W.R. [08/31-09/03] :: Win a NOOK, loooong weekend, & a giggle!

Three days into the school year and my toddler is sick. *facepalm* Her big brother has always brought 'crud' home from school to infect me with and it looks like she's finally losing her previous immunity to it. Which means this is going to be a long weekend, and not in the fun way. Anyone doing a little last hoorah camping or boating or waterpark visit?

With the hubs stuck working the ENTIRE weekend, my stepkid over for the weekend, and the tot sick I'm not sure I'm going to get much reading in. Which reeeeally bums me out 'cause I just started Wife for Hire by Christine Bell last night. Any other fans of Christine 'round here? Great news if you haven't heard: she's got 2 more Indulgence titles following WIFE FOR HIRE, and 3 upcoming Brazen titles! Yay!

Also on my list of Entangled imprints worth watching is their new line called Bliss, which I introduced to you earlier this week. The Entangled in Romance blog is hosting a NOOK giveaway to celebrate!

I took part in the giveaways for a couple of the other imprints and the entries are soooo easy. If you'd love to have your very own NOOK you can head over there or enter right here at RhiReading via the widget I'll tack onto the bottom of this post.

In the meantime you can quickly check their three launch titles out:

LUCKY BREAK by KELLEY VITOLLO

She’ll gamble her heart on the best friend she left behind…

One lucky break is all struggling actress Sidney Williams needs. But when living the LA life becomes too much, she heads back to the small town of Shamrock Falls for the vacation she needs to get her life on track—and immediately runs into Kade Mitchell, her former best friend and the boy next door she’s always regretted leaving behind.

Kade, the new owner of Lucky’s—once the most popular bar in Shamrock Falls—is determined to bring the place back to its former glory, and seeing Sidney again is a distraction he doesn’t need. Sure, the chemistry between them is explosive, but Kade can’t let himself fall into a fling with his best friend—not when he knows she’s soon heading back to the glitter of Tinseltown.
Now, with the possibility of her first major acting role looming, Sidney must decide if her lucky break is in Hollywood or right where she left it—in Shamrock Falls.

THREE RIVER RANCH by ROXANNE SNOPEK

To save his ranch, he needs a wife. But can she save his heart?

Needing a fresh start from her two-timing fiancĂ©, Aurora McAllister answers a realtor’s ad for a guesthouse on the beautiful, serene Three River Ranch. She shows up at Three River tired, alone, and—oh, yeah—pregnant.

Cowboy Carson Granger has enough trouble in his life without adding a pregnant woman to the mix. There’s the untamed mustang he’s prepping to release into the wild, not to mention his father’s crazy will, which stipulates that if he wants to fully inherit Three River, he’ll need to find a bride. Carson wants nothing to do with love or marriage. And children? They’ve never been in the cards. But he soon realizes Rory, and everything she represents, might just be exactly what he needs.

Sometimes love arrives on your doorstep when you least expect it…

SUGAR RUSH by RACHEL ASTOR

There’s nothing quite like your first bite.

Dulcie Carter has been running her family’s homemade sweet shop, Candy Land Confections, on her own since her mom passed away. But business is slow and rent is high, so Dulcie knows if she wants to keep her mom’s dream alive, she’ll need a miracle. Winning the annual Assembly of Chocolatiers competition will change everything, if only she can overcome her fears and bring herself to create something new for the first time in a long time.

Then she meets Nick, a molten-hot guy with a sexy smirk and chocolate brown eyes. The attraction is stronger than any sugar rush—until she discovers he’s set to inherit his family’s big-box candy shop in town, which is her strongest competitor for first prize. Nick’s got his own reasons for needing the win, but then being around Dulcie is proving addictive.

As the competition heats up, so do the sparks between them. Can they keep their sights on winning, when love might be the sweetest prize of all?

They all sound fun don't they? I'm thinking I'll be picking up SUGAR RUSH first. I'm a bit of a secret food nerd so it's the one that caught my eye first.

Anywho, time to wipe the little one's nose and ask her why I just looked over and she's naked... again. Obviously the medicine has kicked in and she's feeling a bit better. lol Ahhh the trials of book blogger moms... so many books and so few moments to read them in that aren't hindered by snotty noses, diaper changes, and teenaged tantrums. Have a great long weekend if you're here in the states! ♥ -- Rhi

Review: Tall, Dark, and Divine by Jenna Bennett

Tall, Dark, and Divine by Jenna Bennett
Paranormal Romance, Category Romance, Mythology
Ebook $2.99 (### pages, COVET)
Being the Greek god of love doesn’t mean you believe--or want--anything to do with that sappy emotion. Sure, Eros runs his matchmaking business, Made in Heaven, but finding his own love has never been part of the equation. When he spots the sweet baker who works across the street, he vows to match her with someone else before she stirs his sullen heart.
Annie Landon has given up on finding Mr. Right. What she needs is Mr. Right Here, Right Now, and this so-called “Greek God” she’s heard is on the rebound sounds like the perfect kind of distraction. But picking up the bitter workaholic is easier said than done…especially when he seems unreasonably determined to match her with someone else.
Can a woman looking for love—and the matchmaking god who wants her to find it with someone who isn’t him—have a shot at a happy ending? May the best god—or mortal—win.

