he falls in love with a beautiful human, Katerina.
Before too long, he is the victim of an accident that would have killed him had he not miraculously vanished at the moment of impact. Are these strange occurrences just chance or the machinations of a hidden enemy out to destroy him? Facing his destiny, Indiana will have to choose who to believe, and who to love.

Something lost in translation... (3 stars)

My taste in reading varies but always comes back to supernatural elements. When the opportunity to rose to give SPRING MOON a read I quickly dismissed it. But if there's one thing that I have a hard time turning down it's stories set in the state I've lived in for most of my life. I figured if anyone could give it a fair examination it would be the gal who likes supernatural and Young Adult fiction that lives in the area the story takes place.

Alas, from the get-go I found that there was just something foreign about it. I've read translations before—this was originally in French—and found a similar issue sometimes. Perhaps it's because I know our culture here intimately, and I tried to excuse it with thoughts like "well, if you were a supernatural raised in a secluded, secretive community..." but I just never got past it. I was disappointed in the little things like the lack of attention to our climate (December is usually very cold, we were subzero for the past 6 days for example), culture (Missoula is kind of known as the hippie town), and well, we call it U-of-M and constantly seeing it said "UM" was driving me crazy.

The werewolves and other creatures (for lack of a better word) in the world of the Indiana Teller series are quite unique. It was the main saving grace of the story. That, and some of the secondary characters. Indiana himself, was a bit of a tough sell as the narrator for me. He just wasn't very likable and I never could figure out what made Katerina bother with him, let alone like him. I did, however, like Chuck a lot.

It's action-packed, has a solid amount of mystery and a story arc that will make for a strong series but the things I didn't like about it kept me from really enjoying it as a whole. I think if you're looking for something to appeal to a teenaged reluctant reader they might really enjoy this one. It's has romance, some humor, and is well paced. If you're an adult YA fan with tastes similar to my own you should probably give it a pass.

Weekend Reading [12/06-12/08] :: Being Nice & Cold!

This is my current weather. When I got up it was -25° feels like -37°. I was whining about it yesterday and someone asked why I still live here and that is a really good question. lol It certainly isn't for the lovely weather.

The forecast for the weekend is looking a little nicer but it was also supposed to be above zero today and I don't see that happening. In fact, my son's school's pipes froze and broke yesterday. Instead of sending the kids home they got porta-potties for them to use and made them wear their coats. Apparenly, here in Montana we really are badasses.

I've had a busy week preparing for the holidays, participating in several events being hosted by publishers/authors, and trying to plan my blog break. I've decided to go dark from the 18th of December to the 29th of January. Let's be honest here... when you've been a solo reviewer/blogger for 5 years you can really feel stagnant. In the past 2 years I have maybe read 5 fiction books that weren't review copies. I'm behind on some of my favorite series! So I figure this gives me a chance to do a little of that while I attempt to stay warm. ☺

So what's on your nightstand for weekend reading? I'm working through Eat, Brains, Love by Jeff Hart and Black Widow Demon by Paula Altenburg. The latter is kind of sold as being a bit like Warm Bodies but I'm not digging it. I am, however, enjoying BWD a lot. Blade was a character I was eager to know more about in the first book so it's making the somewhat slow action worth pacing myself through.

Speaking of pacing... earlier this year I decided I was sick of being out of shape and that I was going to try and be more active. I've done okay and found a fitness vlogger that really speaks to me and my personality. I'm sharing this because she did a Hunger Games fitness parody that is just too freaking awesome and it just went live yesterday. I think you guys will LOVE it even if you don't exercise.

How clever is that eh? I actually haven't done it yet because I decided I'd rather Skype with one of my friends than workout in the cold. I'm a wimp when it's this chilly and have a hard time getting my muscles warm enough to not hurt myself.

