Review: Embraced by Blood by Laurie London

Embraced by Blood (Sweetbloods #2) by Laurie London
Paranormal Romance, Vampires
Mass Market Paperback $7.99 (384 pages, HQN)
Ebook $6.99
Audiobook $24.95

Alfonso Serrano is a hunted man. For months he's managed to elude the Darkbloods, vengeful foes who won't rest until he's dead. But he still craves one dangerous temptation: Lily DeGraff, the sexy Guardian agent he'll risk anything to protect.
Lily is a wanted woman. Her talent for tracking Sweet—a rare blood type that's addictive to vampires—makes her a prime target for enemy capture. Her only hope is the stealthy vampire operative who stole into her bed…then left her in despair. Danger aside, Lily won't let Alfonso near her heart again—until an irresistible hunger threatens to draw them back together… and into an assassin's snare.

Perhaps I had impossibly high expectations? (4 stars)

When we met Alfonso Serrano in BONDED BY BLOOD he was the hero's evil brother with a secret—he wasn't so evil. His liaisons with Lily revealed his status as a double-agent of sorts and when that house of cards came tumbling down he had no where to go. But the Darkbloods have a weapon to use against him. One that won't stop.

Lily DeGraff is the single mom and tracker who once had a thing with Alfonso. Her tracking talent makes her life more dangerous than most. Being able to track down Sweetbloods with ease puts her in danger of Darkblood capture. When her gift mysteriously weakens she has to turn to Alfonso for aid, something she really doesn't want to do. Risking her heart on the man who broke it before is something this single mother can't in good conscience do.

Laurie London is quickly becoming an author I love to read. She's great at setting the pace of her plot, making the Seattle area come alive with authenticity, and fogging up the windows with steamy love scenes worth racing toward. This second Sweetbloods novel was highly anticipated and I think that might be what 'caused me to get frustrated with it. Lily and Alfonso were characters I really got interested in in the previous novel. I could hardly wait to see them brought together again! So when I started reading EMBRACED BY BLOOD the big issue I had was that something with the characters' personalities felt off. I still can't put my finger on it but there was a certain neediness and something I can't name that made them less enjoyable together. That said it was my lone issue with the story save for the occasional hint of cheesy romantic moments.

If you loved BONDED BY BLOOD's action-packed plot this one is right in line with it. never a dull moment and plenty of surprises are in store for readers. I really love London's ability to make the setting an integral part of her novels. The little side bits about the video game being used as a recruitment tool for the Darkbloods were a nice geeky touch that made this gamer grin. Once again the secondary characters filled in much needed breaks from the action and steamy love scenes making me anxious for Jackson's story more than I already was!

Haven't started the Sweetbloods series yet? Definitely start with BBB, a lot of the foundation for this book is laid there so I don't feel this stands alone really well.

Thanks cleemckenzie! I do try to be open about what works or doesn't work for me. I like reading a review where the same is done because everyone's tastes differ. :)

And thanks for following!

Thanks for the great review! I read the first one and loved it, but I haven't had the chance to read this one, but I will have to make sure my expectations aren't too high!!

You're very welcome Lover of Romance. I was expecting Lily to be just a little more... flirty? I think that's it. Instead she was kinda scattered and that sexy persona I'd anticipated was colored by her sudden troubles with her tracking and Alfonso.

There was a plot twist I really didn't expect that I loved too. It'd be a super spoiler so I didn't mention it in the review at all but I promise it's a good one.