Author Site: jennabennett.com

Giggles, Greek Gods, and Golden Arrows (4 stars)

You'd think the Greek god of love would be really lucky at finding one of his own. Unfortunately, Eros has had really bad luck in his romantic life which is making him really unpleasant company for his fellow dieities. When Annie Landon, the baker at the dog bakery across from his matchmaking business' office, crosses his path he makes it his mission to help her land the guy she's interested in. But what if the guy she thought she wanted isn't who she thought he was and the matchmaker trying to help her make a match is the very thing she's needed all along?

Chick lit fans fasten your safetybelts. This one has plenty of elements you're sure to love from the businessy people and hot spot bar they all seem to hang out at, to the giggle inducing moments that lighten the romance it's a fluffy kind of read. Eros is charming—what else do you expect from a Greek god?—and his fellow gods dieties make an interesting group of secondary characters perfect for sequelization. Annie is okay, I personally had a hard time finding her relatable and that always makes it harder for me to fall in love with a book.

Lots of misunderstanding and some naughty scenes that'll have your hair standing on end keep it tightly paced as Annie and Eros find their way to a happily-ever-after. TALL, DARK, AND DIVINE is just the sort of chuckle inducing, quickie romance that readers could savor at the end of a rotten day at work. If you love Tina Folsom's Out of Olympus series you're sure to enjoy it!

Get BLISSed out with a new imprint of sweet & sassy shorts!

Yes, I'm drinking the Kool-Aid that Entangled Publishing seems to be carefully putting in front of me. Maybe it's because they've had such a great blogger outreach in marketing (which doesn't hurt) but in my case it's honestly a matter of quality and availability meeting in a really harmonious union.

Recently they've introduced several category romance imprints that I've shared with you and this week another makes its debut. BLISS is the line for the reader who wants their romance without full-disclosure love scenes. If you've read my blog for a long time you know I tend to prefer 'closed door' love scenes in romances with the occasional exception and I'm really happy that Entangled saw the market for romances without all of the anatomical description. lol (I can only take so many references to gender organs like 'folds', 'member', and 'pearl' before I start making really weird faces and skip ahead... I can't be the only one!)

Want to check out the launch titles? With a pregnant heroine and rancher hero, dueling chocolatiers, and a big-city-dreams versus small-town-love between the three how do you know where to start? Priced at just $2.99 and in the 150-170 page range you can't go wrong grabbing all three. ;)

Be sure and drop by the Entangled in Romance blog and 'Like' the BLISS Facebook page to find out the latest news about upcoming titles and find out how to win prizes from the three authors launching the imprint. If you pick any of these up and read them let me know which! I'm too swamped with other review reading (and school starts tomorrow!) to get to them right now and I can't decide which one I want to read first if I ever get the time. lol -- Rhi

She also spent a few years living in Cuba. Since her time on the island of one McDonald's and Banana Rats (don't ask) she has been obsessed with traveling. Tiffany recently added China to her list of travels (hello inspiration for a new book).

Besides traveling, Tiffany has always been an avid reader. The earliest books she remembers reading belong to The Little House on the Prairie Series. First book she read in one day? Interview: Author Misa Ramirez [Deceiving the Witch Next Door Blog Tour]

Dear readers I have been sooo excited to finally both read and review a title from Misa and to get to interview her. She's such an impressive and inspiring person if you've noticed her around the social sphere of the 'net, but especially in Entangled related matters. This interview is definitely one of my favorites and if you read my review of DECEIVING THE WITCH NEXT DOOR on Wednesday you'll know why I consider it one of my favorites. Now read on... 'cause we sure had fun! -- Rhi

Hi Misa! Welcome to RhiReading, where today we’re celebrating the release of your latest release, Deceiving the Witch Next Door.

While I first became acquainted with you as Entangled Publishing’s Marketing Director, you have quite an impressive resume as both an editor and an author. You’ve written Cozy Mysteries and Romantic Suspense but this is your first Paranormal. With so many terrific elements one could write about in a Paranormal, what made you choose a Witch?

Thank you for having me here today! My Magical Dressmaking Mystery series has light paranormal elements and I love magical realism. I wish the world was like a Sarah Addison Allen book! Wouldn’t that be fun?!

(Rhi's note: Heck yes! Readers you can search 'Sarah Addison Allen' here on the blog to know just what we're talking about).

