Needful Transitional Tale (4 stars)

After the dramatic events of Iron Kissed Mercy Thompson is left trying to pick through the mine field that is her life. Fortunately she has Adam and her other friends to help her work through what she's been going through. Now Marsilia is coming after her. The Vampire Queen isn't too happy that Mercy killed a member of the local seethe and she's willing to hurt anyone connected to Mercy to punish her.

When an old friend turns up needing help with a mysterious ghost problem at her home in Spokane it seems like a good idea for Mercy to head there to get out of Marsilia's way. But there's a reason the only local vampire in Spokane is called The Monster and crossing paths with him could prove to be most unpleasant...

Bone Crossed is one of those stories that's a little on the out-of-nowhere side. It has a plot within a plot of sorts. The overall plot focusing on Marsilia and her hunt for Mercy being the main plot and the trip to Spokane being the central plot. As all of this is playing out Mercy is still recovering emotionally (and a little bit physically) from what happened in Iron Kissed. So this is a pretty complex set-up which has to accomplish a lot of things but for fans I think getting her from the victimization of Iron Kissed to a point she can settle into some form of normalcy is key. If that's what you're looking for I'm pleased to say you will get it.

There isn't much I can say regarding the characters, they're great as usual. We do learn a little bit more about the vampires, Stefan specifically. I wasn't really thrilled with the climax of the plot revolving around Marsilia, I was kind of expecting something a little more... dramatic? It was a little anti-climactic might be the best way I can put it. The first thing I thought was "that's it?". I did really enjoy the ghost and vampire stuff that happened in Spokane though.

Overall this was the weakest entry in the series in my opinion but not one to be missed by any means. I enjoyed it and think all fans should keep reading!