Well, I've got cookies to bake, a workout I can't skip today, and we have an elf visiting right now that's watching to make sure we're all good so I better get on those. ;)

Happy reading! -- Rhi

Sizzle and Burn Madewood Style (4 stars)

Oh those Madewoods... if you've read RECIPE FOR SATISFACTION then you know exactly what I mean. It's as if one day Gina just decided to put the hottest qualities into a quartet of heroes and instead of it being ridiculous, it's glorious. Wealthy. Check. Handsome. Check. Tattooed... triple check. Can cook... oh yeah, check. Pepper in some sad childhood issues, a dash of charitable responsibility, then add a pinch of minor celebrity and these guys are a category romance reader's wet dream. If you thought Jack was hot, wait until you open RECIPE FOR ATTRACTION and get a taste of Neil.

Of the four adoptees Vivian Madewood took in, you'd think Neil would have been the least troubled by her death. He's the smooth, unspoken leader of the family. The one who most seems to have his stuff together. Underneath his calm façade of control he's anything but and the emotions he's trying to bury are finding ways to manifest in dangerous behavior. Illegal street racing is an easy way to trash a bike and a really bad way to die. Carson Kelly knows first hand how dangerous it is, so when she finds out her sexy boss is risking his life for an adrenaline rush she refuses to let him throw his life away.

At work they're just two professionals putting the finishing touch on a Madewood family dream but whenever his demons start to rise Carson is there to sate them with a much less life threatening distraction. But Neil isn't the only one with secrets. When their passionate affair evolves into more than just a balm for their emotional wounds and threatens to ruin her career they'll have to decide if love isn't the most dangerous distraction of all.

Okay, so here's the thing... I hated the premise. I really dislike the whole I'll-save-you-from-yourself-with-sex thing. I especially hate that Carson put herself into a situation where she was basically a willing sex slave to Neil and it made me really dislike him that he would go for it. Ugh. Just ugh! And yet, as much as I disliked it, there was a certain truthfulness to it. I could easily see real people putting themselves into that kind of circumstance. Because let's face it, sex can be about anything.

Then there's the sex. OMFG the seeeex. Not a lot of authors can make me blush the way I did reading RFA. I will never be able to go into a walk-in fridge again without thinking of this book. Heck, I may never be able to eat in a restaurant again after RFA. Neil and Carson almost set my ereader ablaze. Naughty, naughty!

Once I got past hating on the trope and kinda wanting to beat the crap out of Neil (I think I saw too much of myself in him to not wanna give him a what-for) this was a good read. I'm still not sold on Cole but after seeing more of he and Finn I am so antsy for Finn's story, RECIPE FOR SEDUCTION. If you love a smoldering read that's high tension and has just the right amount of tropey fluff be sure and make sure this series hits your shelves pronto. If you need more Madewood love be sure and find Gina on Pinterest where she has inspiration boards for each book that are sure to inspire you to read them.

Review: As Hard As It Gets by Laura Kaye

Hard As It Gets (Hard Ink #1) by Laura Kaye
Contemporary Romance, Military

Tall, dark, and lethal...

He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.
With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.
Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge...

Author Site: website

A great series starter! (4 stars)

I'm quite certain I'll be the only reviewer who had a hard time reading this one that still liked it. This is one of those stories that somehow feels like everything but the kitchen sink has been tossed in and it's kind of cringe-inducing. But also fun.

Becca reminds me a lot of previous Kaye heroines I've read and in a good way. She's strong in some areas and needs help in others. If you loved Megan in NORTH OF NEED, you'll like Becca. In contrast, Nick's a little bit enigmatic, and holds back, with good reason. If you like a hero that's a little brooding without being a big downer he's a great one. I really liked that he had an artistic side and a warrior side, big kudos to Kaye for creating a well rounded hero.

Truth be told, it wasn't the romance that I really enjoyed in this one and if you're more interested in that aspect of the story you might find this a slow read. I tend to lean more toward the adventure aspects and Nick bringing his team back together to do a rescue mission was exciting. Strangely enough my favorite character wound up being Nick's younger brother whom I think I won't be alone in book boyfriending. There's a series arc that starts here that reminds me of the much beloved Black Dagger Brotherhood series so if you like a broad storyline to carry you from romance to romance make sure you check this out.