When I started Storie Bell’s story, I saw her a witch in a small Texas town, but one whose skills were rather rudimentary because she grew up in the mortal world, not the magical world. The little bits of magic she does are fun and add just enough paranormal to make it an enchanting world. And I love enchanting ☺

DtWND’s heroine, Storie Bell, has a reputation for being Bloomington, Texas’ resident nutcase. With a busy career that reads with plenty of slashes—writer/editor/marketing-director—and five kids I’m betting you know a thing or two about crazy. As a witch Storie must have a few tricks up her sleeve for blowing off steam you can share with my readers...?

LOL Yes, I know crazy! Storie’s powers are fairly rooted in the natural world. Using her magic drains her (for reasons I can’t explain here). Still, she manages to use her powers. She goes to the lake (where she first encountered Reid Malone, the hero of the story) and harnesses the power of a brewing Texas summer storm. Clouds rolling in, thunder, lightning, and rain help ground her.

What readers might not know until they read DtWND’s dedication is that Storie and the Storiebook Cafe were (at least in part) inspired by a real person and cafe in Glen Rose, Texas. But we’d all love to know where the inspiration for Reid Malone sprouted from...

I live in Texas, so have a little affinity for the sexy cowboy, but I like my men to have solid footing in the business world and city life, too. I like ‘em well rounded! Reid is all of that, and more. He’s cowboy rugged, but he’s itching to leave Bloomington and get back to Austin and city life. He’s the perfect combination. And all from my imagination!

The blurb for DtWND is rottenly teasing regarding a big secret Reid’s guarding. Do you have any special secrets you could share with the readers who might be interested in writing their own Covet title someday?

Review: Deceiving the Witch Next Door by Melissa Bourbon Ramirez

Deceiving the Witch Next Door by Melissa Bourbon Ramirez
Paranormal Romance, Category Romance, Witches
Ebook $2.99 (149 pages, COVET)
Storie Bell has a little secret—she’s a witch. But magic hasn’t exactly kept her life from being a complete mess—her love life is non-existent and the town thinks she’s a total nutter. Plus there’s her neighbor Reid Malone who runs hot one minute and cold the next. Reid Malone can’t wait to escape Bloomington, Texas. Unfortunately, he’s stuck where he is unless he helps his father hide a very illegal secret. The only key to Reid’s freedom lies with the eccentric Storie…and he’ll do whatever it takes to get the information he needs from her. But Reid’s holding something back. Something big. And if he’s not careful, he’ll find out exactly what happens when you try to deceive a witch…
Author Site: misaramirez.com

An Instant Category Romance Classic (5 stars)

Reid Malone wants nothing more than to get out of Bloomington, Texas and never look back. But he's a good son, trying to right by his aging father—even if that means hiding his dad's highly illegal secret. If he could just get the last piece of the puzzle holding him in Bloomington he could light out for the big city without a care in the world. The trouble is, the one girl he's dreamed about since their almost-encounter years ago—the eccentric flame-maned Storie Bell—is getting in the way of his finding it.

When she left Bloomington, Storie didn't expect to come back but building a bookshop/cafe with her best friend in the old service station her father left her is good enough for her. Until Reid pops back up in her world and the magic she's always struggled with working starts becoming more troublesome. She doesn't trust Reid but she can't seem to cool off the electric connection that started before she left. Are his seemingly equal lusty leanings genuine or is Reid hiding something sinister? Storie's going to figure it out even if she has to get witchy to do so.

Insert a bit of googly-eyed fangirling here because I freaking LOVED this book. It isn't every day I read a first chapter and have a moment of 'whoa buddy' excitement I want to tell everyone about. Ramirez definitely knows how to lure a reader in and fortunately she keeps the excitement going. This is one sexy story and yet it's quite heartfelt too. Storie is a character that anyone who's ever felt like the oddball can relate to and she pulls herself up by the bootstraps pretty well which makes her a strong heroine I think most PNR fans will love. Reid is tongue-on-the-floor smooth in all the right ways without it being unbelievable. I was rooting for these two from the get-go.

Meanwhile, there are giggle worthy moments and secondary characters that pepper DECEIVING THE WITCH NEXT DOOR with realism that manages to ground it. While the paranormal is definitely on the light side it's a key element in the storytelling and I wanted so much more of it, that I hope Ramirez writes another in this world. I sensed mild potential for secondary characters to have their own books but haven't seen anything to indicate that for sure.

Overall, this one has everything I expect from a category romance and a just-right paranormal thread to make it fun but not overwhelm readers with a lot of world building. This is one I would definitely reread if I ever stopped finding more books I want to read long enough to do it. A definite recommend for readers who need a shorter read for a place ride or sick day that's sure to stimulate on many levels.

