Entangled and Me

As we’re celebrating the launch of Entangled Publishing this coming month, I thought I’d share a little of how I got together with Entangled.

I first heard of them when I saw a pitch event over at the Savvy Authors website – pitch your book to Heather Howland, managing editor of Entangled. I visited the site and was impressed by their vision of combining the best parts of both traditional and indie publishing. Also, I’m not one of those writers for whom marketing comes easily. I’m the sort that likes to loiter in my writing cave and write stories. So the following words also struck a chord:

An in-house marketing machine, complete with a dedicated promo budget and publicist assigned to every book.

So I pitched my paranormal romance, Bittersweet Blood, and was a runner up. Here’s my ‘three line’ pitch:

All Tara Collins longs for is a normal life. So falling in love with sexy private investigator, Christian Roth, is not an option, because Christian is in no way normal, in fact, he’s not even human. Then again, as she is soon to discover—neither is Tara.

Heather asked to see the first three chapters. Four days later, she asked for the rest and less than a week after that, I signed the contract. This was so refreshing after the long waits we often have to endure with publishers.

I had another novella ready to go out into the world. Break Out was, and still is, my favorite, but I also knew it might be hard to sell because it’s such a hybrid – a mix of space opera, paranormal and romance. But I was impressed with Entangled so far and thought I’d give it a try.

I sent it off to Heather. Heather passed it on to my fabulous editor Liz, who was looking for space operas at the time (she’s a woman of immense taste!). Liz got back to me in less than 24 hours, and I had the contract soon after.

I don’t think I’ve ever started either a book or a novella with the intention of writing a series. But by the time I reach the end of a story, I’ve always got to the point where I’m thinking about what happens next. I’m sure all authors get this way – we don’t want to let go of our characters or our worlds – but I suspect it’s especially true of paranormal and science fiction where the world building is such a major part of the process.

Break Out was no different. By the time I’d got to the end, I was already planning happily-ever-afters for the rest of the crew of El Cazador. So I was very pleased to contract with Entangled for the first three books in the Blood Hunter series.

Book 2 and 3 are full length novels and explore the world of the future in more detail. A world where immortality is available, but only to the elite, giving rise to a whole load of opposing forces; the immortal Collective, the Church, who offer another form of immortality, the genetically modified rebels, and of course, the crew of El Cazador.

Entangled have been wonderful to work with, both very professional and approachable. And they have some fantastic books coming out over the next few months—I’m sure they’re going to be a great success!

Nina Croft grew up in the north of England. After training as an accountant she spent four years working as a volunteer in Zambia which left her with a love of the sun and a dislike of 9-5 work. She then spent a number of years mixing travel (whenever possible) with work (whenever necessary) but has now settled down to a life of writing and picking almonds on a remote farm in the mountains of southern Spain.

Nina’s writing mixes romance with elements of the paranormal and science fiction.