While it certainly had some slow points and the action was not as big of a part of the story as I'd have liked, there's plenty of snort-out-loud humor and a lot of between-the-sheets (and in front of a mirror and so on...) action to keep ya busy. This is definitely a read for fans of military romances and 'brotherhood' series. I'm definitely recommending a pre-order for the next Hard Ink novel.

The Awakening: Britton by Abby Niles
The Awakening #3

"I would lick that man up one side and down the other."

Half-shifter and lead SPAC agent, Val Calhoun, has listened to women gush over the Don Juan of the precinct for the last four years. Yeah, Detective Britton Townsend is hot and has stunning blue eyes, but that foul mouth he saves only for her? What a waste of good looks. And no way does Val want that mouth anywhere near hers.

When the shifter community is threatened, Val is assigned to the case…and fails. So the High Council turns to the rogue shifter they'd sentenced to twenty years as a human--that same obnoxiously sexy Detective Townsend. And sends the two arch-enemies deep into the North Carolina Mountains-—together, and alone.

Being stuck in a tiny honeymoon cabin with Miss Castration and only one bed is definitely not Britton's idea of a good time. But the High Council doesn’t take no for an answer. After his shifter abilities are restored, Brit is once again susceptible to the dreaded, irreversible bonding instinct, the Drall. Thankfully, all he’s ever felt for Val is intense loathing, no reason to worry. Right? All he has to do is solve this case pronto, and he can go back to his footloose Casanova ways. That is, if they don’t kill each other first. Or worse...fall in love.

Missed the first book in the Awakening series? While these books stand alone, it can be fun to go back and see how the other couple got together. And in celebration of book #3's release, book one, The Awakening: Aidan is on sale for just 99¢ as well, so grab it while you can!

The Awakening: Aidan by Abby Niles
The Awakening #1

Is the gift of eternal love a blessing or a curse? After years of counseling grieving shifters, psychiatrist and half-shifter, Dr. Jaylin Avgar has become jaded on shifter mating. She wants to marry a human and forget about the love for eternity crap. Then she meets Aidan O’Connell, an infuriatingly laid back shifter who represents everything she doesn’t want. Yet, the more he pursues her, the more she craves a future with him. Only one thing stands in her way: death. Can she overcome her fear of losing Aidan to the one guarantee in life? Millionaire consultant, Aidan O’Connell knows he’ll one day meet a woman who’ll awaken an unrelenting mating instinct. Unfortunately, that woman is Jaylin, who has no qualms about telling him that he and his so-called eternity can shove it. When she pushes him away, he takes a drastic step so she can no longer escape. The close proximity throws the instinct into overdrive. Can he control the need engrained in him until he’s certain she will reciprocate the bond, or will a moment of weakness doom him to hell on earth?

Blog Tour: SIX by Rachel Robinson [Excerpt & Giveaway]

SIX
Sundancer #1
Rachel Robinson

Emmalina is an immortal darkling. A half human, half dark witch. Though she was born with all six emotions, she has arrived at her eighteenth birthday and all but one miserable emotion has fled her body.
The mission of the dark witches who control the new, darker world is simple—eradicate weakness. Weakness is summed up in one word. Emotion. Or, the six. Anger, fear, sadness, joy, surprise, and love.
The dark witches want her. She wants something else more.
She wants six.