Review: Lucid by P.T. Michelle

Lucid (Brightest Kind of Darkness #2) by P.T. Michelle
Young Adult, Supernatural, Romance
Ebook $4.99 (274 pages, SELF PUBLISHED) Once Nara combines her prophetic ability with Ethan's power to outsmart Fate at his own deadly cat-and-mouse game, she's more determined than ever to help Ethan learn the meaning behind the raven sword tattoo that suddenly appeared on his back after their confrontation with Fate. During her quest to uncover the tattoo's secrets, Nara enlists the help of some new friends and discovers her own surprising connection to Ethan. While Nara digs deeper into the mystery, her desire for answers leads her down a dangerous path full of powerful and ruthless enemies. Swept into an age-old battle, Nara quickly learns that keeping one's enemies close can be a necessary evil, making an intangible enemy she can control far more preferable to the human enemies she can't.
Author Site: ptmichelle.com

Great Sequel, But Less Ethan(5 stars)

Though I usually love to give my own blurby recount of the plot of books I review I think the official one does such a good job I can spare you the time and just jump right in. LUCID is definitely different from BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS. For me, as a reader and fan, it worked really well. I loved that with Ethan gone trying to reconnect with his parents Nara didn't spend all of her time moping over his absense. Instead she gets to work trying to find out more about his mysterious sword tattoo. Readers who are more inclined to focusing on the romance element of the story might find Ethan's long absense frustrating but I truly felt it enriched them both as characters and gave us a chance to see how Nara could handle things without him. That said, be prepared if you loved their romantic interludes best, LUCID focuses much more on their supernatural secrets.

Nara gets herself into some trouble through this story that is sure to have you staying up late into the night to finish it. It was just as difficult to put down as the first. Michelle is a truly gifted storyteller and looking at the estimated page count for it I honestly thought it was at least another 150 pages longer because so much happens!
New students at school make for new friends and those who dislike love triangles might panic with Drystan coming on the scene. I actually really liked him and look forward to seeing what involvement he will have in the next in the series. For the sake of not going spoilery on you I'll just say that he's no real competition for Ethan but makes for a great companion when Nara needs someone there.

I tend to pick up coming plot twists really easily and did pretty well with LUCID but it still had a lot of surprises for even me. If you enjoyed BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS I think you'll love how action packed LUCID is. There's a lot of mystery and new developments of the supernatural kind that will whet your appetite for the third book to devour. While not as romance-centric this time around I think those who love the relationship between Nara and Ethan will find the building up of them as individuals that happens here—though Ethan's primarily happens 'off screen'—to ultimately be enriching to their couplehood.

Cover Reveal: Conjure by Lea Nolan

About CONJURE:
Be careful what you search for…

Emma Guthrie expects this summer to be like any other in the South Carolina Lowcountry--hot and steamy with plenty of beach time alongside her best friend and secret crush, Cooper Beaumont, and Emma’s ever-present twin brother, Jack. But then a mysterious eighteenth-century message in a bottle surfaces, revealing a hidden pirate bounty. Lured by the adventure, the trio discovers the treasure and unwittingly unleashes an ancient Gullah curse that attacks Jack with the wicked flesh-eating Creep and promises to steal Cooper’s soul on his approaching sixteenth birthday.

When a strange girl appears, bent on revenge; demon dogs become a threat; and Jack turns into a walking skeleton; Emma has no choice but to learn hoodoo magic to undo the hex, all before summer—and her friends--are lost forever.

Sounds so good doesn't it? I kind of had a pirate obsession when I was little (I blame The Goonies) so this is right up my alley in so many ways it ain't funny. Well, since we can't get our hands on it until next month why not get to know more about the author and enter to win a digital ARC? You can also pre-order print copies on Amazon...

Review: Seducing Cinderella by Gina L. Maxwell

Seducing Cinderella by Gina L. Maxwell
Contemporary Romance, Category Romance, Erotic
Ebook $2.99 (155 pages, BRAZEN)
Mixed martial arts fighter Reid Andrews’s chance to reclaim his title as light heavyweight champ is shattered when he’s injured only months before the rematch. To make sure he’s healed in time, his trainer sends him to recuperate under a professional’s care—Reid’s best friend’s little sister, all grown up. Disorganized and bookish Lucie Miller needs some professional help of her own. She’d do anything to catch the eye of a doctor she’s crushed on for years, so when Reid offers seduction lessons in exchange for 24/7 conditioning for the biggest fight of his career, Lucie jumps at the chance. Soon Reid finds himself in the fight of his life...winning Lucie's heart before she gives it to someone else.
Author Site: ginalmaxwell.com

Pure Smutty Goodness (5 stars)

Lucie Miller learned the hard way not to get involved with a man she has nothing in common with. After putting her bad marriage behind her she's decided to look for a man she's compatible with, a guy like the doctor she works and shares a great professional relationship with. But he can't seem to see her as anything other than a great physical therapist. When Reid Andrews, an old friend and MMA champ, comes to her to get back on his feet after a shoulder injury he offers to teach her the art of seduction.

