Young Adult, Supernatural, Romance
Paperback $14.99 (251 pages, ENTANGLED)
When a strange boy tumbles down a river embankment and lands at her feet, seventeen-year-old adrenaline junkie Deznee Cross snatches the opportunity to piss off her father by bringing the mysterious hottie with ice blue eyes home.
Except there’s something off with Kale. He wears her shoes in the shower, is overly fascinated with things like DVDs and vases, and acts like she’ll turn to dust if he touches her. It’s not until Dez’s father shows up, wielding a gun and knowing more about Kale than he should, that Dez realizes there’s more to this boy—and her father’s “law firm”—than she realized.
Kale has been a prisoner of Denazen Corporation—an organization devoted to collecting “special” kids known as Sixes and using them as weapons—his entire life. And, oh yeah, his touch? It kills. The two team up with a group of rogue Sixes hellbent on taking down Denazen before they’re caught and her father discovers the biggest secret of all. A secret Dez has spent her life keeping safe.
A secret Kale will kill to protect.

Steaming up the YA shelves since 2011 (5 stars)
Pissing off her dad at every opportunity is what Deznee Cross lives for. When a mysterious boy stumbles across her when she's making her way home one night she figures dragging him home with her is the perfect way to anger him yet again. But Kale is more than a little strange, finding mundane things around her home fascinating and seeming fearful of making any physical contact with her. When her father come homes waving a gun and apparently well known to Kale the reality of the situation paints a pretty scary picture of just who her dad really is.
The "law firm" her father works for is really an organization imprisoning people with special abilities known as Sixes to be trained and used as weapons. Denazen Corporation has held Kale all of his life because his touch kills. As Dez falls into the world of Sixes, discovering Kale's not the only one, the pair find themselves in the center of a very dangerous conflict between hidden Sixes and Denazen. But Kale may not be able to protect Dez because she's got a secret of her own, one that makes her all the more valuable to both sides.
Sometimes a book comes along that you just know you're going to love from page one. TOUCH gets a lot of what makes it fun from Deznee's narration. She's definitely got a voice of her own that stands out from the crowd. I can only think of a couple of other YA characters with voices this unforgetable. Her snark and refusal to stay down keep the action moving and pepper the entire thing with humor at just the right moments. Through her eyes the other characters get much more life too. Kale is an interesting figure but I couldn't quite figure him out. It'll be interesting to see his growth in further installments. The only issue I found was Dez's big secret. It actually came up at such an odd time and in that, I felt like it was a little contrived. It felt a little bit too 'oh by the way...' when there had been no reason for it to be hidden from the reader so long. It made sense that it came out to the secondary characters when it did but it just felt like it should have at least come up in one of her personal dialogs early on.
From start to finish TOUCH was entertaining and exciting. It's definitely fair to compare this a bit to Marvel Comic's series featuring mutants and the Runaways series in particular. If you enjoy adventure with humor, a dash of steamy romance, and lots of action I would highly recommend TOUCH. I'd class it as more of a supernatural series than paranormal but fans of either are likely to love it.