Excerpt:
He just made a promise to protect me and he is already passing me off to another circle.
He notices the scowl on my face. “Don’t get angry. You’ll be protected,” he says smiling. “I’ll send Lana with you and Bec, too if you want, but I need to get away for a bit.” His jaw works at the mention of getting away.
“I feel safer with you.” I walk to stand in front of him. I like it when we are close. I can see his eyes better. I notice new things every time I study him. His dark eyebrows slant inward, his pink lips are never completely closed, the way his straight nose is angled perfectly between his eyes and mouth. I have no comparison, but I think Finn is probably a flawless specimen of a male darkling.
“Don’t look at me like that…or say things like that. It just makes our…arrangement even more difficult.” I know it has to do with the decree but I do not understand something.
“You cannot have sex, but can you not love?”

Review: Less Than Perfect by Kelly Jensen

Less Than Perfect by Kelly Jensen
Post-Apocalyptic, Romance, Aliens
Ebook $1.99 (120 pages, EVER AFTER)
Mikayla’s read every book in her collection of post-apocalyptic novels at least twice. She thinks she's prepared for aliens taking over Earth. She's not.
Nor is she prepared for the attention of a good-looking refugee named Reg.
All Mikayla and Reg want is a safe place to see out the end of the world, hidden away from the aliens that call themselves The People, but cities of the depopulated United States not infested with The People are rife with gangs, the detritus of civilization and disease.
On a mission to restock their supplies, Mikayla and Reg are captured by The People and prepared for the procedure that will make them perfect, but no longer quite human. In order to escape, they need to rely on each other...if Mikayla can trust a man who seems too good to be true.

Flawed to the bones... (2 stars)

Aliens have taken over Earth. The human race must undergo a procedure to physically perfect them to join with The People, as they call themselves. But there are those who have fled and those who have resisted dwelling out in hiding places, sometimes fighting amongst one another for food and shelter. Mikayla has a good thing going with the tiny group she's part of until they're ousted by another group. She's a bookworm with a taste for post-apocalyptic fiction that really hasn't helped her out much now that the world really is ending. Then there's her crush on Reg.

When the pair get captured by The People while trying to gather supplies it's a race against time to find their companions, escape the procedure that would take away the flaws that make them human, and a chance to discover how they really feel about each other.

I am such a sucker for romance in PA stories that I couldn't resist reading LESS THAN PERFECT. Somehow though, it managed to just not quite wow me. I just never really felt any real danger from The People. There's was a lot of telling but never any showing. Without spoiling it for anyone let me just say that if you go in expecting to find out anything about them and why they took over Earth or why they're trying to make the humans into their kind... well, you're just not going to find any answers. Because of that, I never quite connected with Reg or Mikayla.

Reg is two-dimensional and while not an unlikable hero, he's just boring. Mikayla is overly fleshed out, obsessing over her books and the physical flaws that make her human. By the last few chapters I was aching for the story to end so she'd stop with the obsessing. I get it, you want to keep your freckles and glasses, but if I have to hear about them one more friggin' time...

Without anything to really gush about I had to shell out a two star review but I think readers who have personalities like Mikayla's will love it. When the narrative has me aching for the next page to be the last for more than a third of the book it's just not one I can recommend.

Olivia
He tilts my chin up so my eyes meet his, his thumb brushing lightly across my lips. I close my eyes. I know Z is trouble. I know that being with him is going to get me into trouble. I don’t care.
At least at this moment, I don’t care.

Tossed from foster home to foster home, Olivia’s seen a lot in her sixteen years. She’s hardened, sure, though mostly just wants to fly under the radar until graduation. But her natural ability with computers catches the eye of Z, a mysterious guy at her new school. Soon, Z has brought Liv into his team of hacker elite—break into a few bank accounts, and voila, he drives a motorcycle. Follow his lead, and Olivia might even be able to escape from her oppressive foster parents. As Olivia and Z grow closer, though, so does the watchful eye of Bill Sykes, Z’s boss. And he’s got bigger plans for Liv…

Z
I can picture Liv’s face: wide-eyed, trusting. Her smooth lips that taste like strawberry Fanta.
It was just a kiss. That’s all. She’s just like any other girl.
Except that she’s not.
Thanks to Z, Olivia’s about to get twisted.