Getting Reid ready for his rematch is easy, but resisting the growing attraction their seduction lessons is brewing isn't. Lucie has a plan and it doesn't involve falling hard for her brother's best friend, a man she knows could never share the same feelings for her. Caving to their cravings doesn't mean anything, it's just a way to get it out of their systems... or will it completely change the sport of seduction.

Blah, I'm still drooling over this one and it's been a couple of days since I finished it. While there were a few small spots where I kind of felt like it was obvious this was Maxwell's debut it really blew me away. She's a masterful storyteller and I pretty much had her on my must-read list before I was halfway through SEDUCING CINDERELLA. Lucie wasn't totally likable, her thinking Reid couldn't actually like her did strike me as a little contrived considering all his actions spoke to the contrary. Yet, I couldn't dislike her at all, mostly just got frustrated that she didn't see what I was seeing as the reader. Reid was surprisingly multi-dimensional in a genre I have come to expect bland heroes from. I loved, loved, LOVED, that he was a fighter with an artistic side. It's a combo I never thought could work and yet felt true. His confidence and take-no-prisoners personality will make Alpha-male fans' hearts flutter while his attentive, sensual side as a lover will be a sure-fire panty melter for all romance lovers. He's the sort that can take the reigns without being a brute about it.

The story is actually pretty meaty in scope with Reid healing and training for his big rematch and Lucie trying to put her lessons to use on her doctor, but a lot of these details happen 'off screen'. What you will get is a seriously smoldering series of scenes focusing on the seduction lessons, building of sexual tension, and finally plenty of cheek-burning, jaw-dropping love scenes. I'm not usually one to go for fiction with this much 'action' but so far the Brazen imprint of Entangled Publishing is proving to be a rich blend of erotic and romantic elements that I'm loving. If you love a smoking hot romance SEDUCING CINDERELLA is definitely one to consider.

Not only was SEDUCING CINDERELLA a great blend of sensual romance and really fab characters, it sets the bar for the imprint. I will definitely be reading more from Gina L. Maxwell and have a new found interest in MMA heroes, when I've never even had an interest in the sport before. Sure to appeal to readers who like athletes and warrior types!

Review: Take It Like A Vamp by Candace Havens

Take It Like A Vamp by Candace Havens
Paranormal Romance, Category Romance, Vampires
Ebook $2.99 (174 pages, COVET)
Vampire Nick Christos might have been born in the Middle Ages, but those days seem tame compared to the last eight years spent ruling the Supernatural Council. The only respite in his long days of governing is with his sweet neighbor Casey Meyers. Sure, he's forced to take a cold shower after every encounter, but no way will he risk anything more with a human. Not with his blood thirsty ex on the prowl and out to ruin Nick’s life. But when said crazy ex shows up at the ball and flies her freak flag high, Nick has more to worry about than keeping his hands off his neighbor. He'll have to stay closer than ever if he hopes to keep her alive, but will she want to leave him forever when she learns the truth?
Author Site: candacehavens.com

PNR for the non-PNR fan... (4 stars)

Ruling the Supernatural Council is a tough job. Not only does Nick Christos have to keep the peace between lots of different supernatural races, but they expect him to have a wife now too. His neighbor Casey Meyers would make a wonderful partner in eternity but for the one thing that keeps them apart: she's human.

Casey would love to be something more than just best friends with Nick but she knows she's not the model material he dates. But when he calls on her to be his date for a special event and gives her the Cinderella treatment she finds there's a lot more going on with her mysterious billionaire buddy. He's got some pretty unexpected baggage and might be involved with the mob or something equally sinister. Even as she's falling for him and he struggles with his own desires the things left unsaid keep piling up until the dishonesty wedged between them might ruin even the friendship they once shared.

Chick-litty cuteness and humor mark this enjoyable vampire-protecting-precious-human story as something light and fluffy. I liked Casey right away. She was comfortable with herself in a way I found appealing and not unreal. Nick was alright, but hard to pin down if I'm honest. Definitely not my favorite hero but not the worst either... until he did something that I, personally, consider a major no-no in my romance heroes. For the sake of not spoiling it I won't say more but if you don't like heroes who make decisions for the heroine without their knowledge please be advised this one might push your annoyance button too.

In spite of Nick ruining himself for me and thus souring me on the romance, the story wasn't a total bust. The secondary characters definitely saved this one from a lower rating from me. There's a little dash of mystery and I know I'm not alone in finding Nick's best friend, Linc, to be a character worth clamoring to see more of. The one thing I was most disappointed in was the lack of any actual paranormal stuff going on. Half the book goes by before we find out why Nick can be outside in the sun. Truthfully, if you changed Nick into a Mobster or Rock Star or whatever and swapped the few paranormal mentions out it could easily not be a paranormal romance at all. That said, it's not a bad story, just not as thick on the PNR as I prefer.

If you're in the mood for a short chick-lit-ish romp featuring very light paranormal elements and plenty of giggle-worthy moments I think it's just the right kind of read for a quiet evening in with some ice cream. It'd probably be a good choice for contemporary lovers who don't usually like paranormals but want to dabble a little. I'll definitely be looking for more from Havens in the future... just no more Nick. He's been a bad boy and not in the way that I like.

She might have accidentally seduced the wrong Schultz brother but she's in for another surprise as he attempts to make the sexual chemistry the two shared into something more. If only he'd take the hint from her snobbish rebuffs and leave her to recover from her mortification.

Right off the bat I hated Elle. She acted like Gabe wasn't good enough for her and that kind of girl just sets my teeth on edge. But I was really interested to see where the story went and kept reading only to realize as it was almost at an end that somewhere along the journey she had completely lost that without me noticing. Kudos to Robert for pulling off such a subtle and organic change I could believe in it. Gabe may end up being one of my favorite romance heroes ever. I feel really stupid even writing this but he's a lot like the man I'm happily married to and actually a lot like me at the same time so I found him both relatable and attractive. Once Elle's snobbery faded there was a part of her that was actually very relatable too. If you relate to a heroine with an overbearing, this-is-the-way-it-is type of family with big expectations you'll grow to empathize with her.

While there were some elements of the story I found a little random and over-the-top you have to remember this is a category romance title which means those kind of things are to be expected. Gabe owning a bunch of night clubs and running a tattoo shop felt a little bit much when his past is considered though it gets explained away quickly at some point. I couldn't help but be pleased though, that Robert chose to set the story in Spokane (one of the reasons I related to Gabe) versus a stereotypical choice like Seattle.

What you really want to know though is just how Brazen this one gets right? lol As a reader I kind of prefer closed-door love scenes but when I want to read them in detail they better be really darned good. WRONG BED, RIGHT GUY blew (no pun intended) me away with how good they were. If you want some lip-biting, eye-popping, clutching-your-blanket, left-needing-a-cold-shower love scenes this is your book. I will never look at a storage closet the same way again. Just sayin'. That's just my favorite of the bunch... how Robert managed to pack several in without it feeling gratuitious I don't know but I'll be reading anything she puts out in the Brazen imprint after this.

If you need a rainy day read, or maybe one for an afternoon poolside I can't recommend WRONG BED, RIGHT GUY enough for sheer overall enjoyability. If you love bad boy heroes with heart, heroines who need a little saving from themselves, and a steamy smut overload in a story short enough to read in an afternoon you'll love it!

W.R. [08/10-08/12] :: Ambitions, Donations, & Legalities

As you guys know, I tend to lean toward the American Red Cross as far as nudging charitable aid here on the blog. What you might not know is why. The ARC is often known more for its blood services than other areas. Did you know that when a soldier is deployed and there is a family emergency they are often reached through the ARC? That's how my husband learned about the birth of our first child. They provide aid to disaster victims around the world, first aid and CPR training to their communities, and of course, blood services. While patients never know where their transfused blood comes from you'd probably be amazed to learn just how much work goes into making sure there are transfusible 'products' when people need them. I know a bit about it because my husband is just one of the many people who work to make sure that when blood is needed it's ready to be used.

When you have an intimate knowledge of how precious blood is (transfusions have saved lives within my family) and the importance of the services the ARC provides it's hard not to want to help out in any way you possibly can. It's recently been in the news that blood donations are critically low. At the same time the hubs and I were discussing ways the ARC could reach out and appeal to a new generation.

Being me I suggested they find a way to play on the pop culture popularity of vampires. The trouble is we really don't know where to start and how to approach—not to mention sort out the legalities of—the desired entities. As a reviewer and blogger I think I'm pretty good at marketing books (and products)... it's the whole putting it together (and of course, making sure all the legal I's are dotted and T's crossed) part that's got me overwhelmed. Which is why I'm focusing there rather than say, trying to track down how I could legally get the True Blood cast involved or something of that nature.

So in the interest of querying my fanbase and friends (as potential contributors from either side) for feedback I'm curious what you'd think of the following scenarios...

  • Would you purchase an ebook anthology featuring vampire stories in the price range of $3-$5 if all or a significant percentage of the proceeds went to the American Red Cross? Would you as an author, editor, or artist be willing to donate your work/time to such a project?

  •  If it gave you extra entries to a big giveaway such as a Kindle Fire, vampire book themed giftbasket, multi-prize super-swag pack would you be willing to contribute to the ARC through blood donation, monetary donation, or volunteering? Authors and Bloggers, would you be willing to donate goodies for a giveaway like this?

  • Authors and Bloggers, would you be willing to take part in a weekend blog hop or social media blitz with a vampire focus that encouraged your readers' awareness of the need for blood donation?

I would greatly appreciate ALL feedback I can possibly get because I'd like to present these potential scenarios and volunteer my time in facilitating or coordinating them to the marketing department of the ARC. There's just only so much I can do as one person and this is an area I feel like I could offer something new and untried, something they wouldn't have been able to do or even think of as a marketing strategy of their own. Of course, the key to it all is that they can't pay for any of it. ALL of it has to be donated by folks like me who want to spread the word and have time/materials/etc. they can donate beyond their blood.

So this weekend I'm actually taking a break from the Paranormal and treating myself to a read that I didn't even get to review. Yeah, I'm reading a book I bought and have NO obligation to review. That I am totally going to anyway. lol What's hilarious is that once again I was all like 'mom-in-law you needs buy these books full of steamy hawtness' and she goes 'oh yeah? hmmmmm already haz them! you looz!'. Because we really do seem like lolcats when we talk books. ;) Anyone else get crazy spazzy when they get together with a fellow Bookie?
Anyways, Wrong Bed, Right Guy is seriously sexy. Like, I don't even want Gabe to get with Elle yet because I find her undeserving at the moment and he is luuuucious. You have to say it just like that. Draw it out. I honestly don't have a 'type' with guys/heroes but damn if he doesn't make me think I should. I actually forgot to lament the fact that there wasn't a paranormal element to this story. Hopefully Elle grows on me, 'cause so far I wanna punch her in the face and steal her man. :P

Now what are you guys reading this weekend? -- Rhi

Interview: Author Candace Havens & giveaway! [Take It Like A Vamp Blog Tour]

Dear readers I am so excited to have author Candace Havens here at RhiReading today! You guys know how I struggle with interviews because original, interesting questions are difficult to come by but I accepted the challenge and Candy just completely rocked them. :) I hope you'll enjoy reading it and that you'll add TAKE IT LIKE A VAMP to your to-be-read pile really soon! ♥ -- Rhi

Witches and Warlocks, Demons and Dragons... you’ve played in the paranormal pool before but not with Vampires. What made you decide it was time to write a vampire’s tale?

Candy: I never planned to write about vampires, even though I love them. My editor mentioned an idea about a friends-to-lovers stories involving a vampire. I told her I wasn’t interested, and then a few seconds later an entire book formed in my head. I couldn’t write it down fast enough. Now I can’t wait to write another vampire book.

TILAV’s hero, Nick Christos, sounds like he has a lot on his plate. When he’s not busy doing the leader thing and dodging his psycho ex he finds solace in his sweet human neighbor, Casey Meyers. When TILAV starts, how long have they known one another and what was their first meeting like?

Review: A Blood Seduction by Pamela Palmer

A Blood Seduction (Vamp City #1) by Pamela Palmer
Urban Fantasy, Vampires
Mass Market Paperback $7.99 (384 pages, AVON)
Ebook $4.99

Quinn Lennox is searching for a missing friend when she stumbles into a dark otherworld that only she can see—and finds herself at the mercy of Arturo Mazza, a dangerously handsome vampire whose wicked kiss will save her, enslave her, bewitch her, and betray her. What Arturo can't do is forget about her—any more than Quinn can control her own feelings for him. Neither one can let desire get in the way of their mission—his to save his people, hers to save herself. But there is no escape from desire in a city built for seduction, where passion flows hot and blood-red . . .

Not even a great concept could save this one... (1 star)

While I gathered that many readers' greatest issue with A BLOOD SEDUCTION was that it was marketed as a Paranormal Romance when it actually was an Urban Fantasy, I found myself having a completely different issue.

As an avid (and practically exclusive) reader of both genres I was looking forward to reading something by Palmer, whom I had read many good reviews for in the past. I decided since A BLOOD SEDUCTION was a brand new series it was a great place to start. Unfortunately, an interesting concept about an alternate version of Washington, D.C. where vampires can live in happy darkness, is about all it had going for it from the start. The protagonist, Quinn, proves to be cookie-cutter and too-stupid-to-live right away. She winds up in Vamp City and manages to be even more annoying as she gets all lusty over her captor even while she fights to escape. Arturo is an ass. We're not talking jerky anti-hero. He's just completely unlikable. His motivations are questionable and halfway through the book I gave up on trying to like either character. The only character I actually liked was Zack, Quinn's brother but he was barely noted here and there even though this is an Urban Fantasy and he could have had considerable screentime of his own.

I so rarely toss a book into the DNF (did not finish) category but I found myself losing interest within the first hundred pages and feeling tortured from there on out. At halfway I began skimming and couldn't even skim to finish. Based on what I read I do think I will give Palmer's romances a try, she can set a scene really well, but the UF genre just might not be her forte. There has to be more going on than lust and betrayal in this genre for readers to put up with all the graphic torture and violence in this book. I'm all for some gritty violence and steamy sex but it can't feel like the whole book is just an excuse to write those scenes.

Weekend Reading [07/03-07/05] :: Book Playlist Love & I Sulk

Hope y'all had a decent week. I don't even know what a decent week is anymore. :S Maybe someday. I just keep reminding myself that I'm not alone, seems like there's a lot of shitty shit happening to everyone lately. If it weren't for books there'd be nothing happy to look forward to eh?

This weekend I'm working on Take It Like A Vamp still. Too much going on the past few days so I've barely made any progress. I can't quite make up my mind about the paranormal element though. I'm almost halfway in and it's barely mentioned. If Nick's a vamp how's he walking around in daylight? I'd at least like to know enough about the paranormal world to have those kind of things clear.

One thing I do love when I read is when authors share their novel's playlist. When I write (just for fun mind you) I always listen to music to help me with tone. Candy's playlist for TILAV has some great songs on it and actually a few I've never heard!

  • American Woman, Lenny Kravitz
  • When You Were Young, The Killers
  • Glamorous, Fergie
  • We Owned the Night, Lady Antebellum
  • Rumour Has It, Adele
  • In Love With A Girl, Gavin Degraw
  • Luxurious, Gwen Stefani
  • Bad Case of Loving You, Robert Palmer
  • The Mating Game, Bitter:Sweet
  • Bad Things, Jace Everett
  • Feels Like the First Time, Foreigner
  • Black Magic Woman, Santana
  • American Honey, Lady Antebellum
  • I'd love to know what ones inspired specific scenes but I can take a guess about couple. I can easily picture "Black Magic Woman" being the villainous ex-girlfriend's anthem. How could it not be?

My weekend is bound to be pure suckatude but I hope y'all have a great one and that you'll leave me a comment telling me what you're reading! -- Rhi

Book Trailer: Take It Like A Vamp by Candace Havens

I am sooo sore today! Long day at the state fair yesterday packing around 35lbs worth of toddler who won't sit in a stroller and a 25lb diaper bag means I have noooo energy left and my shoulder is screaming for some TLC. So instead of folding laundry or doing dishes while the tot naps I'm going to relax and read some more of Take It Like A Vamp. But first I thought I ought to share the book trailer so I could pretend I worked on the blog today! :P

So far it's really good, although it's hit a point I may be too interested in the secondary character, Linc, to keep reading without him in the scenes. The Nick's been compared to a short haired Aragorn and Linc to Dyson from Lost Girl... mmm yeah gonna have to admit I'd be much more attracted to Linc. teehee! What do you think?

Review: Night of Fire by Nico Rosso

Night of Fire (The Ether Chronicles #2) by Nico Rosso
    Steampunk Romance, Western
Mass Market Paperback $3.99 (100 pages, AVON)
    Ebook $1.99

Night of fire, night of passion
US Army Upland Ranger Tom Knox always knew going home wouldn’t be easy. Three years ago, he skipped town, leaving behind the only woman who ever mattered; now that he’s seen the front lines of war, he’s ready to do what he must to win her back.
Rosa Campos is long past wasting tears on Tom Knox, and now that she’s sheriff of Thornville, she has more than enough to do. Especially when a five-story rock-eating mining machine barrels toward the town she’s sworn to protect.
Tom’s the last person Rosa expects to see riding to her aid on his ether-borne mechanical horse. She may not be ready to forgive, but Rosa can’t deny that having him at her side brings back blissful memories . . . even as it reignites a flame more dangerous than the enemy threatening to destroy them both.

All hat, no cattle... but not bad either! (3 stars)

Three years have passed since Tom Knox rode out of Thornville on a stolen horse, leaving Rosa behind. Now an Upland Ranger with the US Army he's gotten his honor back and he's ready to do everything in his power to win her back. But before he can properly woo Rosa, the pair will face off with an enemy who won't take no for an answer... a mining machine threatening to devour everything in its path including Thornville. The road back to passion will be paved with danger and the slivers of past hurts but if Tom and Rosa can save the town, surely they can find a way to forgive and rekindle the love they once shared.

While stripped down to it's formulaic elements NIGHT OF FIRE is a romance, I admit some hesitation recommending it to romance readers. When the hero and heroine are introduced they have lots of flaming physical chemistry but I found their personalities weren't fleshed out enough I felt like I knew them enough to root for a resolution to their past. Here in Montana we have a saying 'all hat, no cattle' which really fits the story overall. Rosso is a great writer, his action scenes are absolutely killer! I just found the romance lacked any of the substantial chemistry I expected due to lack of character development. Too much telling and not enough showing why they loved one another before that lead to a rekindled relationship.

Keeping in mind the romance was weak I have to flip this review and say that if you're looking for a really cool steampunk action adventure it rocked my socks. Rosa isn't a shrinking violet and the pair compliment one another well as partners in a mission to save Thornville. I'd actually very much recommend NIGHT OF FIRE to the male audience who enjoy an action-packed steampunk with a sprinkle of the other kind of steam without a bunch of gushy lovey-dovey stuff. I think it's got great cross-over appeal for romance fans looking to try steampunk and steampunk fans who dabble in romances.
